to be very jealous of friend!!

My friend popped round today for tea and chat. I know she has brought a new house of 1.4Million, so i knew she had money, but never really thought about it.
Today Im sitting there telling her im considering auctioning my DD1s watercolours off to pay for her specialist bike (she has Autism), she is a wonderful artist and very talented but her bike is £250. Friends DD was playing with her sunglasses, which she takes off her and tells her she cant play with them as she treated herself and they were £200!!
Money has never been something Im very bothered about and quite happy with my little two bed terrance house, doing my shopping at aldi and buying clothes in second hand shop Blush and just very Envy that what im trying to get together for DD1s bike is what she spends on sunglasses :(

There will always be someone richer/cleverer/prettier than you.

So do you spend your time feeling jealous of them? Or do you think what you have?

It's like children - there is so little point in comparing them.

Just think of your own way and what you want. If you are driven towards

I think it was quite inconsiderate of your friend to let slip how much the sunglasses cost.

I used to have an acquaintance (through antenatal classes, but we drifted apart) who was obviously very well off, but pretended she had no idea how much anything cost. Was very sweet of her.

Today I am Envy of people with great legs.

And I'm curious about your DD's art. Would love to see some of it!

I have £250 sunglasses and your post has humbled me. Your friend is very insensitive. She should not have mentioned the price in front of you. It was cruel and unnecessery given the conversation that you were having with her. Please don't sell the paints. It sounds like they mean a lot to your dd. Could you do some sort of sponsored activity instead to raise the money for the bike? I am sure that your friend's and family would be happy to donate. Or do you have grown out of kid's clothes or maternity clothes or buggy/cot etc or something like that you could ebay instead?

I know Im being unreasonable, maybe jealous wasnt the right word, maybe im just peed that she mentioned cost of glasses. She is a lovely friend, and very sweet, have invited us to go for a swim in her new pool Grin

The paintings are beautiful. Not the paints! Could you maybe try and do a stall at your school fair to sell her paintings to raise money for the bike? I am sure that people will help.

I agree with what others have said. I don't understand how she thought it was appropriate to come out with that statement considering the conversation you were having.

Money can buy a lot of things, but obviously not class, manners or etiquette by any measure.

OP, as others have said, there will always be someone better off than you, thinner, prettier, wears smarter clothes etc. On the flip side, there are always those that will be a lot worse off than you. I'm struggling to pay some bills at the moment too and I have to make a conscious effort to not listen to others in my social group discussing new buys, holidays etc. It's not nice, but it only gets to you if you focus upon it. I agree that your friend was insensitive and thoughtless but don't let it eat you up.

Your family pictures look lovely. Gorgeous children and an equally gorgeous looking husband. Now, those are things that money can't buy.

Maybe you could get the paintings made into cards or prints and sell them in all the local shops/online and raise the money that way. Then you can keep the original paintings. You might have to start out with a small batch (because of cost) and when they sell buy more to sell.
