How miserable are you that the Tories are in power?

I feel tense and twitchy. I used to enjoy reading the politic section/ other political forums, but I fear if I keep on going there and reading more and more about Tory plans, I will give myself a heart attack.

I loath them but worst I fear them. I am anxious for this country and the ordinary man and woman.

Dave makes me feel insane with hatred.

I have a colleague who is in love with the Tories. I don't share biscuits with him any more.

Dave makes me itch. All over.

You mean, back to how it was when I were a lass under the Tories? When a degree meant something and you had first rate uni and first rate Poly's rather than second rate unis.

jenny60 · 09/07/2011 21:48

Thanks for the, err, insightful assessment falcon .

Xenia · 09/07/2011 21:59

Absolutely delighted they are in power although they are being so feeble and not radical enough I can see they need much more of a push.

Because it was thought that an equal society could be created by giving everyone a degree. However worthless the content of the course.

Jenny60 - yes, I completely understand the concerns you raised. I'm not happy about everything the Tories are doing.

moondog · 09/07/2011 22:32

Jenny, what's your subject?

arazmataz · 09/07/2011 22:35

Yeah, LeQueen, weep with me. Sad

Xenia · 09/07/2011 22:59

There may be merit in having people doing pointless courses at university rather than being on the dole. However we can't now afford that so things are changing.

Not when they spout utter rubbish and believe themselves to be experts, Xenia. Spreading misinformation ain't great for society as a whole.

Ishani · 09/07/2011 23:08

I think it is better that teenagers are in university even studying basket weaving than on the dole, but at their own (or parents) expense.
Lets face it if any of us were told your child is pretty average, will earn a middle income and will never light up the sky's but would you like them to get an "ology" and let you have the cap and gown photo for the front room the answer would be yes please.

arazmataz · 09/07/2011 23:11

It would be great if all teenagers were to learn how to think for themselves, and to think analytically. Teaching them to recite govt propaganda parrot fashion and to reject any alternative view is very bad for them.

arazmataz · 09/07/2011 23:13

Although obviously it's quite good for the government in question.

Ishani · 09/07/2011 23:15

arazmataz - is that what is happening at uniiversity today ? In our day we raged against the machine. I have to say I thought it was starting to go pear shaped when students were better dressed and had more electronic toys than your average 30 year old office worker.

hellyeah · 09/07/2011 23:16

but wtf will happen to the teens who can't do basket weaving, the ones that are disabled?
when they end up in care homes because their parents can't look after them any more as they can't afford it. when the teen can't even go to the shops anymore as the mobility part af their DLA has been taken away, so all they have to look forward to is a weekly arrange outing to asda or the local garden center.
these are the people who are going to suffer under this government,
the voiceless, the vulnerable, the very people we should look after.
they are the ones who will suffer

arazmataz · 09/07/2011 23:19

Ishani, that's my experience: young people with degrees who swear blind that what they learnt is the absolute truth, and will tolerate no grey areas. Especially if what they learnt doesn't actually make sense.

Xenia · 09/07/2011 23:21

Most people don't have disabilities and both Labour and the Tories are committed to the welfare state. What we need is more wealth generation so those of us prepared to work hard can generate the profits which keep those who rely on us for support.

The 3 of my chidlren who have graduated have not been taught Government propaganda at all. Our universities are packed with independent thinking students of all views from extreme Islam to fundamentalist Christianity,. young Tory to communist and it will thankfully ever be thus.

Ishani · 09/07/2011 23:22

That is sad arazmataz, I am looking forward to some decent arguments with the Dc's about what they've learnt and new points of view, if it's all bollocks and they don't want to change the world i shall be gutted.

MilkMonitor · 09/07/2011 23:22

"..both Labour and the Tories are committed to the welfare state"

You really think so? Really?

arazmataz · 09/07/2011 23:22

Think they went to good unis, though, eh, Xenia?

Ishani · 09/07/2011 23:25

You'd hope hellyeah that the parents will take care of them even if it's to their own determent, i didn't order non disabled children when i took the plunge into parenthood, if anything happened in the future the child would still be mine and my responsibility. I had savings and budgeted for school and uni but equally that money might have been needed for a wheelchair and physio.
Perhaps these are things people need to give more thought to before deciding have any child, what's my plan B if the shit hits the fan.

arazmataz · 09/07/2011 23:27

If you teach them to rage against the machine, you will be doing a great job, Ishani. Smile

YA definitely NBU OP.
Confused about how this thread has been hijacked. Or maybe I just haven't had enough Wine for it to make sense?
