Tea is something you drink surely? Dinner is what we call the (hot) evening meal in our house and it is served between 7-8pm, after that it is a lighter meal called Supper. Your daughter is entierly justified to correct you, both on your grammar and upbrining

DH is currently getting very confused with this whole north/south mealtimes, and has started calling evening meal "lunch"

Dinner is midday meal, lunch doesn't exist, Tea is at teatime- so evening meal.
you can also have Supper if you're still hungry, at about 7. but you can't have supper if it's your main evening meal. then it's dinner. but only if you have guests.

basically, your DD is very wrong, and should probably spend a week on the Naughty Step to think about what she is doing!

i wouldn't mind so much if she was older, but i thought it was a bit much considering shes only just turned 4.

As a northener I eat breakfast, dinner and tea. My DS, a southerner, eats breakfast, lunch and dinner. Never the twain shall meet and we've simply agreed to differ.

Dinner, surely, is you main evening meal if it is a formal meal. If it's an informal evening meal, then I believe it's supper. As in Lord and Lady X would like to invite you to supper. Meaning lasagne and chips in the kitchen. As opposed to Lord and Lady X would like to invite you to dinner, meaning evening dress, candles and numerous courses? But sadly I don't have the need to worry about such things as I rarely receive invitations to either dinner or supper.

My dd's go to bed at 7 so that means they'd never have "dinner"
Its breakfast (at 7am-ish), dinner (at 12pm-ish), tea (at 5pm) in this house with maybe a bit toast/cereal for supper if still hungry but not very often.

argh!! bloody diner!! you've brought memories crashing back around my ears here my MIL is always saying ''when you and super hubby move back down here we'll have you round for dinner'' and when i did live down south (which is actually north, england confuses me!!) she was always banging on about dinner bloody dinner doesnt make any farking sense ..

To me dinner is like a dinner party or going out for dinner. When I was growing up though dinner was the midday meal. Breakfast dinner and tea.

Mostly I'd say tea for evening meal, but by the time DH and I tend to eat it is nearly bedtime so definitely more like supper. My MIL says supper.

Actually I call it dindinbongs, but maybe that's just me.

DH and family have breakfast, brew, dinner, brew, tea and supper.
Any meal with gravy is also called dinner for example sausage, mash and gravy is sausage dinner.
My Parents have breakfast, elevenses, lunch, tea, dinner and supper or sometimes no dinner and supper but kitchen supper in the middle of the two.
As a result of this we have a mixture of the two, breakfast, brew, dinner, tea, tea or dinner and supper, it is most confusing.

See I think tea is a drink, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Supper is a bowl of cereal before bed But I think that's because dinner to me = hot food and I've never done a hot lunch, well not never but you know what I mean. Caused dd1 huge confusion when she went to nursery school and had hot lunches, cue "but my Mummy only gives me cold food for lunch" .

Small children have nursery tea about 5pm to 6pm. Adults and older children have supper later, about 7pm to 8pm. Midday meal is always lunch. Tea (other than for small children) involves cake, small sandwiches and bone china. Dinner only exists when there are formal guests (dining room rather than kitchen table)
