nickelbabe the upper middles classes would not refer to the family evening meal as dinner. that would be supper. lower middle and middle would call it dinner

Funtimewincies · 06/07/2011 19:08

I find the idea of being invited round for supper (a la Nigella) really weird. If you can't be arsed to cook me dinner, don't bother. I'm not to be fobbed of with supper Grin!

In my area of the North West traditionally the working man (person) has
first breakfast then,

10.30 lunch

12.30 dinner

5- 6ish tea

before bed supper

smileyfacestar · 06/07/2011 19:20

That is so weird! My 4 year old DD corrected me in the exact same way earlier! I was a bit gobsmacked.

So why do men wear dinner jackets if dinner is not for the posh?

Re: packed lunch, yes people might say 'so and so takes sandwiches' but what would the school put on a note about a trip or something? 'Your child will need sensible shoes, a waterproof and butties'?

SecretNutellaFix · 06/07/2011 20:55

I've always worked on the following

Breakfast- served up until about 10.
Brunch- between 10 and 12
Lunch- between 12 and 2.30-ish

Afternoon tea- light meal between 3 and 4:30
High Tea (commonly referred to as just tea) between 4.30 and 6.30
Dinner- served between 7 and 9 usually
supper- light snack between 8 and bedtime

If you had afternoon tea ( growing up usually a cup of tea and a slice of bread and butter or cake) then you probably had dinner. If you had Tea, then you would usually raid the larder have supper.

I hope it clears everything upGrinWink

Lies - dinner is a formal supper. The upper classes would call the family evening meal supper not dinner.
