to want to smack people buying school uniform?

The bloody children haven't even bloody broken up yet and the shops are full of "Back to School" stuff. Was in M&S today trying to buy shorts for Ds for HOLIDAYS and there was a woman with armfuls of new school unifrom, everything down to knickers and socks and I just wanted to yell at her for being insufferably smug and oganised!
anything I buy for DS now isn't going to fit him in 8 weeks anyway - do nobody else's children actually grow over the summer???

DC don't grow over summer. Actually, I want to say that they never grow at all, but the weird thing is that they start primary school much smaller than average, and finish it taller than average, so somewhere along the way most everybody else plateaus, I guess.
Looking for uniform in September is a recipe for disaster, though, I agree on that.

lobatteries · 26/06/2011 10:25

YANBU and I hate being one who does now after finding myself unable to acquire any items until after xmas and so being left very short.

Guitargirl · 26/06/2011 10:35

YABU.

OP - you said 'I just want to have a break from all the school stuff'.

That's exactly why people are buying the uniforms now when term is still on, so that when the summer holidays are happening they can enjoy the break without having to think about school uniforms.

Have just bought DD's logoed stuff. She's very excited about starting Reception, keeps pulling her book bag out to look at it.

StealthPolarBear · 26/06/2011 10:42

aargh the M&S site is infuriating - I ahve just clicked on boys polo shirts and been taken to girls polo shirts. I am new to this - will it matter?

Just about to go find stuff now. There will be nothing left if I leave it until august. I learnt after last year!

StealthPolarBear · 26/06/2011 11:29

can anyone help me with the polo shirts thing?

ThisIsJustASagaNow · 26/06/2011 11:34

I'd like to say YANBU but bitter past experience and 3 dc to buy for I'm afraid I think you are.

Reasons are:

It does run out in the shops.
I have to spread the cost.
It means I can enjoy the summer hols without it hanging over us and anyway we don't get back from being away until a couple of days before they go back so don't have time later.
It makes me feel smug and organised and I get precious little opportunity for that Grin

Haven't bought anything yet it's true, but I'll be starting next month.

If I was really smug and organised I'd employ the same theories to Christmas but that'll never happen.

Journey · 26/06/2011 11:46

I've bought my DCs school uniforms already. They don't grow that much in 7 weeks. I think people exaggerate just how much their kids supposedly grow over the summer holiday. Funny they don't grow at this same amazing rate the rest of the year!

CogitoErgoSometimes · 26/06/2011 11:49

Thanks OP. You've just prompted me (normally a last-minute kinda gal) to place my order with M&S! DS's equipment list for his transition to secondary school reads like Hogwarts. Wondering whether to replace 'school bag' with 'wheelbarrow' quite frankly.

Oakmaiden · 26/06/2011 11:50

I'm getting my children's uniform on Wednesday - cos that is when the second hand uniform shop is open. I am hoping they wont grow too much over the holidays.

GetOrf · 26/06/2011 11:50

Ha! I have left all this shit behind. Nowadays I give dd some money and she goes and gets her own uniform.

Is usually cheaper this time of year so makes sense to get it early.

flippineck · 26/06/2011 11:56

Yes, it's early, and I've horrified myself by being so organised...but DD1 starts school in September so needed everything and she's an awkward size (tall and skinny, adjustable waists don't go small enough!). Oh, and the biggie - DC3 is due the first week of September, really do not want to be panicking about uniform in late August. How early can I buy her shoes?!

mankyscotslass · 26/06/2011 11:58

YABU.

I bought all 3 of my Dc's uniform last week, everywhere has offers on it and I got all the sizes and styles I wanted.

If I leave it later I miss out and panic when I can't get what I need.

The only thing I don't buy til the middle of August is school shoes. Even then I never leave it later than the end of the 2nd full week in August, because I have trouble getting shoes to fit 2 of my 3 children.

diddl · 26/06/2011 13:26

How glad I am that mine don´t have a uniform!

valiumredhead · 26/06/2011 13:29

It all runs out here really quickly - I always buy early or we'd not get anything!

snowmummy · 26/06/2011 13:42

YABU.

You feel free to scrabble around at the end of July if you want; that's your choice. Mine is to get all my DCs' stuff now whilst they have everything in stock. Plus, I need my money next month for our holiday and day trips.

Cookster · 26/06/2011 14:07

YABU for wanting to smack anybody. Are you generally very aggressive. There are lots of things that are worse than taking advantage of discounts when there is lots of stock and not having to do a stressful chore when the shops are busy and the stock is running low. How do you feel when people are actually doing something silly?

hiddenhome · 26/06/2011 14:27

I've bought ds2's school uniform already. I just get the next size up.

I hate having to buy uniform over the school holidays as I have enough to do caring for the dcs without trying to fight my way through department stores with thousands of other overheated, stressed parents and millions of overheated, whinging kids Shock

superjobeespecs · 26/06/2011 14:34

im popping into asdas thru the week and getting DDs bought, she comes off friday and i want to be sorted. ive already got her school coat and gym kit (school branded - a must have Hmm) leaving clarks till 2 days before term because last year (my first year - so unexperienced was i) they were so busy they were giving out tickets and had a 30 minute wait!!!!!

lazylula · 26/06/2011 14:35

I have got ds1's uniform, I just got the next size up to what he is wearing now as the uniform he has at the mo still fits him and may well do in the beginning next term, but he will need the next size eventually. As ds1's uniform is brown, if I do not get it now in M and S with the 20% off it will cost a fortune later in the year, so makes good money sense!

maypole1 · 26/06/2011 14:44

The only thing I haven't brought yet is the blazer the only thing that has pissed me off a tad I brought a school tie from the shop and they are now changing it to a clip on tie which you can only buy from the school gurrrr
