to want to smack people buying school uniform?

The bloody children haven't even bloody broken up yet and the shops are full of "Back to School" stuff. Was in M&S today trying to buy shorts for Ds for HOLIDAYS and there was a woman with armfuls of new school unifrom, everything down to knickers and socks and I just wanted to yell at her for being insufferably smug and oganised!
anything I buy for DS now isn't going to fit him in 8 weeks anyway - do nobody else's children actually grow over the summer???

Why do you say you want to smack those who have got it all then??

YABU

I have bought all mine for DS1 and DS2 barring shoes.

DS1 goes into KS4 and needs a new colour top, DS2 starts secondary - a whole new uniform. Both will need new shoes but will get those nearer the time. DS2 wears trainers to school and then they have indoor plimsolls so no need for shoes up until now and DS2 has outworn his but they will last another 4 weeks.

I got their trousers in M&S with 20% off. DS1 needs the shorter length so I buy now to make sure I get it.

IloveTiffany because this is AIBU and people are always up for a fight!Grin
shineon £400 for two uniformsShock. What the bloody hell are they made from?
maybe this is where I am going wrong - I don't have to buy private school uniforms, or through school outfitters or terribly fancy stuff, so there is still plenty available in the local shops here in August. shoes can be a bit of a bugger but in the last 17 years of kitting out DCs have never yet had to send anyone to school unshod.

I agree about not doing it in the holidays. Holidays are meant to be a break from school. I would rather do it now whilst still in 'school' mode than have to think about it when we are supposed to be having time off.

2rebecca · 25/06/2011 22:40

Doesn't bother me. Buying it now probably more sensible than my usual last minute rush when the shops are packed with other disorganised parents and they've ran out of half the stuff.

NorksAreMessy · 25/06/2011 22:44

I have sort of given up on uniform, I don't quite know how.
DD in sixth form-no uniform
DS is 14, he wears a uniform, but I don't seem to have any stress about it anymore. lazer from second hand shop...rough as a badger's..I don't care, he kills them anyway, trousers from Tesco, second hand shirts.
No stress, no mess

ZXEightyMum · 25/06/2011 22:48

It pisses me off that you have to buy a uniform which is meant to still fit / last for a year so far in advance. My DD needs black "trainer's" apparently Grin and I have no idea what size she will be, with room for growth my the beginning of September. Shoes and plimsolls I buy two or three sizes of. At least one is too small.

I might apply to Dragon's Den with my bollox very accurate school uniform crystal ball idea.

lookbutdonttouch · 25/06/2011 22:52

Oh rats, stressed now, haven't even organised what to do with DD for the hols never mind thought about what she will need when going back.

S'pose will need to organise childcare or something, joy.

I too used to detest the 'back to school' signs when we hadn't even broken up!

NettoSuperstar · 25/06/2011 22:52

I had to buy DD's jumpers and Polos last month as it's the cheapest way to do it. The school do a bulk order in May which means you get a discount.
I'll get the trousers and shoes in a few weeks,

Lorenz · 25/06/2011 22:55

I almost bought the kids school trousers earlier today as I was ordering a load of shit from Next but I stopped myself - the way DS1 has been growing lately it's impossible to tell what size he'll be in by September!

Saying that, I did buy DS2's polo shirts last week for september - for £3 from asda, even if they don't fit by then (unlikely as I got the next size up) I'm not exactly losing a fortune!

Belljar71 · 25/06/2011 22:56

Amazing-in our Sainsburys the kids TU range have all colour polo shirts, including yellow.

littleducks · 25/06/2011 23:09

As you lot have been so clever finding Amazingbouncingferret's yellow uniform, does anyone know where to find a calf length black skirt for a yr 1 (possibly can size up if adjustable waist/skinny fit)

piprabbit · 25/06/2011 23:15

John Lewis do some really good quality yellow polo shirts. They wear really well (some of the cheap yellow shirts fade badly in the wash).

JL also do some school skirts which come in various lengths like this one. It might be worth exploring their website.

piprabbit · 25/06/2011 23:16

Sorry - that last link was for littleducks

purplepidjin · 25/06/2011 23:18

PM me and I'll make it??

TheFrogs · 25/06/2011 23:31

I must be the only one...The only time i've ever bought full uniform ready for September was in 2008 when they both started new schools. I normally just buy it as they need it. I admit though to being very pleased with myself last October when I got shirts from Asda online for less than a pound each Grin

catchafallingstar · 25/06/2011 23:33

FYI, some schools in Scotland are already on summer holiday.
So next stage is getting things ready for early August. Not a crime, when others have said, things run out in July.

maighdlin · 25/06/2011 23:54

it just to depress the life out of me seeing back to school signs everywhere at the start of the summer holidays and for some reason it had lingered into adulthood. summer holidays are one of the joys of childhood don't try to take it away!

oldraver · 26/06/2011 01:01

I dont blame people buying early. I had a job finding age 3 (which was still very big) last year as I didnt start looking till the beginning of the holidays.

I just buy stuff as I go along or see it in the shops. Luckily DS's school dont insist on the logo-ed only available form school stuff.

southofthethames · 26/06/2011 01:10

Wow, OP - you want to smack people for just being organised (or getting the chores out of the way as soon as possible)? I'd better not be near you when you're really cross about something terrible! I think it's because some schools have started sending out induction packs to parents, who then decide they'd better follow the instructions, in case the right colour shirts/socks/ whatever get sold out. I expect they are buying one size bigger. The most dramatic sight is our local shoe shops the fortnight before school starts turning into a seething crowd of school kids and mums, because you can't really buy shoes as far advanced as 3 months.

fatlazymummy · 26/06/2011 09:00

YABU. I buy my kids uniforms the whole year round, as and when they need it. Bought my daughter 2 polo shirts the other day as she needed them. I bought my son some new trousers a few weeks ago as he ripped his old ones. If they still fit in September I won't buy any new ones.

Jaspants · 26/06/2011 09:10

Smacking possibly a bit of an OTT reaction Grin but I agree it might be a bit early.

DD is 7 but wearing 10yo clothing and DS is 13 but needs adult clothing. Add a summer growth spurt into the mix and there is no way I would know what size to buy now.

dementedma · 26/06/2011 09:11

southofthethames figuratively, not literally.
