to expect an £8 chicken to at least be free-range?

Just inspected my Sainos Taste the Difference chicken and noticed that it is Freedom Foods approved and not free-range.
I'm not too bothered about animal welfare tbh, but I thought for £8 you could at least expect something free-range!
i got it online so couldn't see the logo.

Eight Pounds! For a CHICKEN? When did that price go up? The last time I bought one it was £5.50, free range. Good lord. For £8 it should be free range, organic and have it's own one bedroom flat on Primrose Hill!

Just a lesson that you need to read the labels like a bloody hawk.

My chickens are free-range, hand-fed grapes, cuddled and blowdried in the rain.

But I buy other chickens to eat.....daft really....but always free-range.

You can wax lyrical about organic chickens or not as much as you like. I can only drool, and imagine what life was like before my teeth turned to butter.

My point about animal welfare is that I am happy with Fredom Foods endorsed food, though some think it is still not a high enough animal welfare standrd.

I would have just expected it to be cheaper!

Organic chickens in Morrisons are £8 and imh better. But I NEED MY SHOPPING DELIVERED god dammit!

I've noticed chickens sneaking up in price... The bog standard ones are now £5/£6 and the organic/free range ones are edging towards £10+

I've switched to just using turkey - much cheaper.

I get the smallest organic F/R chickens I can find from sainsburys, never had to pay more than £8 for them.

I am not shocked by £8 for a chicken - sad but true - but that's not saying I like paying for it. The cheapest one to feed the 4 of us a Sunday Roast was £6 something in the supermarket last week and it wasn't a high falutin' one either. An all bells and whistles one from the butcher is about £12

Blimey!! The biggest chicken we can buy in our butcher is in the region of £6. And its free range. I knew our butcher was good but I hadn't realised he was this good.

An organic whole chicken is at least £10 wherever I've looked. A decent sized one £12. We only buy organic chicken, but whole chickens are too expensive for us, so we buy organic chicken legs costing about £3 and feeds 2 adults and 2 LOs.

I do the same choceyes - it is hard to feed a big family without a whole chicken, but I buy the free range, corn fed chicken legs for 2 quid a pair, they are much bigger and taste better than the standard chicken legs you get, easily enough with one each.

That way I dont offend my concience or my pocket!

My LOs are only 2.5yrs and 10 months so not a lot of chicken goes their way KilledBill (although I do end up giving most of my portion to DS who does love chicken!). I'm thinking when they are older we will have to buy double what we buy know...I'm dreading the food bill!

Do be careful! Organic does not mean the same as free range and vice versa.

We're having chicken for the first time in ages tomorrow and that's because we've finally managed to get a large one for £6 like they used to sell (morrisons)

For the last couple of months, they've been charging £6 for 'medium' chickens that are what I would call 'small'.

They also look annorexic and would never feed my family of 3 adults and 2 kids.

I once paid £16 for a chicken in Borough Market. It was a weird shape (longer and thinner somehow) but my god, the taste. It was straight back to my childhood when chicken was a luxury (pre-intensive battery rearing) and a chicken tasted, well, really chicken-y.

I really appreciated that bird, and even the family agreed is was, to coin a phrase, an exceedingly good coq.

I just hope it lay on silk cushions, was serenaded with harps and flutes, and was fed nothing but organic titbits by a handsome young farmer.

@SparklyCloud I don't want to turn this into an animal welfare thread but why do peeps like you insist on being so judgy about animal welfare beleifs! I tried to buy a sodding free-range chicken, what else can I do? I'm just not being naive about the how well kept an "organic" one would be.
My point is the price! It is a big bugger though. But still! Going to try and check out butchers except its a half hour walk from house as we have no car.
