That's it really. Some posters seem happy to bandy around the term quite happily on here but I suspect they are all talk with very little trousers IYSWIM. There are others who I am very certain could call a fanny a vagina.
So AIBU in thinking people are vey happy to type the word but out there in the real world face to face with another human being they wouldn't have the front/arrogance/nastiness to do it?

the thing is, to me anyway, cunt is such a short sharp word, very useful when articulate argument is over Grin knobrotter and things like that just dont trip off my tongue!

begonyabampot · 24/06/2011 09:27

Greythornes point is interesting. Was cunt always used as an insult to women or was it just the word to describe that part of their body? If men then started using it at some point as an insult to women - then do women really want to collude in that by using it themselves or has it really just evolved now to mean something else?

I don't like the word and don't use it on here or in RL but do use other swear words but not all the time.

begonyabampot · 24/06/2011 09:28

And I'm Scottish but don't use it so it's not just something that 'scottish' people do.

crazynanna · 24/06/2011 09:28

lissie it's also a word that allows you to also curl back your top lip on delivery thus enhancing the effect of utter repulsion.

spookshowangel · 24/06/2011 09:29

i dont think there is anything wrong with using it as an insulting term per se like i said previously we use insulting terms for the penis all the time cock, dick, pillock, wanker. but to see cunt as the most insulting thing you can call some one is indicative of how society feels about vaginas so call people cunts use it in a light hearted way so the shock value will wear off and it will become part of the main stream. dont not use it because of that basis because you will just make it more taboo.

jesuswhatnext · 24/06/2011 09:29

hmm, the way the word has evolved is an interesting point begony!, perhaps one of our more educated posters can enlighten us?

spookshowangel · 24/06/2011 09:30

no begon apparently used to be a medical term

AuntieMonica · 24/06/2011 09:30

so, if you use the word 'useless' in front of a gender-specific swear, does that improve the context, but ironically?

FannyFifer · 24/06/2011 09:31

It's said as a term of endearment in Scotland.
"He's a gid wee cunt"
"oh your an awful cunt"

jesuswhatnext · 24/06/2011 09:32

spooks, your point is also worth thinking about - i may start a thread about a thread soon

AIBU to be all ditherery over wheather i can say 'cunt' Grin

AuntieMonica · 24/06/2011 09:32

i have NEVER heard it used as a term of endearment, Fanny

but your example brings spookshowangel's point of view nicely into context

begonyabampot · 24/06/2011 09:34

see now i'm confused as spooks has a good point too. If it's used light heartedly it will no longer convey the contempt for women that it previously was meant to by men.

FannyFifer · 24/06/2011 09:35

Can of course be used in an aggressive way as well depending on circumstances.

spookshowangel · 24/06/2011 09:36

its sweet that british people use swear words as terms of endearment, talk about repressed. i did it to my bf the other day when he was being lovely. i called him a soppy wanker. its probably pretty exclusive to out little island we should be proud Grin

Lunabelly · 24/06/2011 09:36

I use cunt, because I found you syphilitic arse-whore of satan too much of a mouthful when ordering psychoknickers off my property.

JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleeene · 24/06/2011 09:36

I agree with Greythorne and I also think its a very lazy way to insult someone. I prefer to get more lyrical with my insults.

Pumpernickel10 · 24/06/2011 09:37

Jesus I think the word as evolved because people say it because it's not so offensive anymore, it's funny more than anything. I say it probably the same way someone would say "oh shit/oh fuck" I've never found it offensive and I don't say it in front of DD. I'm not the Jeremy Kyle type of person either so don't say everyone that says it as little intelligence.

JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleeene · 24/06/2011 09:37

I do like a good fuck off now and then though.

begonyabampot · 24/06/2011 09:37

agree also about the sharpness and almost physical feel of some swear words

cunt
shit
fuck
bitch

they do delivery a certain punch.

LadyWord · 24/06/2011 09:37

Only DP, in a friendly way "stop being such a grumpy old cunt" or "oh you jammy cunt you had the last biscuit."

I love it as a swearword. Sometimes nothing else will do. "Ohhhhhh CUNTFLAPS!"

I'm not rough, I'm v middle claaarsss - and very feminist. I understand it's not nice that our strongest term of abuse is about female genitalia. But, I think that's because of the power of sexual/taboo things. If you think about it we also use "dick" "cock" and "tool" as terms of abuse - but they are weaker and more about being ineffectual or useless. So cunt is better

I'm careful though around friends etc. because I know some people are really shocked and upset by it.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 24/06/2011 09:38

Im in Newcastle and i dont think its a word i hear very often

Twat
Wanker
Divvy
Tit

are probably used the most. If i said Cunt i would use it instead of maybe horrible bastard.

wimpybar · 24/06/2011 09:39

i never use it and hate it and yes do judge people who use it

so shoot me

Greythorne · 24/06/2011 09:39

But the idea that "it conveys every insult really well" and "it sounds sharp and negative" is socially constructed!
It rhymes with "hunt" and yet hunt has none of the sharp, insulting, negative "tones" we have been conditioned to hear.

Personally, if I was trying to insult a man, I would not be against using "prick", as it is gender-relevant at least.

What I really don't get and object to is women using a word for their own anatomy as the worst insult they can imagine.

OracleInaCoracle · 24/06/2011 09:39

wanker.. you can almost roll the W.

Pumpernickel10 · 24/06/2011 09:40

jolene I get lyrical too but rarely lose it, it pisses people off more if you stay calm and smile Grin
