That's it really. Some posters seem happy to bandy around the term quite happily on here but I suspect they are all talk with very little trousers IYSWIM. There are others who I am very certain could call a fanny a vagina.
So AIBU in thinking people are vey happy to type the word but out there in the real world face to face with another human being they wouldn't have the front/arrogance/nastiness to do it?

So I'm a Chav for using it then? Cheers my dear Grin
My Dad was an officer, wing commander in the RAF and he uses it and he's no Chav.

Bunbaker · 24/06/2011 10:06

"Never use it here or anywhere"

Neither do I. I never use the F word either unless it is part of a quote. I do swear, after all I drive a car! But I just don't use those two words, it doesn't come naturally to me.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 24/06/2011 10:06

What is a local Chav Judy. I live in a council house so am probably classed by a lot of people as a Chav. I have been called it enough on here.

I would not use the word Cunt as like i have said before its not really a word many people use where i am and as i said above its a generation thing. When i was younger the word Cunt was highly offensive where i am, much more than Fuck or Bastard.

Pendeen · 24/06/2011 10:08

lissielou

Of course I am entitled to my opinion, as are you.

OracleInaCoracle · 24/06/2011 10:09

Im actually serious about finding the word chav pretty offensive. its a word created by the middle classes to describe the poor, its no better than the N word which was created by white slave owners (iirc) whats the difference?

sweetness86 · 24/06/2011 10:10

Yes I use the word cunt in real life usually because I know a lot of my friends/family hate the word so I say it for effect and to see their looks of disapproval.

I dont find swearing offensive but it can be over used and loses its affect after a while.

The word Chav actually started as a Geordie word which has been used for years-Charver which is not really used in an offensive way here. It evolved and i believe was used as Chav by the middle class offend the LC.

otchayaniye · 24/06/2011 10:13

I have used it rarely in real life, but I think never more than once or twice directly to someone's face. I recall I've always shied away from saying "you are a cunt" but I have said what someone has done is "cunty". Or I've described other people as 'cunts' to others.

It's not a word I use often, although I'm quite fond of expletives. Same with my husband.

It does describe a particular kind of nasty arsehole. Just as 'pillock', 'berk' (a favourite of mine', 'wally' and 'schlemiel' are all informal, emphatic and descriptive words.

The trick is to know how to use these expletives and when.

I've got a language degree from Oxford, and my husband has two language degrees from Oxford. The person I know who peppers her conversation most liberally with 'cunt' is actually an Oxford don.

The swearing=poorly educated is a lower-middle class canard.

midoriway · 24/06/2011 10:13

Cunt, Cunt, Cunty Cunt

What does Germaine Greer have to say on the matter

Germaine says, go for it, revel in the power it has to make people curl and recoil, love the word, use it and make people sit up.

Bunbaker · 24/06/2011 10:14

"its a word created by the middle classes to describe the poor"

Where I live it isn't. It is used to describe a person who has certain tastes - in clothes, drink, choice of holiday destination, TV etc. I am not going to give examples for fear of offending anyone on here.

I agree that it is a derogatory term, but sometimes it is a useful benchmark when you are comparing holiday destinations for example.

ScrambledSmegs · 24/06/2011 10:14

I have used it in RL, never on MN. However, I like the word. It has a very interesting etymology, and is far less offensive than, for example, 'vagina' (Latin), which literally means 'sword sheath'. Yes, that's right, the acceptable name for female genitals is based on it being a place for a man to stick his cock. How lovely.

If someone drives badly eg cuts me up in the car I tend to vent my spleen by calling them a penis. I don't know why, but I can just inject far more venom into that word than any other. Funnily enough, a lot of my male friends now use the word in that context too Confused.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 24/06/2011 10:16

Bun - yes it is here. We dont use chav at all just charver. Its used to describe people but not by class. Its used to be people in berghauses and nike airs. Now its people who are like TOWIES who are called Charvers.

DrNortherner · 24/06/2011 10:17

I think it's hugely niave to think that professional people don't swear. I swear. I aay cunt in RL. I have a job (work in marketing for a national hotel chain - educated enough for you?!) but of course I don't go to work calling all my colleagues/clients/suppliers cunts and twats.

I really can't bear this attitude that some females have where there simply can not bear to hear a certain word. I mean come on, they are just words.

LaCiccolina · 24/06/2011 10:20

No not unless provoked beyond belief. Only ever happened to me once and I was mortified I said it. Its the worst word as far as Im concerned. Ill F*ck all the time (til DD can start to talk at least) but cant do a See You Next Tuesday ever....

I try not to swear in writing at all. Usually I find a better word, Im just lazy when I talk. Not proud of it.

Fifis25StottieCakes What are TOWIES?

BTW am I correct to assume you hail from the northeast with a nickname like yours?

LaCiccolina · 24/06/2011 10:24

Towies are Chavs?! Seriously off base there. Towies have the ability to pay for the Burberry etc they are wearing and its the real deal.

A chav is the "Yeah but no but" stylie. Re-watch the show because you appear to be missing most of it.

DrNortherner · 24/06/2011 10:24

God yes my Mum is one of those....I never swear in her presence. The worst words she says are shit, bloody and bugger. She occasionally uses bastard but she whispers it.

LauLauLemon · 24/06/2011 10:24

I have and I would. I regularly use the word and I don't have a problem with swearing.

I agree with thoss who say it does not reflect upon me being uneducated. I have a degree and I'm currently waiting to start a second degree. Not a PHD or similar but decent enough.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 24/06/2011 10:25

Yes Gateshead Bun. The Only way is Essex. Fake hair tan nails teeth etc

SpecialFriedRice · 24/06/2011 10:27

Yup I use it in RL when the situation calls for it.
