That's it really. Some posters seem happy to bandy around the term quite happily on here but I suspect they are all talk with very little trousers IYSWIM. There are others who I am very certain could call a fanny a vagina.
So AIBU in thinking people are vey happy to type the word but out there in the real world face to face with another human being they wouldn't have the front/arrogance/nastiness to do it?

I'm Scottish, swearing is how we communicate and the word cunt is a term of endearment.

spookshowangel · 24/06/2011 08:37

oh my god not another cunt thread, what is wrong with the word cunt. its just a word. no better or worse than any other word. no one is up in arms when some one calls some one a cock. no because thats seen at best playful silliness at worst a little bit off, but you liken someone to a vagina and its the worse insult in the world, batten down the hatches because people are going to get really offended, even if you say it and its not directed at anyone because its so vile a word. its not the word it self its the connotations i hear people cry, do you really hate your own cunts that much people?

BitOfFun · 24/06/2011 08:38

It's a term of endearment in Scotland. Would any ae ye cunts want a drink? A wee swalley? Etc.

Having said that, I barely ever stand my own round

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 24/06/2011 08:38

I'm not trying to start a competitiive swearing thread honest, nor am I judgemental of those who choose to use the word cunt, nor am I wishing to decide what are and are not acceptable swear words honest Pag. I think I'm more judgemental of people who bandy the word around on here often quite nastily but wouldn't say boo to a goose in RL. I suppose my underlying question (Blimey this is deep for 8.30 on a Friday morning Grin ) is how different a persona do we adopt on here compared to RL. (hope that makes sense)

Pagwatch · 24/06/2011 08:39

Oh hello bof, you lovely old cunt Smile

Did I push it with the 'old'?

SenoritaViva · 24/06/2011 08:41

No, but I wouldn't behind their back nor in a post. It just isn't in the vocabulary that I use as I don't like it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2011 08:41

but..MN isn't real life Wink

Punkatheart · 24/06/2011 08:42

The education and swearing debate is a little weak. I have a lot of intellectual friends who swear. Chaucer used 'bad' language - although it was considered earthy, not obscene:

For, certeyn, olde dotard, by youre leve,
Ye shul have quente right ynogh at eve (The Wife of Bath)

Which translates as:

For indeed, old dotard, by your leave, you shall have plenty of the precious thing (or, more generally, sexual gratification) in the evening.

And yes, quente means cunt.

It is more about how language is applied...

Pagwatch · 24/06/2011 08:43

Blimey yes. A bit deep for the early am Grin

I understand what you mean but tbh I think context is everything.

I don't often swear at people in real life because I am nice and mostly people are nice. My real life does not tend to include people being deeply vile to my face so I don't tend to swear in theirs.

You may as well ask ' would you say to someone in real life that their son looks like a retard and they should take his photo down'

Pagwatch · 24/06/2011 08:44

Sorry that was to hobnobsaremyfave.

MsTeak · 24/06/2011 08:46

Fabulous old word, its been in use for at least a thousand years.

See, dead educated. Smile

And yes, on occasion in RL, why wouldn't I? Most people aren't as prim about it as the pearl-clutchers who whine about it regularly on here.

crazynanna · 24/06/2011 08:47

oh my god not another cunt thread, Grin that made me laugh.

Yes,I do use it at people in some situations, after trying more leniant words, such as prick, twat and arsehole. I summise that if I have to get to the stage where I call you a cunt, then you must really be one.

nannyl · 24/06/2011 08:52

No, never have and cant imagine i ever would.

i have told my (vile ex) step dad to

"Go and Fu*k someone else's mother"

(which i meant quite literally, and was said after listening to him being vile & verbally abusive to my mum (as usual) and telling my mum to "fuck off out of his life, as he had another woman"; he didnt, it was just a "joke" apparently Hmm..... but i meant it as i said it, and havent and wouldnt apologise.... and that arguement was the beginning of the end and my mum has now divorced from him anyway! Grin)

(also it resulted in him physically and violently attacking me..... i got 7 bruises Shock and ended up with the police involved, and he ended up being charged with violently attacking me.... he honestly thought cause i had "said" that he had a right to attack me, Shock... and by giving him a criminal record, and ruining his crb check i have officially ruined his life apparently Hmm!)

I dont normally say swear words ever and personally i dont normally type them either

GoodDaysBadDays · 24/06/2011 08:54

I use it much more in rl, but then I know a lot of cunts Grin

IgnoringTheChildren · 24/06/2011 08:58

I swear much more in RL than I do on here, but then I only tend to really let lose around people I know well (and who won't be horribly offended!) I don't think I've ever called someone a cunt to their face (in anger rather than jest) but I would if the situation called for it. I don't tend to swear at people as I don't often find myself in that kind of a situation, I more of a sweary ranter to let off steam. I also like the use of a various swear words for emphasis. Grin

I'm middle class and educated at post graduate level. I understand why some people think that swearing makes a person look uneducated but it's all about how (and when) you use the language!

OracleInaCoracle · 24/06/2011 09:01

I rarely use the word unless I am really, really riled. and the type of posters/posts that I will use it for are the type that I wouls happily call a cunt in real life.

ENormaSnob · 24/06/2011 09:05

Yes

TechLovingDad · 24/06/2011 09:07

Being able to deliver a good, effective swear word requires timing and skill. I am particularly adept and can deliver the kind of cutting "cunt" that stops an aggressor in their tracks.

Surely if you don't swear you are limiting your vocabulary? Grin

Fleurdebleurgh · 24/06/2011 09:10

Most definitely.
I has impact that other swear words just cant match.
I

MissPenteuth · 24/06/2011 09:10

I tend to be more polite on here than in RL but even in RL my swearing is more of the 'oh for fuck's sake' or 'motherfucking ouch, that hurt!' variety. I rarely swear at people (except twattish drivers, and even that's only loud enough for me to hear). I've never called anyone a cunt, on here or in RL, but I suppose I would if I was angry enough.

paisleyII · 24/06/2011 09:11

yes - but only in a joking term, i think.....

Greythorne · 24/06/2011 09:12

I wouldn't call someone a cunt to their face because I don't consider it to be a "bad" word. I'm a feminist and using a word for female genitalia as an insult does not sit well with me.

Yesterday, there was a thread about Milly Dowler's abductor and murderer having been found guilty. One poster described him as a cunt. There's a huge cognitive dissonance when the worst possible insult one can come up with to describe an evil, manipulative, murdering piecebof lowlife scum is "cunt".

papooshka · 24/06/2011 09:14

Yes I have called someone cunt to their face, but he massively deserved it. Very rarely use it generally though.

OracleInaCoracle · 24/06/2011 09:14

I agree with pag. ime the type of poster who will sneer at swearing are the same ones who will quite happily be as rude as they can and say truly appalling, hurtful things. they will say "at least Im not a barren old witch who doesnt care about their children" then five minutes later sneer "oooo, nice language, I thought we were adults"

leading nicely onto the point that mn is a site for adults. adults swear, children shouldn't don't. if you are offended by swearing, dont use an unmoderated adult forum.

Pumpernickel10 · 24/06/2011 09:14

Yes on a daily basis my DH but it's a term of endearment
