to be upset by their reactions to his name?

DS is nearly 2, and everytime I tell someone his full name, they make a face :( Our families, friends, and now people we meet at playgroups and nursery.

It's a fairly unusual first name, but really common middle name, and for some reason everyone finds it fun to snigger at him. I'm starting to worry that he'll be bullied for it at school. DP says to ignore them, and that they are just jealous that his name stands out from the crowd, but I can't help being upset by it :( I'm thinking even about stopping using his first name altogether.
AIBU to wish people would just accept him?

Surely it cant be that bad? What is his name?

GypsyMoth · 23/06/2011 13:33

yanbu

but he will now have this reaction all his life, unless the name suddenly becomes popular!

reelingintheyears · 23/06/2011 13:33

You'll have to tell us what it is you know.

But if you like it then what does it matter what others think.

ellangirl · 23/06/2011 13:34

Sod them! It's your child, and his name is what it is! I wouldn't post it if I were you- people on here are mean about names too! My friend just called her boy a really unusual name, and to be honest I was unsure about it, but it's just him now, and I can't imagine him as anything else.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 23/06/2011 13:34

of course YANBU - and your DP is right, just ignore em!! Dont stop using his name, its his identity and stuff anyone who doesnt like it.

whackamole · 23/06/2011 13:34

Can't really comment without knowing what the name is tbh but I understand if you don't want to post it.

My boys have very ordinary first names but double-barrelled surnames with an ordinary bit and a foreign bit.

begonyabampot · 23/06/2011 13:34

of course they shouldn't make fun or be rude but you did choose his name to make him stand out - did you not think this could happen?

So what is the name and we can see if YABU or not? Grin

supadupapupascupa · 23/06/2011 13:34

YANBU to think people should mind their own business, but to be honest you should have given it more thought before naming him if it is bothering you so much.
Not sure there is anything you can do about it now except give him a nickname or call him by his middle name.

knittedbreast · 23/06/2011 13:35

ill tell you my sons name if you tell me yours lol

Crosshair · 23/06/2011 13:36

Whats the name?

If you're happy with it, ignore the nasty comments or poo in their shoes.

TescoValueNickname · 23/06/2011 13:36

BelleEnd · 23/06/2011 13:37

Pleeeeease tell us the name! I think it's better, if the Hmm faces are going to bother you so much, to start using the middle name now before he realizes people are making faces! Of course, they are sods for making that face in the first place, but they probably won't stop.

featherbag · 23/06/2011 13:38

This is why I'm not keen on 'unique' names. Obviously don't know what your DS is called, may be something lovely, but I've had to bite my tonuge recently when introduced to several ex-schoolfriends' offspring, there are a few of them at the moment seem to be in competition with each other for the most ridiculous name. Maybe the 'unique' first name jibes with the common middle name? Did anyone pull faces when you first came up with the name? Can you imagine your child as a 35 year old lawyer having his name read out in court without people sniggering? I'm currently pregnant with my first and this is advice my MIL gave me!

Having said all that, it's too late now, maybe give him the option of using his middle name when he gets older if HE wants to?

mintymellons · 23/06/2011 13:38

I think it's a great name. Some people are very boring and only like really traditional, dull names.

TechLovingDad · 23/06/2011 13:38

He's named after a rapper?

featherbag · 23/06/2011 13:39

That does sound a bit odd put together, but I've never met your DS, it may really suit him!

earlyriser · 23/06/2011 13:39

Hee hee, i'm assuming this is a joke?

BelleEnd · 23/06/2011 13:39

x post. I like the name Ludo (though it is a game in my mind! And a meanie from Harry Potter.) It's not like he's called Beauden or owt. :o

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 23/06/2011 13:39

Ha ha ha

elseIlltellyourfather · 23/06/2011 13:39

TrilllianAstra · 23/06/2011 13:40

featherbag · 23/06/2011 13:40

Have just put both names together and said them out loud - Ludicrous?
