Aibu to wonder why people having thier smelly feet chowed on by poor captive fish is public entertainment?

Having a perfectly nice browse around the shops this afternoon when I came across this fish pedicure stand, right in the middle of the shopping centre.
I don't even have a probloem with feet generally but just yuk!
What next public ear cleaning, group colonics??Grin

There are stands for eyebrow threading all over my town at the minute. Not my cup of tea, but it's amusing watching a newbie wince as they have it done:o

kaluki · 21/06/2011 19:15

Ugh. I agree this is vile.
Why on earth would you let a fish nibble the dead skin off your feet when seconds earlier it was nibbling on someone elses disgusting feet?
I feel sorry for the poor fish.

diabolo · 21/06/2011 19:18

Where I go on holiday, (only the Med) the little fishes do this for free! Tickles like you would not believe.

Pay for it? No thank you.

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 19:18

I've actually had this done, and I'll be honest my feet felt fabulous afterwards so smooth and no hard skin. It may be a bit yuk but it works better than any pedicure I've ever had.

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 19:18

Mine was free as my friends got a beauty salon :)

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 19:19

I think she charges £25 so there's money in fishes

SmethwickBelle · 21/06/2011 19:23

I think it sounds rank too, Groupon is always pleading with me to take up increasingly heavily discounted offers on it so I think it might be one of those things that was a novelty that has now passed.

HidinginaHardHat · 21/06/2011 19:25

We've had two shops open here for the sole (ba boom boom, im here all day) purpose of providing these fish pedicures. I don't get it. Ick. YANBU

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 19:25

Well I liked it but I'm pretty rank though

fatlazymummy · 21/06/2011 19:33

I just give myself a pedicure. I don't really want animals attending to my personal grooming. Just like I wouldn't get a dog to lick my privates instead of washing them. Same sort of thing to me.

Mandy2003 · 21/06/2011 19:41

I'm not sure SmethwickBell - I keep getting increased discounts offered on burgers and pizzas! I think the fish pedicure is incredibly cruel to the fish and incredibly unhygienic. If they add more chemicals to improve the hygiene the fish suffer more so its a no-win situation IMO.

DurhamDurham · 21/06/2011 19:48

Me and my 14 year old DD had a 'fish pedicure' and it great fun! It tickled a lot , we were sat side by side and were laughing all the time. We paid £15 each for 25 mins and it was worth every penny. Our feet felt lovely and smooth and we enjoyed our 'girly' time together. DH thought it a grand waste of money Grin

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 20:01

I though the same Durham my feet felt like new

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 20:03

Mandy they don't add any chemicals to the water and these fish already feed off dead skin off other fish, mainly sharks etc. That's what these fish eat dead skin so how is it cruel?

Mandy2003 · 21/06/2011 20:09

Paragraph 7 after a quick search

Pumpernickel10 · 21/06/2011 20:14

Thanks Mandy I wasn't sure to be honest, thanks for that, it's give me something to think about. I think it's a new thing in the UK so we don't know of the dangers with it, I certainly didn't.

Mandy2003 · 21/06/2011 20:16

OK Pumpernickel Smile

I had a further search, most of the references have copied the Observer article word for word but I think this gives a fairly good view.

ashamedandconfused · 21/06/2011 20:36

OMG have you seen further down in that link!! bull semen conditioner and nightingale droppings for facials!!!!!

aquashiv · 21/06/2011 20:43

I had it done and spent most of the time time trying not to screach. It does bloody hurt. The queue cleared. My feet were smoother though.... Imagine being them fish in the old food chain - poor things yuck.

hiddenhome · 21/06/2011 20:44

Fish should not be used in this way. They're living creatures and deserve some respect. The environment that they are kept in is not natural and can lead to their deaths. Ask the store owners how often they need to restock Hmm

According to dd you are not allowed to have them nibbled if you have veruccas, wonder if it applies to corns too?

sherbetpips · 21/06/2011 20:54

Limbo - no corns are not viral

LittleMissFlustered · 21/06/2011 21:03

Anothermum, it's rather random, just a little booth in the middle of the shopping centre with no privacy at all! They only do eyebrows apparently, obviously that makes it ok...
