to wonder why lesbians go for women that look like men?

surely if you fancy women you'd want to go out with a woman that looked like \ woman not a man.
nothing against gay/lesbians at all.

but this seems a bit strange to me

OP posts:

I'm going to apologize straight off! I only know two lesbians at all well, and they are married to each other, so I have zero real experience.

My friend married her wife two or three years ago - they are both lovely, normal people who like to tease me a bit about my terrible provincialism!

But one of this couple is very "manly" (shaved head, "male" clothing, could be a young man). The other is more "feminine", but still has very short hair, and a very masculine sort of tailoring about her (smart) dress.

They do look like stereotypical lesbians. I was drunk open enough to ask about why they went for this look last year at a meal we were having together at my house a few months ago. They replied that it was important.

I realised I was being crass in the morning, but I don't think the OP deserves villification.

CRS · 20/06/2011 23:44

My friends were very tolerant of my ignorance! Smile

Carminaburana · 20/06/2011 23:48

It's not bigotry sparky - very sorry.
I don't bat for your side so maybe i can see it for what it is - harmless.

lesley33 · 21/06/2011 00:03

Sparky, you sound exactly like my type! But I agree I don't think it is bigotry from the OP - just not understanding that wanting to look butch isn't the same as wanting to look like a man.

lesley33 · 21/06/2011 00:05

Yes CRS - some lesbians think it is important to look like a lesbian. Part of the challenging people's automatic assumption that all women are straight.

sparky246 · 21/06/2011 00:15

oh the op started off ok-it just got worse lesley.

sparky246 · 21/06/2011 00:27

and somewhere along the line we was all walking dogs/guinnipigs and rabbits-
or it could of been cats-this made my cock a teils look bad-ah lets not talk about the cocks.
actually-someone must of put something in all of our teas and none of us are making sense.
sorry-still cant stop taking the piss.
no-my posts wasnt against the op x

lesley33 · 21/06/2011 00:31

Sparky - Yes there was bigotry from some other posters. Probably unavoidable on a thread like this. But at least it rallied a few of us to posting here on the thread. And no, lets not talk about cocks!x

sparky246 · 21/06/2011 00:47

lol yeah-it was a bit unovoidable wasnt it-after all this is aibu.

Just wanted to say thanks to the late night lesbians if any of you come back here this morning - I've wondered before why lesbians often choose to dress in a different way from the heterosexual 'norm' and I think I understand better now.

Cattleprod · 21/06/2011 08:23

I have a question - many times I've heard gay men refer to themselves as female. 'Auntie Gok' is a sleb example, but I've often heard my gay male friends (the more camp ones anyway) call themselves a 'naughty girl', 'fabulous queen' etc. Yet the theme throughout this very interesting thread has been 'We're lesbians, we're women, we don't look like men (Bernard Manning or otherwise!), we just prefer a more 'butch' look.

I just wondered if anyone has come across a lesbian who does refer to herself as 'male' in any context?

ive often wondered the same as the OP :)

they dont find men attractive, but go for women who dress and act like men?? always found that oddConfused :)

destinationzero · 21/06/2011 10:08

this is a very interesting thread and also very funny. i can't understand the shouts of 'troll' and 'homophobia' these people are looking for a fight and really should get off the internet, thankfully no one took the bait and they left. on a site that is mainly female, with a fair few lesbians, it's a valid discussion. homosexuals are not a seperate race that need protecting from any form of discussion whatsoever, plus all the gay men i know like nothing better than talking about themselves Grin
if a thread was started about women liking short men, or why do short men love very tall women, nothing would be said Hmm
and a lot of the gay men i know are happy to refer to themselves as 'girls', so it is interesting.

Are you actually my late Father in Law OP? This was a favourite way of his to start an argument, normally with his sons new girlfriends.

That or announcing he was a foot fetishist.

vintageteacups · 21/06/2011 10:38

I think Hester made the point well.

The general, incorrect stereotypical picture of a lesbian is a manly one.

Therefore, when the OP sees feminine women in the street, she perhaps assumes they are friends going shopping together rather than thinking they might be a couple.

Actually stayfrosty - I have a very very good friend who happens to be a lesbian - she's tall(ish) tanned - really short dark spikey hair - very good looking, a couple of facial piercings ( no tattoos thank god) - she looks very 'blokish' - She refers to herself as a bloke - dresses/acts like a man - smells like a man ( in the stuff she uses ) - I'm heterosexual but she could have me falling at her feet - and the attraction is because she's the total opposite of me. And funnily enough - she only likes very girly looking women -
But she's just a mate, so I'm obviously not as qualified to have an opinion - but I've given it to you anyway.
I know one thing though - she'd laugh at this thread because she doesn't give a toss about crap like this / she has masses of confidence and loadsa other qualities I wouldn't mind having -
