I am completely judging her for buying a £98,000,000 second home, her first cost £56,000,000.

I'm not jealous, it just makes me feel quite sick that people are dying of starvation and that amount of money would go a long way towards making the world a better place IMO, aibu?

It depends if that money would be all or partly lost to third world corruption really. Also how do you know that she and her family haven't donated similar sums to charity?

Personally I always think the same thing about anyone spending more than £10k on a car.

Unless we all give a certain percentage of our disposable income to charity, then we could all be accused of being greedy, wasteful, selfish etc.

I don't even know who she is. It is rather a lot to spend on a house, but if she's got it surely it's entirely up to her what she does? As Emo says, how do you know she hasn't already donated that much money to charity?

If you exist on bare essentials and give everything else to charity then good on you but if you don't then you're not in a position to judge.

Unless you only buy essentials to live and give everything else to the starving poor then you can't really judge. It's just a difference of scale.

Either way YABU. The world doesn't work the way you want it to. It's up to her and you have no idea what else she might be doing with her money. But even if she doesn't give a cent to charity, it's not for you to decide what she does with her money.

YABU... I don't know if the property is in the UK or not but, if it is, great. If not.. so what? We need rich people to spend and invest their money, not keep it salted away in bank vaults or hidden under mattresses. When it gets spent there's more money in someone else's pocket, a bit of tax goes to the treasury and the world goes around.

YABU - you could apply the same argument to everyone. Why buy a house that costs £175,000 when there are people starving? You could buy one for £150,000 and give the money you'd save on the mortgage to charity.

I don't get that at all. Even if you wrapped gifts for a frickin' living why would you need more than one room? You'd still find yourself wandering around looking for the sellotape, I bet.

I would like a gift wrapping room. Several large tables, with big rolls of lovely wrapping paper for all occasions hung on the wall like tinfoil. Ribbons, bows, bits and bobs etc. But more than one? Come on!

Agree with MorticiaAddams and mouseanon.Nearly everybody in this country buys luxury items, just not to the same degree, while poor people in the world are starving and lack the barest of essentials. Do you give every spare penny to charity, OP and live only on essentials? If you suddenly came into a fortune, would you give it all away? I know I wouldn't, I'd certainly give some to charity, but I'd also use a lot of it to make my own life more comfortable. Selfish, maybe but I think most people would do the same.

i don't actually blame the people involved, it's more the system which a. worships them as gods just for being rich b. fails to tax them so others can live at a fraction of the comfort they do.

It is none of your business how other people spend their money, you should just be greatful for the amount of tax taken from them that helps pay for your schools and hospitals. I bet she has paid more tax than you.

I never understand why anyone questions people spending their own money. People spending money creates employment. I suspect she will need an army of people to run it and maintain it. Then it will probably need redecorating etc so more money spent. There will also be local taxes to pay as well.

YANBU. I'm not usually like this but when I read the interview in last weeks papers I felt nothing but contempt for the silly little girl.

I blame her father. By allowing her to have so much he has not given her the opportunity to lead a normal life and she will be a less rounded human being as a result.

I think we should all go and live in it with her!

Petronella Wyatt will only have paid tax if she is required to. She may just be living off Bernie's income. Not dissimilar to Phillip Green (Top Shop) getting his money paid to his wife in tax-free Monaco
