To feel really angry that Petra Eccleston is buying a £98 million pound housewhile while people are starving?

mightybright · 18/06/2011 09:29

I am completely judging her for buying a £98,000,000 second home, her first cost £56,000,000.

I'm not jealous, it just makes me feel quite sick that people are dying of starvation and that amount of money would go a long way towards making the world a better place IMO, aibu?

OP posts:
MarknadNutidaPlats · 18/06/2011 12:48

Her money, her choice end of.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/06/2011 12:50

I couldn't give two hoots about the person in question. As I said upthread, I could only guess at who she was. But it makes me laugh when people like the op attack the likes of her and lay the problems of the world at her shoulders. How far do you really think the money for that house would go? Drop in the ocean is how far.

You've ignored all of the points about how much of her family's money is going into the economy, how much her father gives to charity and how many wealthier people, governments and businesses you are ignoring. Because none of that suits your envious little cause. Grow up please, you're embarrassing yourself.

OurPlanetNeptune · 18/06/2011 12:51

SardineQueen, excellent posts.

OP, YABU.

ComradeJing · 18/06/2011 12:52

Good on her if that's how she wants to spend her cash. I couldn't give a flying fig what she chooses to spend her money on.

YABVU

SardineQueen · 18/06/2011 12:52

Do you know her? Do you know if she gives any money to charity? Do you know if she gives any time to charity?

Your point was illogical as so many people rightly pointed out, this argument could be levelled at any one of us.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/06/2011 12:53

And yes, teenage politics is about the maturity level your argument has reached. Except I must apologise to some teenagers who do put more thought into their arguments than you have.

flippinada - I couldn't give two shits about 'the poor little rich girl', the OP asked a question and I answered it. Besides, It does get up my nose when people are jealous full stop, so its got nothing to do with 'the poor little rich girl', just more that I hate jealousy in people.

OurPlanetNeptune · 18/06/2011 12:57

Good job you don't have to then kerrymumbles. What does what she looks like have to do with anything? Jealous much?

allegrageller · 18/06/2011 12:58

it isn't 'jealousy' to think wealth is being concentrated more and more at higher levels and this loony priced house purchase is evidence of that.

For all i know this woman is a cokesnorting neurotic loon, who cares? I don't actually think it's great to be mega rich. Probably deforms your character.

The issue is how on earth we got to live in a world where houses can be worth £98k and yet the West doesn't have enough money to look after the health of its citizens.

smashinghairday · 18/06/2011 12:59

Did you miss the bit that said her father gives 50 MILLION a YEAR to charity??

Every two years he gives the equivalent of a house like that away.

Any of you lot bleating about how unfair it all is, do that?

Nah. thought not.

OurPlanetNeptune · 18/06/2011 13:04

Deforms your character to be rich Allegraeller? Like Fred and Rose West, Shipman, Nielsen, Peter Sutcliffe, Ted Bundy, Dahmer ...Oh wait no they were not mega rich. But Warren Buffet, Bill and Melinda Gates and Oprah are mega rich people and look how much the do for worthy causes.

flippinada · 18/06/2011 13:07

To anyone who thinks that jealousy is so dreadful - why?

It's not actually shocking or awful to be jealous of someone (could be her, could be anyone) who has so much money at their disposal that they can a)spend so much on a property and b)will never, ever have to worry about money.

OurPlanetNeptune · 18/06/2011 13:10

flippinada Jealousy is ugly, negative and very self destructive. Yes it is dreadful.

BalloonSlayer · 18/06/2011 13:11

I expect someone living in the third world on a bowl of rice a day would call my throwing the leftovers of my DCs lunch into the bin an obscene waste of money.

And they would be right. Sad

We all waste money, it's all a matter of scale.

Presumably this house has a re-sell value, unlike the food I have binned.

smashinghairday · 18/06/2011 13:12

Snort @ Neptune.

Ye gads, nowt like a bit of old fashioned politics of envy on a wet Saturday!

I suggest everyone who thinks it all so obscene takes off all but about £16K from their annual income and all savings, cars worth more than say, £500, food other than bread and rice, clothes other than one shirt and trousers etc and gives everything else to charity.
Oh , and give millions and millions to charity and tax every year.

Then you can legitimately bitch discuss how obscene Ms Ecclestone is.

I do wish people would fuck off with the rich bashing. When you give even a fraction of what most well off people give in taxes alone, then you can bloody moan.
Until then, enjoy the NHS, education, TC and benefits that are provided for in this country predominantly by the well off.

flippinada · 18/06/2011 13:15

Only if you act on it OurPlanetNeptune.

Lets not pretend it is not normal to feel it, please.

smashinghairday · 18/06/2011 13:16

I am categorically not jealous of Ms Ecclestone.

ShellyBoobs · 18/06/2011 13:19

Wow, I can't believe how jealous some people are!

No one knows this person, yet she's being berated and bitched about as if she's a criminal!

I also don't get the poster who mentions everyone looking up to rich people. Do they? Really? I personally couldn't give a toss how much money someone else has got.

Another point: who knows what will happen to the £98m that has changed hand? Some will go in taxes, the other will go to the seller. Maybe that person will give it to charity? Maybe they'll use it to start a business employing 1000 people and thus help them to prosper?

It's pathetic that some of us, as (relatively) rich westerners, are questioning someone else's charitable donations when we could all do a lot more for charity if we really wanted to. It's just easier to say that someone else should be doing it, rather than using your own wealth, isn't it.

OurPlanetNeptune · 18/06/2011 13:22

flippinada , I think you are confusing jealousy and envy. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I thought one is jealous of people, and envious of other's possessions. I know very few people who are actually jealous of other people. Those people who are jealous are normally incredibly bitter. No it is not normal, in your world maybe, but certain not mine.

purplebrickroad · 18/06/2011 13:34

I think that Calvin always kept himself on his very first wage and gave the rest to the poor. He is the only person I know who has done this but it is the logical thing to do for everyone who criticises Petra.

I know a very very wealthy person near me who tithes (10% obviously) to the Church. I only know this because someone who works at his stockbrokers (who shouldn't have) told me. I am dead impressed that he does this completely on the quiet and wonder who else does it.

Imagine living in that house and realising you had left your cardi in your bedroom?

(I don't think Bernie E has avoided tax here, has he? He must have paid tons of tax)

purplebrickroad · 18/06/2011 13:35

Would the estate agent have got 2%?

mumblechum1 · 18/06/2011 13:38

Dunno if someone's mentioned this already, but I have two points:

  1. She'll have paid 5% stamp duty, (assuming we're talking UK), so she's contributed almost £5million towards people on benefits, essential services, education & health.
  1. She's presumably married to Bernie Eccleston. You've got to feel sorry for her.
OurPlanetNeptune · 18/06/2011 13:41

No, Bernie Ecclestone is her father mumblechum.
