Or do we all need another Wine? I just find it all fascinating.

Not sure if I posted this on here before, but my experiences sound slightly like those of Tanith. Sorry for the long post.

Probably all very explainable, but were some spooky at the time. The first house we bought was a Victorian mid-terrace, built in 1893. The windows and a lot of other expensive things needed redoing, so it was always a bit draughty and chilly. Also we suspected it needed the electrics sorting, as sometimes you could put the iron on and the lights would go off-that kind of thing. And being mid terrace you could often hear people quite clearly next door, coming in the house, banging the door, going upstairs. Still, living there I got the eeby jeebies at least once a week if not more. I'd never really talked about finding it spooky to my mum but one time we had made some arrangement which involved her staying in the house on her own overnight and she said she'd rather not. Later on when we'd moved she said she hadn't wanted to stay there on her own because she found it spooky too!

Things happened like:

  • Just a general feeling that you weren't alone in the house even when you were. To the point it felt almost rude not to say something, so I'd often say "Goodbye!" on leaving an 'empty' house and "Hello!" on coming back to one.
  • Being tapped on the shoulder in the kitchen
  • Hearing footsteps on the stairs/landing when we were all in bed
  • I haven't had them for a while, but while I lived there and before I lived there I used to have dreams about being in an unfamiliar house in the dark, and then suddenly getting a spooky feeling in the dream, then being unable to turn the lights on. One time I had this dream then got up to go to the loo. I tried to put the landing light on and it wouldn't come on, nor the downstairs hall light. (This often happened, but it wasn't very helpful after that dream :( ).
  • The 'power cut/blown fuses' happened far more often when I was there on my own.
  • The clock radio would come on by itself - it hadn't been set to come on, or put on 'sleep' or anything. I looked, and the switch was in the "off" position.
  • Once when I was watching TV with DH, then DP, a voice came out of the TV set, louder and out of all sync with the programme we were watching, and said something like "Kathy? Kathy?" Like a continuity announcer speaking over the programme but louder. That's the explanation we put it down to, but still. Confused

-One time at night there were really loud noises coming from the kitchen, so loud it sounded like two people were having a fight and knocking over furniture (the furniture was all fitted, so you couldn't knock anything over anyway). I thought we had burglars. At the time my MIL had had a clear out of DP's stuff from their house and some stuff was sitting on the landing waiting to go in the loft. One item was an old cavalry sword (don't know why DP had this?) and for some reason I picked it up and shouted "Hello, is there anyone there?" from the top of the stairs. The noises stopped, but then started again as I proceeded down the stairs. I then turned and went back up to tell DP what was going on. Then I went right downstairs and the kitchen door was open, I couldn't see anyone in there, so I went in and switched the light on and there wasn't. DP said it was probably foxes or cats making a noise outside which had sounded like it was inside, but it was strange.

OK and another one. I once went to a Hallowe'en party about ten years ago at the London Dungeon, ok already set up for spookiness there, and TBH I'm not that keen on Hallowe'eny stuff anyway but go along with it. Before I went there I'd already had funny feelings about the area around London Bridge/Tooley St, just felt like I was uncomfortable there and didn't want to be there, and I don't usually feel like that about places unless there are tangible reasons - i.e. it looks like a dangerous/rough area, and this area just seemed like lots of others in London, just normal really.

Anyway I never felt comfortable in the Dungeon (don't really like wax exhibits/chamber of horrors as they may be exhibits but about stuff that mostly actually happened and it upsets me about what people did/do to one another :() in spite of having one or two drinks. But I started to feel very, very sad, terribly negative and was holding back the tears, also felt hot and claustrophobic and like I couldn't get my breath properly (never experienced this before, I'm not asthmatic or anything) or that there was something in my throat. I persuaded a couple of friends to come out with me and we decided to head off the the pub down the street instead. Whereupon I started to feel much better.

Didn't think much of it again until a year or so later, just put it down to the exhibits being a bit grim. I heard/read that during the second world war, there was an air raid shelter there which took a direct hit and lots of people were killed.

Here's a link:

www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/57/a2335457.shtml

^Our route then led us into Crucifix Lane and St Thomas Street past the bricked-up Arches of the roads underneath London-Bridge Station that lead to Tooley Street.
These Arches were used as Air-Raid Shelters by the Residents of the many Tenement Buildings nearby. They thought they were safe, and used to sleep in them, but around 300 people died when the Stainer Street Arch received a direct hit through the Station at the height of the Blitz.^

hardcheese don't know if Derek Acorah is a fraud or not he didnt say anything to me, like I said he spoke to a man behind me about a jock andrews then my exh rang me the next day to tell me he had a dream about my dad mentioning a jock Andrews,

Tanith · 24/08/2011 22:14

Insomnia11 Do you know, I'd completely forgotten about the electrics until you mentioned the fuses going!

We were having to replace bulbs and fuses weekly at the time. We thought there must be a problem with the wiring and had the whole house rewired, but it made no difference.

Again, the problem disappeared after I'd had my little chat. I wonder if there was anything in it?

Utopian · 26/08/2011 16:39

:)..more, more!

The most scariest experience I had was at my old office where no one, even the skeptics felt uncomfortable on their own. Doors would shut on their own, the tap would start running and once a telephone that wasn't even plugged in starting ringing in the storage room. Don't know how much I believe it, but the building manager said that it was built on a graveyard and that not all the bodies were exhumed properly...or did he just recounted the main plot behind Poltergeist for the fun of it?! I'm not sure but the building is defo right next to a church...

Gay40 · 26/08/2011 16:55

I'm a big old cynic and so is DP. However, when DD was about 3, we had friends to stay and introduced them to DD by their names (she had met them several times before but at 3 etc). From then on, DD called one of them by her mum's name (her mum had died the year before). The thing is, we did not even know what our friend's mum was called.
Later that night, we could hear DD chattering away to someone while she was in bed. We were all downstairs. When I popped up and asked who she was talking to, she giggled and said the name of our friend's mum.

I've got a few more stories, this time its all about my dad's house.

  • My brother had just finished a night shift, it was about 6am, was walking upstairs going to the toilet and then to bed, shouted out to my dad who was in bed, that he was back and just having a general conversation with my dad. My dad was mumbling away so my brother said he'd go in and see him as he couldn't hear him. Anyway, he went to the toilet and then into my dad's room but there was no-one there. My dad had been called into work earlier that morning.
  • When my ds1 was about 3 my dad was looking after him, they were in my dad's bedroom playing on the pc, they had their backs to the open door when my ds1 turned around to look at the door and said "who's that man granda?" my dad looked but of course there was no-one there when ds1 said "doesn't matter, he's gone now".
  • One day we were going shopping so went to see if my dad wanted to come with us. My other brother knocked on while we waited in the car. He heard my dad shout "hold on" so we waited...and waited and waited a bit more. I decided to phone him and see what the hold up was when he said he was at work.

I wonder what happens once a place that is haunted is destroyed and nothing is rebuilt on it.

I worked in a house that was definitely haunted, but it's since been torn down and the land used for agricultural purposes.

I wonder what became of whatever or whoever it was who used to scare us out our wits.

Pedallleur · 28/08/2011 20:10

I've not read all the thread but I met someone the other week at work who was a paranormal investigator in his spare time. He had a couple of interesting stories and was convinced about there being something else - another dimension/a spirit world, whatever.

queenmaeve · 28/08/2011 20:23

Oh I am spooked reading this! Good stuff though

chubbly · 28/08/2011 21:29

Argh this thread scares me every time but I keep coming back for more. Actually my mum was telling me how her workplace has a ghost, it's a converted mansion, now used for biochemical research. But the grounds are all the same as they were, it was built in 1914 so not that old, but security staff and a few others have all seen a woman that walks around the grounds near an ornamental pond. She's dressed in a long white gown and she's not fully there- you can see through her. My mum hasn't seen her but has worked there for 25 years so has met quite a few people that have. She's very rational being a research scientist but she can't explain how so many people have seen the same thing.

Insomnia11 · 30/08/2011 16:03

Anyway, he went to the toilet and then into my dad's room but there was no-one there. My dad had been called into work earlier that morning.

Brrr Shock

and several times, I was sure someone had entered the room, assumed it was DH and started talking to him, only to find no-one there

Oh yes, that happened to me too, Tanith. I assumed I had heard next door coming back and mistook it for our front door, but there was one time that happened when I felt I could almost see something when I went into the room starting a conversation with what I thought was DH. I felt daft rather than scared, like whatever was there felt a bit daft/embarrassed too!

Also I had forgotten that when I was 3/4, I used to be sometimes sitting in the living room say with one adult, or two adults and I sometimes caught snippets of what seemed to be another conversation going on, or someone saying my name. I remember saying "Who said that, mummy?" or "Did you say my name?" But my mum/dad or whoever would say they hadn't heard anything or said my name. I don't remember it happening after I started school.

Purplebuns · 31/10/2011 17:41

In my house growing up, the top floor and stairs going up 'felt' really scary even in the day, and in the evening it would feel like someone was right behind you, and you would end up running up the stairs terrified with it chasing you.
I had this happen every single time I went up those stairs.
I ended up mentioning this to my step sis who said it happened to her to and we decided to not say anything to my little sister at all. A couple of years later she asked if we felt the chasing.
The chasing only seemed to happen to girls/women and guests also experienced it.

redcamels · 01/11/2011 08:33

I read this thread in bed on my phone last night and got so shitted up I had to text DH to come to bed (was too scared to get out of bed and get him).

He told me I was an idiot. Grin

redcamels · 01/11/2011 08:46

A family member attended the scene of the following:

On 2nd Dec 2002 Police received several 999 calls with all of the callers stating they had just seen car headlights careering off the carriageway into the undergrowth at high speed. The emergency services attended the scene but found nothing. After an extensive search they discovered a wrecked, twisted vauxhall Astra containing the decomposing remains of a driver. The Astra was found at the exact spot of the 999 reports but was estimated to have crashed in July. The Astra was buried deep in undergrowth, invisible from the road.

The driver was later identified by dental records.

Google 'A3 ghost car'. Spooky.

ApplesinmyPocket · 01/11/2011 09:22

I googled it as suggested and got as many 'Ghost car debunked' hits as anything. Of course there will be a rational explanation, there always is. I don't think there's one single, reliable, widely-accepted proof of anything "supernatural" having happened ever, has there?

redcamels · 01/11/2011 10:35

Nah, you're right. Total bullshit.

TheRealMrsHannigan · 01/11/2011 20:54

I watched a documentary that scared the shit out of me. I don't think the case has ever been disproven, google the Enfield ghost/poltergeist.

Insomnia11 · 29/12/2011 20:07

I've just been pet sitting in a Victorian three storey town house. Downstairs felt fairly comfortable, although the door did do a good old haunted house creaking sound as I went in, which my daughter remarked on.

I had to go up to the first floor into a bedroom to look after some of the pets. It reminded me a bit of our old house with the original fireplaces - wind whistling down them and the fact you could hear noises from next door. Anyway nothing happened really, just explainable sounds, feeling uncomfortable, hairs standing up on the back of my neck and the feeling of almost seeing something out of the corner of my eye. I was quite glad to finish going there though and feel quite brave being most of the time on my own!

rainbow2000 · 23/04/2012 11:06

Ive had loads of stuff but the freakiest one was seeing my son go into his room from the bathroom only to come up the stairs 10 seconds later. It wasnt his brother as they look nothing alike.

theressomethingaboutmarie · 23/04/2012 11:09

I woke at 5am one morning to feel someone putting what felt like a reassuring hand on my thigh. I thought nothing of it and went back to sleep. My dad called me later to tell me that my beloved nan had died at 5am that morning. I remain convinced that she was saying goodbye (2 years ago and I'm crying as I type - I miss her so much) and am incredibly thankful that she did.

Ok, so. I have not read all of this thread however I dont seem to see anything about drips of water. I have drops of water that follow me arround, its been like this as long as i can remember. Doesnt matter where i am. They will drip down door frames usually 2/3 drops at a time daily. I had to turn away from a door in work the other day as i could see them dripping down the frame...( the girls i work with must think i am a right nut case Lol) If something big is going to happen or i am stressed they fly down the bannisters and wizz past my head maybe 9/10 of them but allot faster than usual. To this day i dont really know what it means.... Maybe someone on here will know??

YellowWellies · 23/04/2012 16:51

Woo Sarah that really scared me - I've no idea what it means?

I'm a scientist but definitely a believer. Have had lots of paranormal things happen to myself and family - thankfully nothing really bad though. Here is my favourite story, told to me by a dear friend - who is very honest and a pragmatic down to earth nurse. Not someone prone to flight of fancy and generally the sort of optimistic good egg you'd like to have around you in a crisis (I hope if she reads this she won't mind me sharing as it's anonymous):

She and her now DH had moved to a rented house in a new town they had just moved to for work. When they were unpacking their possessions, DH had collected together the usual boxes of stuff to store in the loft. On lifting the loft hatch he had noticed boxes of possessions of the previous tenants sitting right next to the hatch. He'd climbed into the loft and found that the boxes were full of valuables and also photo albums and other things you would not willingly leave. He then started to feel violently ill and had to climb out of the loft. Both of the couple were a little unnerved at what had happened to the previous tenants. The violent illness returned whenever either of them went to the loft.

Odd events started to happen. Possessions moving. Things breaking. The central heating thermostat always being turned to 0c when they got up in the morning - despite knowing that they always left it set on 15c. This latter oddity in particularly convinced the DH that the neighbours or landlord must have keys and be playing tricks. So from then on the doors were chained as well as locked each night. It still happened.

The oddest bit was one day when they were having a BBQ with friends. The DH had gone inside to get more drinks from the fridge when he noticed an odd reflection flash past him on the patio door. He glanced at it again - but nothing was there, then he looked down and saw a mysterious hairy foot and ankle and another leg in between his own legs, he looked away, thinking he was going mad (looked over his shoulder nothing there), looked down and yep, the leg was still there. All of the guests could be seen outside - so it wasn't one of them! He looked again and the leg was gone.

Voices and footsteps started to be heard around the house after this. In particular it seemed to focus on the wife, with voices stopping as soon as she entered an empty room - when she had distinctly heard conversation through the door. They started to hear whispered voices in their ears when in bed. Really awful hissed voices and the sense of warm breath on their cheeks. One in particular said quite simply 'get her' referring to the DW. The DH lied to her and told her it said 'get out' which they did - moving out the next day.

Apparently their ex landlord knows all this (and stories from many previous tenants) and still lets it out to oblivious new tenants. Nice man!
