Not a bit scary, I'm afraid, but I did think our last house had a ghost.
It started with the silly things: lights on when I thought I'd switched them off, the telly or DVD starting by themselves, rooms suddenly draughty, that sort of thing. Sometimes a lavender smell - we did have a few big bushes of the stuff at the bottom of the garden, so I didn't think it odd.
Our cats would suddenly start purring as though someone was stroking them. They would stare intently at a point in the room, but cats often do that sort of thing.
Doors began opening and shutting by themselves, and I assumed a draught again. Try as I might, I could never find the source of the draught.
The kettle boiled once without being switched on and several times, I was sure someone had entered the room, assumed it was DH and started talking to him, only to find no-one there.
Now, I've seen Poltergeist like most people so I started to worry a bit. Then I remembered that the cats were unfazed, even seemed to like whatever it was. That made me wonder because I'd always heard that cats would react badly to ghosts and run away. Either this was a friendly ghost or I was in serious need of a few early nights and no scary films :)
Then I got chatting to our new neighbour, who told me about the couple who'd lived there. I'd met the man, a lovely elderly man who was moving to be with his daughter. His wife of many years had died several years before. When I told him I was sorry for his loss, he'd said "No, no! No need to feel sorry. I had many happy years with her. I was so lucky." She was, by all accounts, a very kind, gentle woman who'd suffered badly in her last months.
And the neighbour told us she'd loved cats but could never have one because her husband had an allergy to them.
I decided to ignore our "ghost". I wasn't sure I believed in her anyway and, if she did exist, any ghost that my cats accepted was ok by me.
Then we heard that the old man had died.
That evening, feeling very, very silly, I sat on the edge of my bed, purring cats next to me, and talked to her. I told her about her husband and I thanked her for the house and garden and I told her she needn't worry, I would take good care of it all. I told her it was time to let go and join her husband. I probably added a few other reassurances that I can't remember now.
Then I sat there, feeling all kinds of fool and thankful no-one had been listening - they'd have thought I was mad!
Never had another incident. Did I send her to the "other side"? No idea!
