< marks place in thread and sits with feet up >. absolotely love this thread! :) my dad is a medium and i'm absolutely fascinated by all things paranormal. yes he's seen spirits before, one followed him everywhere for 2weeks just so he could get my dad to pass on a message to his wife! he said he's never ever scared of them. Also I can remember putting dd to bed once when she said 'mummy can you tell the doggy to get down off my bed please?' we don't have any pets!!! :o x

OrganicFreeRangeBoys · 22/08/2011 15:51

In my old house.

Nothing ever happened until the day I brought my oldest son home from the hospital. Walking through the house with him and I was hit with the strongest smell of Old Spice.

Every time I walked through that same room I would be hit by the smell, I would hear a man singing over the baby monitor when I had put son down for his nap. Books would appear next to his cot and when I would go up to check, the rocking chair would still be moving.

As son got older he would babble and giggle away to whoever it was that was there.

With my partner working away, it was strangely comforting to know someone else was keeping an eye on my son.

It all stopped when we moved out of that house.

I cant say this is exactly scary or anything, but my DD1 (3.9) freaks out if we use a specific entrance/exit at our local shopping mall/centre.

The first time she did it, she had a complete melt down with sobbing and screaming (she very rarely tantrums and the times she has I can count on one hand with fingers spare)
I have asked her what it is that scares her so much and she says it hurts her head and makes her feel sick when we use that entrance/exit.
Inside the entrance/exit is a plaque that says that there was an abbey/monastery (I cant remember Blush ) on that site and when they were putting in the foundations for the shopping centre they found graves/bones/skeletons and have re-buried them in another cemetery.

I personally am an open minded skeptical scaredy cat but DD1 has spoken about my grandad who died before she was born and tells me about seeing him and about his musical teeth.

I have no idea what to think.

Papyrus · 22/08/2011 21:05

Its interesting, I definitely believe that there is a soul or something seperate from the body; that leaves after death.

I'm an archaeologist and spend a good deal of my working life studying human remains and they're no more creepy then a piece of pottery.

Give me a creepy house though and I'm liable to scare myself out of my wits!

Twosugarsplease · 23/08/2011 11:51

Hi everyone, I've sat myself down too, I love this ! Don't think I'm even half way through reading it yet but has been really interesting. I would so love all those people that say ' what a load of rubbish' to proven wrong, and a big fat ghost to give them the fright of their life ! I havent seen a ghost before, well I don't think I have, I remember when I was around 2 yo, standing up in my cot feeling very afraid at the sight of 3or 4 men stood against the wall with their back to me, they all looked identical to each other, then just one turned around and walked towards me, my room was lit by the street lights outside, so must have been night time still,I just must have carried on screaming until my mum came in, she picked me up and then I was cuddled into my mam and dad and that was it. Even now the memory so obviously clear. I have mentioned this to my mum, and she was suprisedi remembered so much about my room and where my cot was positioned, ( I also remember getting my nappy changed, and feeling anxious as I breathed in while my mum was fastening the pin !) another memory I have of being in that room is the reoccurring dreams I used to have, of a young girl around 12 with the whitest blonde hair I have ever seen, sat up in a hospital bed, of White sheets nothing else around her. In my dream I would be sat beside her, she was like my friend, she never spoke to me, the room she was in happened to be in a particular shop in my town I was familiar with as a child ( again I am only very young ) if ever my mum and me were in town I would ask to go to that shop on the chance I would see her ! But she was only ever in my dream, but again even now I can still remember what she looked like 35 yrs on. If anyone reading this has any answers for me I would love to hear you opinions. I only came on to say hi and got carried away ! I enjoyed telling my experience though. My dad passed away 10 yrs ago now and since his death I have become more interested, I just can't accept that he has just disappeared, there are far too many people out there with amazing experiences. The night of my dads funeral I dreamt that he hugged me, really tight and I could feed his bones on his shoulders and his back, the materiel of his sweater, was just so real. Next morning I woke up and thought 'wow' I felt soooo comforted by this, I have since had about 4 maybe 5 of these what I call ' visits ' they are far too vivid and emotional to be a dream. So maybe I have experienced something after all. To actually see my dad would be,,,gosh! Too fab for words. x

Utopian · 23/08/2011 11:54

Wow I stand corrected to those that have seen and heard of the ghost animals, MurielTheActor, Insomnia11 and Papyrus. I guess they have spirits so would seem reasonable that they could come back as ghosts too.

Mum reminded me of a story we had once heard in Cornwall when we were kids about a dog that haunts Kynance Cove, our dogs would never settle there and would insesently bark at one of the main inlets there. A bloke at our village pub told us that it was very common for dogs to not like it there as they (the locals) believe it to be haunted by a dog. The story goes that the dog and owner were investigating the caves and got cut off by the sea. By the time a rescue boat got to them they had drown but the dog was still fiercely protecting his body and barking at the rescuers. Apparantly if you go too near where the bodies where found the dog starts growling and barking! Funnily enough never been there since with or without the dogs!!!

There's a place near here where there's a big alsatian shaped dog - I've walked with my dog there and some mornings she rushes off barking to a spot in a large wall - other mornings nothing. A friend has seen it in the early morning - real enough that she put her lab on a lead because he didn't like alsatians - but as she approached it walked off into the wall - same spot that my dog went to.

Utopian · 23/08/2011 12:14

LOL! I've properly spooked myself reading this thread and working home alone today so when the paused telly came back on whilst I was upstairs (no, nothing spooky it just does that after about 15 mins!!) I nearly peed with fright!! Think I need to get some work done and stop being so silly!

UserNameNotAvailable · 23/08/2011 12:28

Great thread. Here's my experience's, sorry it will be a long post :

  • When I was about 17 I was babysitting next doors kids. I took my my younger brother who was about 8 months old. Before my neighbour went out she said the 3 girls were in bed. I was just going to check on them when I heard them laughing, it sounded like they were in their mam's room and her door was shut (their's was wide open) so I sneaked up to surprise them and burst through the door - no-one in there! They were all fast asleep in bed.
  • Another time, again babysitting same kids. Everyone was downstairs and I needed the toilet which is at the top of the stairs when I noticed a little pair of red tap dancing shoes lying next to the bathroom door. I was thinking how cute they looked as I had a pair when I was little. Anyway, I went back downstairs and didn't give them another thought until a little while later I had to go back upstairs for something and here they were side by side on the top stair. No-one had been out of the sitting room in that time. I hated that house. It never felt right even the woman whose house it was didn't like it.
  • When I lived at home with my mam, my then bf, best friend and her bf (my now df!! Hmm ) were waiting downstairs for me to get ready after a shower when I heard someone sort of hop/run up the stairs. I shouted to wait as I was only in a towel when it occured to me I could hear them all talking and laughing in the sitting room below me. No-one else was in the house.
  • In the house I live in now, when we first moved in and the stairs were uncarpeted we would hear tapping on the stairs every night. It stopped when we got carpet put down.
  • Earlier this year when we had the snow/low temp I was going into the kitchen when I could hear water gushing but it sounded muffled. I thought it was pipes under the floor etc but could only hear it at a certain part near the kitchen door. I stood listening after checking the bathroom etc and worked out it was coming from the wash-house (kitchen door is next to back door which leads into a brick room type thingy - I live in a semi detached house) The wash house is only used to store garden furniture/toys etc so we hadn't been out there but water from the tap had flooded the place. I had to climb over things to get to the tap and turn it off. It's the type of tap that needs turning in a screwing motion. It took me ages to turn it off. It could have been the cold weather that made the tap burst but if thats the case why was it turned on and the water not running from the pipe? Confused
WhataTreat · 23/08/2011 22:30

I've only had the one spooky experience. Just after my Nan died I dreamed that I was walking along our road (she used to live about 10 houses down). After passing her house, I heard my name being called. As I turned around I realised it was her, at which point my dream turned into one of those lucid dreams, where you're aware that you are asleep and can control what happens. We had a long conversation, in which she encouraged me to act on something that had been playing on my mind for many years. After this, I said goodbye to her and headed towards my house, at which point I woke up.

About a week later I had the same dream of walking along the road, when again she called my name. Again, I was aware that I was dreaming, and in control of what happened. I asked her if she was happy, and she said that Heaven was very peaceful, but she hadn't found J just yet (an old, dear friend who passed a few years previously). I told her to keep looking, and that she'd find him and be happy. She waved me off again, and the dream ended.

This was a few years ago, and I often hope that she'll visit me again! I found it a great source of comfort, even if it was all in my head!!

With regards to sleep paralysis, I often get this when I wake in the morning and (lazily!) drift back off to sleep. At the point just before I fall asleep I am aware that it will happen, but I'm too far gone to stop it!! Horrible feeling, I've tried talking and spend most of the time concentrating really hard on shaking myself awake! Tried the heavy breathing and managed a mumble to try and alert DP, but predictably he manages to sleep through!

I find all aspects of the paranormal and sleep disturbances hugely interesting - this thread has kept me entertained for a good few days on and off!!

MumblingRagDoll · 23/08/2011 22:47

GreenMonkeys Musical teeth!?? wtf? I had to reply to your post though because when my 7 year old ws about 2 she also had a very adverse reaction to a place..it was just a patch of green with a few old trees on it in our village at the time, she HATED it there and wouldn't set foot on it. Particularly didn't like the trees. Turns out it was the site of an old burial ground...for wait for it...people who had been hung on the adjacent crossroads! There was also a cock fighting area there...twas dark and spooky.

2littlegreenmonkeys · 23/08/2011 22:54

MumblingRagDoll Grin my grandad had false teeth and played tunes with them by 'clicking' & 'clacking' his teeth together. I used to make him play these tunes over and over again. I almost crapped myself when DD came out with Gra Gra (her name for grandads) T's musical teeth Grin

It is scary that DC can sense/feel something with particular areas and not like them. We have to go around the long way if we need to leave the shopping centre at that side as DD goes in to meltdown. I should probably use it more to expose it to her and show her that her anxiety is misplaced but I cant quite bring myself to do it.

ObviouslyOblivious · 23/08/2011 23:10

The thread is back!

I'd be interested to know if anyone has ever stayed at Avon Tyrell youth hostel in the New Forest, and if so did you experience anything strange?

I went there on a primary school trip (must have been about 1988) and saw a few strange things. One was lights dancing all over the ceiling in a pitch black room, in the dark forest, with no one else awake. No idea what that was!

MumblingRagDoll · 24/08/2011 01:20

Oooh no! Don't make her go in that way. I'm also very sensitive to places...some of them just depress me for no apparent reason. There is a lane near my town, which is long, curvy and surrounded by trees...it's about a mile long and growing up I always got a feeling of dread and depresion when we drove down there. Now I know that the lane has a massive long list of deaths by accidents....car crashes...loads and loads of them over the years, far more than your average road. I couldn't have known that as a child...but I felt it. Sad

It must be due to the shape of it...and the trees. A combinatin of things have made it a black spot.

hairfullofsnakes · 24/08/2011 06:18

What a fascinating thread!

Tanith · 24/08/2011 08:33

Not a bit scary, I'm afraid, but I did think our last house had a ghost.

It started with the silly things: lights on when I thought I'd switched them off, the telly or DVD starting by themselves, rooms suddenly draughty, that sort of thing. Sometimes a lavender smell - we did have a few big bushes of the stuff at the bottom of the garden, so I didn't think it odd.
Our cats would suddenly start purring as though someone was stroking them. They would stare intently at a point in the room, but cats often do that sort of thing.
Doors began opening and shutting by themselves, and I assumed a draught again. Try as I might, I could never find the source of the draught.
The kettle boiled once without being switched on and several times, I was sure someone had entered the room, assumed it was DH and started talking to him, only to find no-one there.

Now, I've seen Poltergeist like most people so I started to worry a bit. Then I remembered that the cats were unfazed, even seemed to like whatever it was. That made me wonder because I'd always heard that cats would react badly to ghosts and run away. Either this was a friendly ghost or I was in serious need of a few early nights and no scary films :)

Then I got chatting to our new neighbour, who told me about the couple who'd lived there. I'd met the man, a lovely elderly man who was moving to be with his daughter. His wife of many years had died several years before. When I told him I was sorry for his loss, he'd said "No, no! No need to feel sorry. I had many happy years with her. I was so lucky." She was, by all accounts, a very kind, gentle woman who'd suffered badly in her last months.

And the neighbour told us she'd loved cats but could never have one because her husband had an allergy to them.

I decided to ignore our "ghost". I wasn't sure I believed in her anyway and, if she did exist, any ghost that my cats accepted was ok by me.

Then we heard that the old man had died.

That evening, feeling very, very silly, I sat on the edge of my bed, purring cats next to me, and talked to her. I told her about her husband and I thanked her for the house and garden and I told her she needn't worry, I would take good care of it all. I told her it was time to let go and join her husband. I probably added a few other reassurances that I can't remember now.

Then I sat there, feeling all kinds of fool and thankful no-one had been listening - they'd have thought I was mad!

Never had another incident. Did I send her to the "other side"? No idea!

Anyone have any Angel experiences?

creamola · 24/08/2011 12:40

i had feathers float down for months when I was grieving for someone close .

my son though 'see's dead people' .

When my sister in law was in hospital he kept asking 'who are all these people, they shouldn't be crowding Aunty L's bed'.........turned out 3 years later he recognised them all via old photo's and also knew their names.

he also spent about an hour playing with non visible ghost children in a graveyard one day..........he was holding entire conversations and playing games with these guys Shock

MoominsAreScary · 24/08/2011 13:01

Not an angel as such but when I was 4 nearly 5 my gran passed away, what I can only describe as a fairy came to my bedroom one night and told me that my gran had been Ill and had gone to heaven. My mum told me the next day that she had died.

My dad has visited me a few times in dreams and told me things i didn't know that my mum later confermed.

A few years ago I went to see Derek Acorah at the local concert hall, No one came through for me but the man sat behind us had a message from an uncle called Jock Andrews

The next day I had a call from my exh who didn't know I'd been to a medium. He said he'd had a dream about my dad who told him to let me know he was there and to remind me of Jock Andrews! Must say it freaked me out abit

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 24/08/2011 13:56

My friends' DH and three DC were killed in the Tsunami. It was an absolutely hideously ghastly horrible time. She managed to find three bodies, but her eldest son was missing.
She had been going back and forth to Phuket for about six months trying to find out what had happened to him because she wanted to cremate the whole family.
She made arrangments for it to be done on, for arguments sake August 24th.
On August 20th, she had a really vivid dream that her son had been mixed up and, rather than being classified as a Thai/English person, he had been identified as purely Thai.
She was able to locate him and the whole family were cremated together.

Aislingorla · 24/08/2011 14:40

Wonderful story, will help her find peace.

HardCheese · 24/08/2011 14:55

But Derek Acorah has been exposed as a fraud several times, using information he was pre-'fed' by producers on his show and claiming he was told it by his spirit guide etc.

And I honestly can't find any credible basis for belief in the supernatural in the behaviour of young children (by their nature suggestible, highly imaginative and not good at distinguishing between imaginary friends, characters from cartoons and books, seeing things vs making things up etc) playing with or talking to invisible people.

However, I will - to show willing - present a spooky story involving a child told to me by a close friend, who is also a friend of the person to whom it happened and who met her immediately afterwards, when she was still quite shaken. This happened about six months ago in a small Irish town which shall remain nameless. This woman, a new arrival in town, was walking down the street with her three year old daughter one day and vaguely registered a dignified, elderly man in dark clothes walking towards them. She ddn't notice anything strange about him, but, as he passed, her daughter said, 'Who are all those funny people walking behind that man?' Her mother thought this was odd, as the man was alone, but the child kept insisting that there were lots of 'funny people' walking behind him.

The mother put it out of her head, but mentioned it casually when she was chatting in the local butcher's shop later that day, and described the man. The neighbour she was talking to said the man she had seen was the local undertaker, who had been burying everyone in the town for decades.

mummymccar · 24/08/2011 15:24

Ooh enjoying this thread even though it is giving me the willies at home on my own! I've had dozens of experiences - I'm sure my childhood home is haunted.
One of my earliest memories is of hearing my sister getting out of bed upstairs, going to the toilet, flushing it and then going back to her room. Mum followed up a couple of seconds behind her and found her fast asleep in bed. No way she could have done it that fast.
Things used to move around my bedroom all the time; calendars used to change page whilst we were all out, things would disappear and reappear somewhere else. As a teenager I woke up to hear the chair at my desk being moved, thinking we were being burgled I sat up and started shouting. There was nobody there but the chair was still moving of its own accord. I didn't sleep in that room for weeks afterwards.
I was once about to walk out of the room, turned and found myself face to face with a blond girl, about 12 years old, wearing all white. Before I had a chance to react she walked straight through me. It felt really weird, like I was floating or something and there seemed to be some kind of wind circling around me. Very peaceful. It stopped and i turned to see her walk through the wall into my neighbour's house.
My sister used to see a woman standing outside of my bedroom all the time. She still won't be upstairs on her own. She's now 20.
I went to a friend's house once and could hear her little brother (about 4) chatting and laughing away to someone. He was supposed to be asleep so his sister and I popped our heads in to tell whoever was there to leave him alone (we thought it was her 9 year old brother), but he was on his own laughing into the air. Very creepy. We asked him who he was talking to and he said 'Grampy'. Just then the phone rang and her mum asked me to go home. My friend's grandad had just died unexpectedly.
I also used to babysit for a family that lived next door to a graveyard. That didn't last long. The children would always be talking to people that weren't there and sometimes cry at something they couldn't see. That family had serious trouble hanging onto any babysitters for longer than one visit. I only lasted 3!
