TO SAY It is being said that current pop music is coming close to being porno

What do you think.? I point out that I am much older than most of you and seem to have taken a lifelong interest in pop music. I remember the sex pistols causing a rumpus years ago.....that black geezer did My Ding A ling (chuck Berry) and Mary whitehouse complained.

The American thought Presleys [umping hips would end civilisation.. I gather what is being objected to now is videos.

On Ga Ga I think she is just a well-worked publicity stunt.

not about Lady Ga-Ga (jury still out here) but yes, some promo vids are nothing short of soft porn, perhaps used as a smokescreen for the lack of musical ability?

i remember when pop videos were narratives, or stories that even had no bearing on the song at all, but some, i feel now, some have lost the plot completely

Pinots Not my debate. The broadshets and the Today prog are covering it. I think parents of teenagers are getting a bit worried. It is now a real live issue. Plucking intellectuals involved.

Lady gaga is actually genuinely talented. she plays, she writes her own songs, but the truth is that singers need an image to make them sell.

I've let ds, 8, watch some 18 films so im a liberal parent but i didnt allow him to watch the last series of x factor because i think the sexual content is unsui5able.

i was at the local easter family fun day at the park and the kids were all sitting with their ice creams listening to the entertainment, some old tarty looking club singer singing Lilly Allen's 'It's Not Fair' about giving head etc - was rather amusing.

Rhianna offends me more than Lady Gaga does. There is a dearth of overtly sexual songs at the moment. And ones about drinking. I actually quite like the tunes of some of these songs, but I think the words are OTT and not great for kids and teens to be hearing as the mainstream. I also think its a sign of a not-so-great singer if they want to let sex sell rather than their talent. Its like comedians - I think its far cleverer and shows more talent to make comedy from general stuff rather than from smut and bad language. God...I never thought I'd sound Mary Whitehouse!

I remember like a virgin Madonna.I was a big fan at 5 lol.I didn't know what it meant,i wasn't harmed in any way and I remember that talk about sex song aswell and I was young then.I don't agree with soft porn music videos though.The worst one is that call on me music video

There is a huge sexual content and context to modern/pop music and music in general - I have a real issue with the videos and the pornographic elements to a lot of the performances but then I don't think banning and censorship is the way forward either.

It is extremely difficult to find anything on the BTvision Music on Demand section on our TV at home for 18 month old DS to have a dance to. I have to stick to the 80s selection, pick from the 90s and 2000 onwards is generally a no go. The decline into pornpop is very noticeable so I think it is in the last 10 years that things have got really out of control. Lady GaGa videos are a no no for DS - I just don't see why her showmanship has to mean that in every video she is wearing skimpy underwear just with different and more ridiculous headgear. Elton John does showmanship, ridiculous and entertaining costumes and good songs without needing to strip (perish the thought) as do many many other singer/songwriters - can only think of men though. Funny how it's only the women stripping in videos? I can't think of any music videos with gratuitous male flesh on show.

I have fond memories of dancing every Thursday (?) evening to Top of the Pops in the living room much to my parents' amusement. Couldn't happen now.

I agree with you.
I don't mind sexual content in context. I loathe pornopop when it is just for the sake of it though. Rhianna et al are not doing young womens' self image any good at all in my opinion. Lots of rap artists are just as bad if not worse.
It's not just the lyrics though, it's the videos. Male rap artists surrounded by bikini clad women gyrating and pretending to get off with each other.
I fucking hate it when pop videos promote lesbianism as simply a method to sexually excite other males.

I think that the pop industry have become lazy.

I don't think it's laziness either though, it's purely to market 'music' which IMO without a sex-laden vid to top promote, would fester in the bowels of the industry.

I can't bear the videos. They are far worse than the lyrics.

Having said that when we were on the way home from camping, listening to Radio One because we couldnt' get anything else to work, we must have heard that 'Beb-ay' song by Nicole Schertzinger about a zillion times and I really don't want my 6 year old singing 'put your hands on my body' from the back seat....

I do remember my mother getting into a self-righteous strop over a song called Romeo by Mr Big in the 1970's (any other old gimmers out there remember that one?) "Step back inside me Romeo, she said/Step back inside me, take me to your bed"

Seems almost old-fashionedly romantic nowadays...

DS (age 5) recently found the music channels on FreeSat. I don't bother with them (bit of a radio 4 type myself) and was seriously shocked at how sexual the videos were. It was women in tiny clothes gyrating or over-muscled blokes crotch thrusting and posturing. They're not images that I want my small children exposed to. Or want to watch myself either. We (I) swiftly decamped to something 80's.
