Ian and Mjol-nir??

MsTeak · 16/06/2011 18:45

Naoise is one of those "boys names now turning into girls names" ones. The original (or earliest known usage) is the nephew of King Conchubar and the murdered husband of Deirdre of the Sorrows.

BumWiper · 16/06/2011 18:45

Me-Yol-Nur for the second, unsure of the first.

I'm worn out correcting him at this stage. He was wondering why DD wasnt answering him,FFS she didnt realise he was talking to her.

I get Naaa,Noo,ummmm Mrs XXXXX.

HidinginaHardHat · 16/06/2011 18:51

I could spoil the fun for everyone you know

Some of the spellings seem to have zero correlation to the pronounciation!

BumWiper · 16/06/2011 18:52

Foh-la.

Ok,my baby DD is Sadbh, anyone want to have a go at saying it?

hobbgoblin · 16/06/2011 18:52

Yes, pretty much there...

Ee-no-nee and Myol-neer

I'd have said Foll-uh I think

WriterofDreams · 16/06/2011 18:53

Ugh except those pronunciations are very approximate hardhat. They're pretty much the anglicised versions of the names rather than the Irish versions.

WriterofDreams · 16/06/2011 18:54

I won't do the Irish ones any more it's a bit unfair seeing as I am Irish :)

BumWiper · 16/06/2011 18:54

Irish sounds are different to how it would be pronounced in english.A friend of mine is Dutch,Jerome prounonced Your-omm

WriterofDreams · 16/06/2011 18:55

What language is that hobgoblin?

HidinginaHardHat · 16/06/2011 18:55

Yeah, i've had a look on there for my cousins childrens names (they're Irish living in Ireland) and how they say them and how they are on there don't match, but it's better than having some of the hashed up attempts that you can hear, and avoids unecessary embarassment for people.

HidinginaHardHat · 16/06/2011 18:55

Johan in Swedish is Ewan.

MsTeak · 16/06/2011 18:56

I'm rubbish with Irish names, though I do know the pronunciations of Aine, Niamh and Caitlin at least.

Some of the names on this thread made me do a goldfish impression trying to get my gob round the vowels, completely incorrectly!

pink4ever · 16/06/2011 18:58

My eldest has an irish name-Colm. We pronouce it col-um,is that right?

BumWiper · 16/06/2011 18:59
