I found it a tadge patronising.

You?

peanutdream · 16/06/2011 16:08

bloody hell some of you are just so grumpy! these women are goofing about in those outfits pretending to pump their milk while they are dancing - er not exactly trying to sell sex?! why on earth can't a breastfeeding mother be sexy as hell? oxytocin and all that - released during orgasm and let down too, and birth...

i thought it was funny (if a bit silly) but in a positive way.

peanutdream · 16/06/2011 16:13

but why on earth...

but lets talk about the 'juxtaposition' of burlesque outfits and breastfeeding shall we Hmm - seriously, this country needs to lighten up about the whole bloody thing

i'm with the dude with the cards - he looks like he is having a whale of a time Grin

dollydoeshula · 16/06/2011 16:13

D0gFace - I'm not au fait with forum social etiquettes - i'm likely to misplace one smiley and it'll be mumsnet suicide for me - it's hard enough typing with one hand, holding a baby with the other and stopping mid flow to change a nappy!

BornSticky, I understand it's a small number of individuals being rude and unkind, and yes I expected to be judged in that way due to those reasons, but I always challenge that kind of negativity as I don't think it's healthy. RE your criticisms, I take them on board - hey this project is more of a fanzine than a glossy mag! But, plenty of folk do like it and it makes them smile. My young neice and her friends like it, and they have never given thought to feeding babies, and will not for some time, but if they are required to think about feeding babies - rather than just make an association to the imagery of formula feeding, they will realise breastfeeding is an option too.

Xxxxxkxxxxx · 16/06/2011 16:15

Unfortunately trying to get bf put on telly in programmes such as eastenders corrie etc i imagine is much harder than it sounds, but I agree this would show NORMAL feeding in everyday life. It is a shame that alot of women and especially younger mums go with the majority what there friends are doing and what is also "fashionable" at the time, and unfortunately breastfeeding is not advertised or shown in the public eye enough! This is why this video was made to try and advertise the normality of breastfeeding. If ppl can't see that you need to watch it again!!!! I don't see how this makes anyone feel like it pressures you to bf your child, in the same way I don't watch an advert for formula milk and feel it's making me feel bad for breastfeeding I think it's ppls own insecurities if u feel that way!

Ceec · 16/06/2011 16:16

I thought it was sweet - was expecting full on erotic dancing based on the extreme views above, but it was all quite cute.

And I agree with the sentiment of those involved that have posted here - better to do something lighthearted with a positive spin on breastfeeding if you want to promote it, than to sit on your hands complaining about the power of 'big formula'.

p.s. a lot of people posting here imply/say that women using formula for their babies have generally tried breastfeeding and failed, but actually in the UK many many women don't even try. Not saying this video would change that, just being picky.

DialsMavis · 16/06/2011 16:22

I don't mind it, it has grown on me a lot since yesterday. All the women look like they were having a laugh. At least it isn't worthy or judgy and it shows an element of normality rather than the usual face of BF: enormous boobs fully out on a large women cross legged in baggy cheese cloth tends to be the way the media like to portray it like some wierdy beardy hippy activity.

Ceec, I've been called a lap-dancer over this and had almost forgotten that there is nothing remotely erotic about it myself!

I think the support from posters here is very kind, thank you. There is never going to be an agreement, but I just feel proud to have got together with a group of women who have done something we feel is positive, and I know that positivity is impacting on people who watch the video and like it.

Look, I have even learned how to make a cupcake smiley: [} because everyone likes cupcakes

d0gFace · 16/06/2011 16:37

Yeah Im not exactly sexy or glamorous, so in my mind I cant see it making any difference. If/when im in that position my view might be different though.

Ceec according to the nhs website 78% of women in England start breastfeeding.

dollydoeshula your cupcake looks like a side boob!

BornSicky · 16/06/2011 16:41

if the aim is to normalise breastfeeding, then its not only missed the point, but sailed past it off down a river a of pointy things not touch a single one on the way.

FFS!

normalisation is about making something commonplace and unremarkable, and not about going "ooh! look at the controversial sexy dancing breastfeeding women". it's drawing attention to breastfeeding and aligning the act of breastfeeding with an enjoyment of sexualising ones body.

do you (or anyone who supports this) think that more women would breastfeed if they thought it made them sexy? actually, don't answer that. revoltingly, we're all so used to having to be sexy and making our bodies sexually alluring for men every single day, that it probably would. gutted.

DialsMavis · 16/06/2011 16:43

But how would you make a normal and unremarkable video that people would bother to watch?

Maybe that's why my cupcakes bring all the boys to the yard?

Maybe I have a screw loose, but when a woman is in her nightie , covered in poop and sick and hasn't washed her hair for a week because she is devoted to her baby and caring for the wee one - that's as sexy as hell, but not in the "lads mag" kind of way. Heck, the same applies to men!

BornSicky · 16/06/2011 16:46

dialsmavis you wouldn't make a normal or unremarkable video, but you would or could make a video that made breastfeeding appear normal and unremarkable. it's two different things entirely.

i'm a little alarmed that the Chief Executive of the NCT appears to be in support of this video...

is still my favorite.
peanutdream · 16/06/2011 16:49

'do you (or anyone who supports this) think that more women would breastfeed if they thought it made them sexy? actually, don't answer that. revoltingly, we're all so used to having to be sexy and making our bodies sexually alluring for men every single day, that it probably would. gutted.'

no i don't think more women will breastfeed BECAUSE of this video. more women would breastfeed if they were given effective support and information in the first two weeks specifically and for the whole time generally, by family and the health profession alike.

i think you have missed the point and sailed off down a river of bitterness 'revoltingly' - chill out! Grin. this is about women getting together and dancing in a silly way with breast pumps and having fun and getting people talking and making fun of all the names we have for boobs and celebrating their bodies and expressing themselves. there are some fully clothed women dancing with their babies in the video too and they look like they are having a good time, as are the people in the corsets... it is ONE expression of someone's idea about something. other people could do different videos. there could be lots of ways to celebrate breastfeeding. after all, a video of someone sat on the sofa in their pyjamas eating cake and feeding their baby while watching box sets or tv with their toddler or whatever wouldn't be funny. actually it might be! someone should make a video like that!

thaigreencurry · 16/06/2011 16:50

I've watched it again and I'm embrassed for them. Its truly awful they have completely missed the point. It really is very silly and makes me feel that bfing is something to feel icky about when I'm sure they were trying to promote the opposite. Next time you have any ideas about creating a video please seek advice.

peanutdream · 16/06/2011 16:50

Ah DialsMavis that's lovely!

BornSicky · 16/06/2011 16:51

"Maybe I have a screw loose, but when a woman is in her nightie , covered in poop and sick and hasn't washed her hair for a week because she is devoted to her baby and caring for the wee one - that's as sexy as hell"

i really hope you don't mean sexy. i really hope you mean gorgeous, motherly or even charming, but certainly not sexually provocative, inviting sex, or arousing... because that's what "sexy" means.

can't women have early motherhood as theirs and not feel the need or pressure to be sexy for anyone?

Someone linked to it on here before, I love it Smile

peanutdream · 16/06/2011 16:54

and why can't being a mother be sexy to a father?? inviting - caring for her offspring? an arousing quality in a woman for a man to see - being devoted to his and her child?

i think it would be a GREAT thing if we found this to be sexy, rather than covers of f*ing NUTS
