I have 2 cats and an elderly neighbour. I have noticed that our side passage is littered with cat poo but my young ds told me today that he saw *** (our neighbour) throwing poo over the fence into our garden and that he thought it was disgusting. There are several cats in the area. What do you think about that?

My cat uses the loo. Shame others don't do the same.

Yes I am serious Smile

ggirl · 14/06/2011 09:07

God cat shit really winds me up .
New neighbour of ours has a cat , shits on our garden path.
Dog shit is just as bad ,but at least dogs aren't encouraged (well the majority I know) to shit anywhere they like ,owners unaware of where so unable to clean up after them.
All pet owners should obviously be responsible for their pets shit . I was a responsible dog owner .

Cats on kitchen work surfaces is another bugbear of mine as well ..bleurgh.

MynameisTerces · 14/06/2011 09:09

this is not my cat but here is how

MynameisTerces · 14/06/2011 09:09

It is very easy to train a cat to do this.

ggirl · 14/06/2011 09:17

Wow ..brilliant . YY all cats should shit in the toilet.
Terces- does yours flush?

MynameisTerces · 14/06/2011 09:19

nope hasn't worked that out yet Grin only uses the downstairs loo. He knows the rules, then i give it a wipe around. Love my cat !

MynameisTerces · 14/06/2011 09:21

if you want to try this is how

www.litterkwitter.com/en/index.php don't know if it works on older cats though

MynameisTerces · 14/06/2011 09:25

My neighbour once complained to me about cat poo. I told her mine used the loo and she thought i was just being facetious Grin

FannyFifer · 14/06/2011 09:40

The cats round my way do not bury their shit either, leave it on the grass on the path etc. Disgusting.
My poor dad is driven mad by cats shitting in his garden.

A few years ago there was a big tom cat that kept doing it on his grass, he chased it loads of times and turned the hose on it. He got up one morning and opened the curtains and the fecker was sat on his car roof, when he went out to car later there was a big cat shit right on the bonnet of his car.
We did all laugh, although dad did not find it funny.Grin

It is actually KINDER to slightly contain your cats within your own garden; this keeps them safe from other, bigger, meaner cats, from eating Things Wot They Shouldn't, from traffic, from all sorts. As soon as I can, netting will be going up around my garden, to A) keep BastardCats out, and B), so my cats can go outside without being raped / beaten / harassed.

I'll still keep my litter tray though. I'd clean up after any pet that lives with me. It's just...what you do.

besidemyselfwithfury · 14/06/2011 21:50

totallylovely

Check your facts before you shoot your mouth off - keeping cats contained in decent sized gardens isn't cruel it is actually recommended. www.fabcats.org/owners/fencing/info.html

And you talk about 'scumbags' and 'not nice people' and then say you 'well probably someone I wouldn't piss on if on fire' - let me think...you are referring to people who object to owners allowing their domestic pets to shit in other peoples garden, when this shit can cause miscarriage, blindness and other serious illnesses - and we are not nice!! Take a good hard look in the mirror - what a vile comment.

naturalbaby · 14/06/2011 22:28

cats are independent animals. they have their own territory and take no notice of your ownership or the grass and objects contained within your fence/boundries. there are plenty of reasons wny my cats spend most of their time indoors but the fear of what the neighbours will do if one of them needs the loo and are too far away from their litter tray is not one of them, maybe it should be.

the anti-cat brigade seem to think cat owners are responsible for their cats toilet habits and personalities as much as our children's. I'll have a go at lecturing my 2 on staying in our garden and where they can/can't poo but I suspect they will take no notice, roll over and wait for me to tickle their chin.

stillfrazzled · 14/06/2011 22:33

I quite like cats. But could one of the apologists insisting that they always bury their shit come and explain that to the fecker that took a dump on my son's slide? He was heading for it when I noticed. Ugh.

DontGoCurly · 14/06/2011 23:20

I'm neither a cat-owner (can't be bothered with the mess) nor a cat-opposer, so I reckon I'm neutral.

If I had the chance to own cats and keep them I'd try my best to contain their shit. If I failed, I'd have the decency to be ashamed. I love animals but I understand keeping them is a privelege not a right.

Simple really! Grin

TotallyLovely · 15/06/2011 10:12

besidemyselfwithfury I don't recall ever saying I thought it was cruel! I think it is unrealistic though, jumping over fences isn't the only way cats get in and out of gardens, they can climb up trees, 1st floor extensions and trellis. A weird fence thing isn't going to stop them if they want to get out, not a chance in hell. I have even seen them climbing up rose bushes with all those thorns and up onto the top of an open back door to get up where they want to be!

I stand by what I said that if someone hates animals so much to the point where they say they will poison them/kick the shit out of them (as has been said on this thread) then they are not a nice person and so not someone who I would care about. I usually find that people who dislike animals are very cold, unemotional, unempathetic people, just my observation. I tend not to like people without empathy.

As for toxoplasmosis, are you aware that it is also carried by birds and other animals? It's not just cats by any means. Are you going to try to keep birds out of your garden as well? You are also much more likely to catch it from eating raw, undercooked or cured meat than from a cat. (That is a fact)

There is also something called Toxicara which also causes blindness and can affect internal organs. That is spread by dogs, cats and foxes, so I guess you have better find a fence that will keep foxes out (good luck with that).

mummylin2495 · 15/06/2011 12:41

As i have already said on this thread most of us dont dislike cats ,but we hate cat shit in our gardens with a vengeance.can you not see how horrible this is for non cat owners ? And you also lumped all of us together and called us scumbags because we dared to say we dont like cats shitting in our gardens ! You are bloody rude.

mummylin2495 · 15/06/2011 12:44

Are you posting all your ridiculous posts just to antagonise everyone ?

EldonAve · 15/06/2011 14:05

stillfrazzled - did you see the cat do it?

stillfrazzled · 15/06/2011 14:26

Eldon, I must admit I did not. But given that our only next door neighbours have a cat and therefore wouldn't be flinging poo (and in any case it was clearly undisturbed since deposit, IYSWIM) I think I'm justified in assuming that's how it got there.

There might be a phantom (and very careful) poo-depositor who's trying to give the neighbourhood felines a bad name, but - much as I enjoy a good conspiracy theory - that does seem to be taking it a bit far Grin.

naturalbaby · 15/06/2011 14:52

i have cats, my neighbours cats shit in my garden and spray on the front door. i can't change my neighbour, her cats or their nasty habits but i can deal with the problem on my property appropriately.

non cat owners don't have a right to rant and rave about cat shit just because they don't have cats, and expect all cat owners to have a moral obligation to follow their cats around all day and night checking they don't shit/wee somewhere that may offend someone.

EldonAve · 15/06/2011 15:17

I think the cats are taking a lot of shit for other animals
deer, hedgehogs, foxes....

MynameisTerces · 15/06/2011 15:37

Yes, I agree there are other animals pooing in gardens and they get the blame. Lots of cats are using the loo these days, really Grin I have just had a new collar disc engraved for my cat. It says I do not mess in your garden I do mine at home. I was worried someone might hurt him after I had seen this thread.

TotallyLovely · 16/06/2011 09:35

besidemyselfwithfury It just occured to me last night that the fence you posted has a rather serious flaw. If the overhanging bit isn't put on the other side of the fence as well (for which you would need all your neighbours permissions) you are going to end up with a situation where cats can get into your garden but can't get out again!

kelfergus · 29/07/2011 10:34

the first i knew that my cat was supposedly 'going' in a neighbour's garden was when they threw the stuff back over the wall all over the SHARED private lane (these neighbours don't share it themselves but we do with our two other houses - one of whom owns the land)
they didn't want a discussion - we would have quite willingly discussed it - they wanted an argument, so i called the police.
It has happened again, and again i have called the police and this time told the owner of the lane/land who has had to go over there and then got into an argument himself and threatened to call the police.
this is ridiculous! they have NO PROOF that it is my cat - there are MANY cats in this small area. they just keep saying "we've lived here for 44 years and no one is going to tell me what i can and can't do..." he has taken to demanding that my husband reverses all the way down the lane onto the main road if he wants to come out and he is generally being a pain.
The biggest problem is that they're very old (mid to late 80's) and as such they have now got their grandson involved (he knocked on next door but thankfully he was out!!)
I DO NOT reward abusive and threatening behaviour - i would have quite happily tried to discuss it with them but they started a shit-slinging war LITERALLY!! their other elderly neighbour on the other side of them, has taken to bagging it up and putting it next to our bin now too - she said the police told her to...first i've heard of it, he never mentioned it to me when he called.
my next stop is a solicitor.
sorry for the essay!! it is REALLy getting me down and i'm worried cuz they've threatened the cats too...rant over! :(

tulipgrower · 29/07/2011 13:16

Can't cats straying where they shouldn't just be taken to a shelter/lost cats home? Then they could be rehomed where they are welcome and where there is enough space. Then there would be less poo-wars. Grin It's not really fair on cats and humans alike to keep them confined to such minute spaces/territories.
