Shocked with the blatant racism on Mumnet lately

Name changed for this

Of late I've been come so shocked at the bullying and racism on this site.
Latest two that have since been deleted taking the piss out of gypsies.
So what if a user is either a gypsy, Jewish, asian it doesn't give you the right to belittle. I read the posts lastnight regarding one user and about her being a gypsy. It's attitudes like this that starts persecution. The nazis did this they persecuted millions of jews, handicapped, gypsies. I am utterly shocked and disaapointed at how you so called adults act it's nothing sort of playground bullying. Who on earth would want to join here with that attitude??????

Yes! I learned that version!

SuePurblybilt · 11/06/2011 20:21

Chickens, are you implying that all people wearing Andrea Corr's trousers and living in council houses have stinky wind? Because I so live in a council house and I have never farted. Cannot believe anyone would say such gassist comments in this day and age.

BelleDameSansMerci · 11/06/2011 20:22

Wish I had learned that version then I wouldn't be wondering what "cor blimey trousers" are (although I suspect they're just trousers that are so bad one exclaims "Cor! Blimey..." in shocked tones at the sight of them).

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 11/06/2011 20:23

I might revive the cat paralysingly farting dustman

I don't care if people jump on me, but the OP does have a slight point. The OP of the thread she is referring too was clearly a dickhead, but that had nothing to do with the fact she was a gypsy, but some posters did make negative generalisations about her culture (they dress all their kids like strippers, they oppress their women etc), but then again the OP also made sweeping generalisations about her own culture (they look after their elderly/kids properly), and then about the British population in general (they don't and put their kids in day orphanages/grannies in homes etc).

I can understand why many have become a bit defensive as it is not nice to be called a racist and I'm sure most of the posters aren't, but one must admit that if such stereotypes about other cultures, similar to those on that thread had been brought up, there would have been an even stronger backlash.

I concede that the OP of this thread does have a slight point, but the OP of the thread she's on about was an idiot, and very intolerant herself, and I don't think anyone attacked her just because of her culture, but because she used her culture as and excuse to be appallingly intolerant of how other people choose to parent their children.

confuddledDOTcom · 11/06/2011 20:35

Glad someone else picked up on handicap! I was wondering if it was just me.

I don't think cor blimey trousers are anything in particular just a description of the old man's trousers - dirty and smelly I should imagine the song is getting at.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 11/06/2011 20:36

And I know I have used the term "gypsy" but the OP of teh other thread referred to herself as Romany Gypsy so I assume she wouldn't find it offensive.

BitOfFun · 11/06/2011 20:40

Nobody who made any stereotyped assumptions was around to get defensive at being called racist. That was left to people who joined the thread later on when it had been diverted into general daftness and a sing-song. They did not appreciate being called racist because they, er, weren't.

NorthernGobshite · 11/06/2011 20:47

Wow, is this a thread of a thread of a thread of a thread....I can't believe this is still rumbling on....[potters off to talk about ginger hair and anal sex emoticom]

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 11/06/2011 20:50

There were some people on there who did throw those stereotypes around though, that's my point. So in that sense the OP does have a point, and obviously she is not referring to those who were having a playful sing song. Though I don't think there was any blatant hateful racism going on. Just a backlash about the OP using her culture as an excuse to slag off anyone who chose to send their children to nursery.

LadyBeagleEyes · 11/06/2011 20:54

How many threads about threads about threads have been created now I wonder.
I bet Beesimo is sitting in't farmhouse kitchen chuckling to herself over all the attention.

Blatherskite · 11/06/2011 20:58

I did wonder last night if Beesimo had started them all in some strange attempt to take over MN by being the focus of every active thread Hmm

NormanTebbit · 11/06/2011 20:59

I think people should be able to say what they damn well like. If you don't like it, challenge them. And don't namechange. Have the courage of your convictions.

BumWiper · 11/06/2011 21:03

The Roma and Travellers are different. It was Travellers that channel4 filmed.

The Roma are descendant from India.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 11/06/2011 21:08

Just curious, why do people get so narked about threads about threads? Is it because it is difficult for new-comers to know what's being spoken about? or is it because individual OPs can end up filling the boards with numerous different threads? Not trying to be confrontational or anything just genuinely intrigued as I have seen them annoying people before and wondered...

And also what is wrong with name-changing? The whole point of these forums is that most users are pretty much anonymous, otherwise we all wouldn't bother with nicknames and just use our real names, surely?

Again not trying to be contrary, just wondering...

HowlingBitch · 11/06/2011 21:08

Cor blimey trousers

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 11/06/2011 21:19

Eek! Those trousers! He looks like he has pooed his pants!

BelleDameSansMerci · 11/06/2011 21:23

I'm never asking about cor blimey trousers again.

crazycat304 · 11/06/2011 21:25

I agree. I was upset that a post was put up in the meet ups section asking for an asian mums get together in north london. Is that the sort of racism your talking about?

I hid that ages ago, Lenin. Hard to believe some people can be that stupid, really.

BitOfFun · 11/06/2011 21:30

In fact, stupid isn't quite the right word. Obtuse.
