Ok silly because I know its not quite a aibu

But thinking today about jobs that I am fascinated with , like personal shopper, and wondered what people on here do and if there is a big range of interesting careers. Ive read previously there are actors and writers on here, what other things? and is anyone a personal shopper?Do people actually use them?

I got into science/engineering late though.

I remember complaining to my physics teacher 'when the bloody hell will I ever need to know about how lasers work for god sake'

Now I know. And wish I paid more attention rather than covering my pencil case with tippex.

motherinferior · 07/06/2011 22:45

I am a journalist.

LeChatRouge · 07/06/2011 22:45

Oh - I LOVE maps, it just gets better! If I am waiting in the car for any reason, I always look at the road map book, I especially like contours.

I was wondering about the uncertainty of not selling a painting for a while.....
have you ever done illustrating for kids books or anything...? Did you study art at uni?

AnnieLobeseder · 07/06/2011 22:46

Can I quote that at my first year viva panel in a few weeks please? Grin

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 22:46

Do any of the scientists on here work for the research councils out of nosy interest.

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 22:47

I also love maps. I could gaze at maps of obscure areas for ages.

AnnieLobeseder · 07/06/2011 22:47

I work for (well, am funded by) the BBSRC.

sundew · 07/06/2011 22:47

No but I have a colleague who used to work at the Wellcome - why?

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 22:50

Oh, just out of interest, I work for STFC split with SSC.

I have only worked there for a couple of months (spent whole career in private industry) and love it to death.

sundew · 07/06/2011 22:53

There are so many jobs on this list that I'd love to try out - maybe we should do a MumsNet job swap day?!!

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 07/06/2011 22:53

I love maps too!

can we start a Maps section in MN Grin

EnnuiGo · 07/06/2011 22:54

oooh no not lovely detailed maps - that is a really difficult job - must take a lot of training (although i'm assuming they do alot with computers now) - sadly i meant the sort of routes you get on walks - i draw the views, flowers, wildlife and landmarks along the way. That is my day to day sort of stuff.

But it is great to sell a painting in a gallery or get a place or win a competition. That's what i really love.

I actually studied illustration rather than fine art - but my work is more painterly than illustrative. I do wonder how different life could have been if i had studied Fine Art rather than go for something a bit more stable....

....but i do feel embarrassed talking about me (in four paragraphs no less!) compared to what some women do for a living on here....

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 22:55

I love old maps, looking at a medieval map of the UK and working out how the bloody hell they drew it.

And then looking at a map of Kamchatka in Russia and planning a fantasy trip there.

Julesnobrain · 07/06/2011 22:55

I am an IT services and consulting new business salesperson specializing in banking and capital markets. V interesting job, I get to meet loads of people and talk lots :)

MissMarjoribanks · 07/06/2011 22:56

I love maps too!

And I am the proud owner of a scale rule. It is Toblerone shaped and has 12 different scales on it.

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 22:58

I coudln't do any of the jobs on here:

SAHM - children run away screaming from the scary lady
shoe buyer - would only buy high heels out of principle
jewellery maker - pearls dropped everywhere, bits of silver flicked across the room
Vet - scared of blood and barking dogs
Artist - can't draw, can't paint
Journalist - can't string a sentence together, evidently

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 07/06/2011 23:00

getorf

me too! have you visited the Mappamundi in Hereford? amazing
DD1 studied medieval maps as part of her history degree and I loved listening to her explanations of their origins and purpose. It's all to do with landmarks apparently, a bit like how we'd draw a map to the local supermarket

foolserrand · 07/06/2011 23:01

I'm a mad scientist. Teach children science is fun.

ifancyashandy · 07/06/2011 23:02

TV Producer. Mainly live telly.
Love it (apart from the fact I've only just got in from work and today isn't my busy day).

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 07/06/2011 23:02

meant to add with Jerusalem at the centre not Sainsburys

SixtyFootDoll · 07/06/2011 23:03

I am a custody sgt in a large and very busy Police Station.
Never a dull moment.

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 23:04

iwastoo I would love to know, it sounds about right re landmarks. Looking at the old maps they managed to get it so accurate.

I feel the same about cathedrals - just in awe at the amazing brilliance.

Grockle · 07/06/2011 23:04

I'm a fellow map-lover Grin

What a great thread. I'm fascinated.

I work with severely autistic children and I love it. I used to work with bats - rehabilitating sick & injured one for release and hand-rearing baby bats too.

vintageteacups · 07/06/2011 23:07

Until I had the kids, I worked for DEFRA as an admin officer for the State Vet Service.

Now, I'm a doula but currently not working and in a couple of years time I'll be doing a midwifery degree.

It's so cool what jobs people do. I noticed just how many people on here are in a caring profession - lovely Smile

Mytholmroyd · 07/06/2011 23:07

I've used the Xmas synchrotron in Grenoble GetOrf - did you help build that? Some seriously clever scientists work there - it was like another world - felt like an imposter and very out of my depth! But I got free food for the week Grin
