Ok silly because I know its not quite a aibu

But thinking today about jobs that I am fascinated with , like personal shopper, and wondered what people on here do and if there is a big range of interesting careers. Ive read previously there are actors and writers on here, what other things? and is anyone a personal shopper?Do people actually use them?

I am a portage home visitor.

I visit families with children who have disabilities. I go once a week for a set period and work with the parents/carers to devise play activities to encourage development. The parents do all the work, I just help them to work out what to do.

I work with children with severe and complex disabilities and also those with milder delays. (and all points inbetween).

The children are aged from around 8 mths to 4 years.

I think its the fabbiest job ever and could only be improved if I got to do my visits on a pony Grin

Kbear · 07/06/2011 22:00

I create family trees and make gluten free brownies but not on the same day!

PumpkinBones · 07/06/2011 22:00

Rainydaze I meant to say, are you the same as in fundraiser, wildlife or both? I haven't met many fundraisers on MN Smile

GreenTeapot · 07/06/2011 22:03

May I point out that Norks is an extremely talented lady and I can attest to the high quality of her craftwomanship :)

I am a vet - well, I am on day 2 of being a vet again after ML. It's not as glamorous or financially rewarding as people assume Hmm but I do love the variety and the challenges, and the people too :)

CaveMum · 07/06/2011 22:04

My current job involves liasing with owners/breeders/trainers of racehorses, getting them registered to race, compiling statistics of the number of horses being bred, etc.

My previous 2 jobs were "hands on" on a racehorse stud. I looked after the pregnant mares, the foals and yearlings. Took mares to be covered (mated with the stallion) and assisted in the mares giving birth.

I was very lucky to be in contact with some of the best racehorses of recent years - literally worth millions of pounds.

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 22:07

Isn't there such a variety on here - it's great to see so many people who love their jobs.

I always think my job must sound so boring and geeky to others, but I love it and could bore for england on the subject!

MayDayChild · 07/06/2011 22:08

Hmmm I have one of those 'glamorous' jobs at a popular magazine. It's bloomin' hard work for very little financial reward.
Do I love it?
I did moreso before becoming a mum. It's still great but far less important to me these days

Selks · 07/06/2011 22:08

I work with homeless and self harming young people. Love it.

MayDayChild · 07/06/2011 22:10

Ooh greenteapot X posted, but it's my 2nd day back too!!

WillieWaggledagger · 07/06/2011 22:11

Yes Getorf - dp is a teacher and he can't work out what I do all day (i write reports, analyse stuff, plan strategy, negotiate). he does aspects of these things too of course but in an area that more people understand because they went to school

NorksAreMessy · 07/06/2011 22:12

greenteapot hello and thank you
< waves back, twirls and falls over after too much gin>
You are a VET? Who'd a thunk it?

Really interesting reading/posters.

I know you're all mums as well, but being a mum is the thing I've found I can do to be productive/useful in life (and survive).

I'm pleased to say 'I'm a mum as a job' (with no judgement on what anyone else does - no, I mean that).

hatwoman · 07/06/2011 22:14

I worked for many years with human rights organisations - travelled to Yemen, Iraq, the Philippines. I now work as a consultant doing policy, legal and research work for NGOs, govt bodies, think tanks and universities.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 07/06/2011 22:15

I am a journalist.

OldMacEIEIO · 07/06/2011 22:16

When you go into the bank (br**ys), and the cashier looks at the screen to tell how rich you are (or not, as the case may be), thats my system they are using. another software developer here

springbokscantjump · 07/06/2011 22:18

Ooh hatwoman that sounds like it would be really emotionally draining.

I should bookmark threads like this to show doubters of how wide a community MN is. Plus give my Dd (if I have one) ideas for careers!

MissMarjoribanks · 07/06/2011 22:18

I am a development control manager for the Council. I manage a team of planners who process planning applications for everything between a conservatory to thousands of square metres of commercial floorspace. I also manage conservation and enforcement.

I decide whether my officers' recommendations for decisions on planning applications are correct and issue decisions. I attend Planning Committee and act as expert advice to councillors. I negotiate with architects and developers and respond to complaints. I help to manage the budget and deal with HR issues. I sometimes even get to go out on site.

I absolutely love it. There is so much variety and I am constantly busy. It can be exhausting - I got in at 7.30 this morning and left the town hall after committee at 9pm, but generally it's flexible and a great deal of fun.

GreenTeapot · 07/06/2011 22:19

Oh dear, do I not seem vet-like? I suppose you can't see the fleece and the wellies!

What a fab variety of occupations, no wonder this place has the answer to anything!

NorksAreMessy · 07/06/2011 22:19

AIBU to be delighted that this thread is helping me to see you all more three dimensionally?
Now I know that GetOrf is a genius geek, and greenteapot is a vet and Mrs DeVere does sucha n amazing and valuable and astounding job

Before this thread, for which, thanks MrsK, you were NNs that I enjoyed reading, or mostly agreed with, or looked forward to, but now you all seem more like, you know, ummm, errr, well, real people!

Do our jobs make us more real? Discuss

thefirstMrsDeVere · 07/06/2011 22:20

korma I used to be a veterinary nurse!

blueshoes · 07/06/2011 22:21

I love my job. I review all new work that the law firm I work for takes on to ensure compliance with legal, commercial and ethical requirements. It gives me a window into the key transactions in the City and worldwide in almost every sector. It is fast paced, high pressured and high profile with the management. Great fun.

Anything I read in the FT is potentially relevant to what I do.

NorksAreMessy · 07/06/2011 22:24

greenteapot I am DELIGHTED you are a vet.
Some of my best income has been spent with various vets, and I don't begrudge a single penny of it :) just, I have only known you as a tiny bit stressed not-really-very-good-at-being-a-self-centred-Bridezilla!
