Ok silly because I know its not quite a aibu

But thinking today about jobs that I am fascinated with , like personal shopper, and wondered what people on here do and if there is a big range of interesting careers. Ive read previously there are actors and writers on here, what other things? and is anyone a personal shopper?Do people actually use them?

I am a fashion editor on a magazine - I love it and can't wait to go to work in the mornings Grin

thefirstMrsDeVere · 07/06/2011 22:25

I did love it.

I dont do it anymore because I couldnt afford to. I worked for the RSPCA in the 80s. Really really badly paid and very long hours. No way of progressing and no maternity benefits. Absolutely no rights to part time working etc.

RSPCA was a really crap employer.

But I did love it.

Rainydaze · 07/06/2011 22:27

Pumpkinbones - both. Fundraiser for a wildlife charity.

AnnieLobeseder · 07/06/2011 22:30

Well, as long as we find out our careers interesting! If we all found the same ones interesting, jobs would be hard to come by and very little would get done.

I'm a microbiologist specialising in veterinary virology.

InWithTheITCrowd · 07/06/2011 22:30

I am the Community Arts Manager for 16 schools. I LOVE my job. I get to work within the Arts with practitioners and workshop leaders, and I get to work with some amazing students.
Part of my job is organising/directing school plays, performances and conferences, and then watching them! I also enable my students to exhibit art work in galleries.
I feel very lucky

methodsandmaterials · 07/06/2011 22:31

I'm a science writer. I love it.

CurrySpice · 07/06/2011 22:32

stoptalking you have my dream job. I hate you Wink

GreenTeapot · 07/06/2011 22:33

I fervently hope that I am a better vet than I am a bridezilla!

For some reason I expected more writers/journalists/fashiony types but the place is actually teeming with scientists. Great to see women in science :)

Wilts · 07/06/2011 22:33

I'm a social worker - today I love it, yesterday I was in tears over it!

There is never a dull day in my job that's for sure.

LeChatRouge · 07/06/2011 22:34

I am a Shoe Buyer for a global brand. I oversee the selection of styles that go into the collection each season. I get to travel a lot shopping for shoes and to get inspiration for upcoming collections. Sounds like a dream job, but is very high pressured and hard work, huge responsibility to achieve and deliver.

Kewcumber · 07/06/2011 22:34

I'm an accountant a trapeze artist

GreenTeapot · 07/06/2011 22:35

Ooh Annie, can you be more specific? Do you work in research?

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 07/06/2011 22:36

I sort out care for elderly people, advise their families and love the variety, but not so sure I love the paperwork!
used to be a CAB volunteer advisor, a SAHM and many moons ago a buyer for a large supermarket.
(much prefer people to pork pies and pasta!)

very interesting thread btw OP

EnnuiGo · 07/06/2011 22:36

I'm an Artist. I paint pictures that sell (sometimes Grin) in galleries...

LeChatRouge · 07/06/2011 22:38

Now that EnnuiGo is my dream job!

NorksAreMessy · 07/06/2011 22:38

greenteapot you really are a bit of a rubbish bridezilla, you keep thinking of other people.

Great to see so much variety. I must admit that I didn't know that some of these jobs existed.
My DD's headmistress said at speech day 'some of you will be going into careers that don't yet exist'. Good one, eh?

AnnieLobeseder · 07/06/2011 22:38

Yes, GreenTeapot. Can't be too specific though, but I work for one of the research institutes.

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 22:38

methods I had assumed you were a medical doctor for some reason. You must be like one of those clever types who so impress me in the research council.

sundew · 07/06/2011 22:39

This is a fab thread - I work in the NHS managing a portfolio of clinical research studies into lung cancer. I love it - no 2 days are the same (but would be immensely happier if my boss left!)

fruitshootsandheaves · 07/06/2011 22:39

If I ever get a job based however loosely on the degree i have just finished i will be very happy.

AnnieLobeseder · 07/06/2011 22:40

Another one very pleased to see so many scientists here!

SueTheSlut11 · 07/06/2011 22:40

I work at Maccy's. It's sort of ok.

EnnuiGo · 07/06/2011 22:41

LeChat - it's a bit hit and miss. I illustrate boring stuff like maps / walks for bread and butter....

GetOrf · 07/06/2011 22:42

I love the physicists I work with - I have 2 degrees in engineering but they completely outclass me in intellect and sheer brainpower. Makes me feel very inadequate.

I go and look at the particle accelerators and feel so proud to have a tiny part in their creation.

GreenTeapot · 07/06/2011 22:43

Keep up the good work Annie - I did a teensy bit of virus research years ago and it's absolutely fascinating, not to mention the implications for human health. I wasn't clever enough to be of much use so I am in awe of all you wonderful minds who keep us moving forward :)
