to find some modern aspects of feminism patronising to women?

I say "modern aspects" as i am more than aware that historical feminist activism has led to my being able to work in a professional job, has given me choices, has improved the general quality of life for women since etc etc.

An example of what i find patronising to the extreme is the recent protest by feminist groups at the opening of the Playboy Club in London.

wild haired, wild eyed women waved placards and protesting about how playboy exploit women, how evil men were manipulating women and that essentially, women who worked within such industries needed to be saved.

how can these women think that they need to save other women, who are simply exercising their right to make independent choice regarding how they make a living?

these women will deny / ignore the fact that some women working in such an industry (in all its guises) CHOOSE to earn a living that way. they earn a good wage, shock horror, they may even ENJOY it!

i find it so patronising. Intensely.

as i said above, i work in a professional career. i have no issues with strip clubs, lap dancing bars, playboy etc. i have accompanied my husband to such clubs on occasion. those women if anything, are taking advantage of the men who sit and dribble at them. the women have the last laugh with the money they make which is undoubtedly higher than the national minimum wage. would a feminist seek to tell me i am wrong??

@Dittany I think I expressed myself badly. I don't think feminists tell people what to do either. I think feminism questions the way society and culture (and individual people along the way) have told men and women how to behave. It questions all the values and ideas that a patriarchal society considers normal and natural and shows that they are neither and need to be radically changed. It is -for me- the antithesis of telling people what to think. Rather it is the challenge to think outside the box, to not let other people think for you or accepted without question the ?norms? of society.
And sorry I have taken so long to reply. Herein lies the reason why I lurk but rarely post. I am reading while you are all asleep and vice versa. This thread has moved on and I'm still digesting yesterday's arguments.

glitterkitten - I know you're no longer posting to this thread, but hopefully you're still reading it.

Are you able to acknowledge that while some (a tiny minority) of women choose to enter the sex industry, vast swathes do not?

Do you now have a better understanding of the bigger picture, thanks to this thread? There were plenty of calm, measured intelligent posters - some feminists, some perhaps not - who sought to explain that you are wrong. But something tells me that you had no intention of ever being persuaded from your stance... :(

Some people don't admit that they're wrong even if they know it - feels too much like losing face - and that matters more. Sad
