There are people here who will get sexually excited by it, I'm warning you.
They'll think the people deserve it.

fairydoll · 31/05/2011 19:39

Glitter- what????

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 19:41

Don't worry. It's another thread.

freeloader · 31/05/2011 19:47

OMG scousy(gabby) and glitter on the same thread

ScousyFogarty · 31/05/2011 19:51

Why not go on a non serious thread if you are incapable of being serious....that would at least be logical.

Mabelface · 31/05/2011 19:54

Having worked for a whole week in the care industry looking after adults with learning difficulties, the ill treatment doesn't surprise me. I left because of the staff I worked with. The majority weren't nice.

Nik, really? Point me to that thread (I have triplets - you know me elsewhere ;o))

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 19:57

It's the disability benefits thread here.... there are posters here screeching about sense of entitlement, selfishness yadda yadda with zero empathy.

They'll be saying these people shouldn't be getting help anyway, and they should be grateful. You see.

Mabelface · 31/05/2011 20:00

Right!

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 20:03

But yeah, I used to be a home carer (in the days long before I was a despicable benefits scrounger, when I was a student) and I used to treat my clients as I would expect to be treated myself. I do know though due to the families talking to me that wasn't always the case. Some clients had bruises where they'd been roughly handled.

ScousyFogarty · 31/05/2011 20:03

Lizzy yours is a relevANT POST....BUT A LITTLE DEPRESSING, THOUGH NOT REALLY SUPRISING

OP posts:
Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 20:05

That wasn't the only thing I noticed, various things affecting client dignity. It's low paid, it's hard work and unfortunately sometimes that attracts the wrong kind of applicant.

Mabelface · 31/05/2011 20:09

The low pay is the key here. Minimum wage does not encourage workers of a higher calibre to apply. I did domiciliary care, and one worker used to take the service users for a regular 5 minute walk just to have a fag. She also meal planned with chips every single night. The main one I worked with was a bully, and hated that I stood up to her.

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 20:10

I don't know if they take clients shopping nowadays but I did know of one that would chuck her own stuff in with the clients.... the client would pay for the carer's bits and pieces completely oblivious....

Mabelface · 31/05/2011 20:13

Yes, they do. Receipts etc had to be handed over as they'd had service users fleeced by someone not that long before I worked there. He's recently been prosecuted.

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 20:14

Hmm see for some reason this particular carer always 'lost' the receipts.

Mabelface · 31/05/2011 20:15

They should have been sacked.

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 20:17

Thing is though it was a long time ago, not like now when there are plenty looking for work.
With no evidence they couldn't sack her. Open secret though.

I'd also do calls and find that the 'housework call' (that's how long ago it was) had made zero difference to the cleanliness of the house... funny that Hmm anyone would think the carer hadn't bothered.

OldMacEIEIO · 31/05/2011 20:18

here we go.
millions of peep s get mistreated and battered.

but everyone on MN is a saint

maybe every employer in the universe should recruit here

Mabelface · 31/05/2011 20:20

OldMac, I'm not a bloody saint, of course not! But I did believe in treating the service users with dignity and honesty, ensuring that they were safe and comfortable within their home environment.

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 20:21

Too right. One day I may need that kind of care, they are human beings with feelings.

OldMacEIEIO · 31/05/2011 20:21

Santimonious claptrap and thats my point.

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 20:22

Ok so maybe I should make stuff up about beating them upside the head then, would that be acceptable Hmm

PinotGrigiosKittens · 31/05/2011 20:23

It's a hugely undervalued vocation, sadly.

Mabelface · 31/05/2011 20:24

Why is that sanctimonious claptrap?
