QuoththeRaven · 31/05/2011 21:43

i have sky+ is there a bbc+1 channel. have missed this and would like to see it (like not the best word but i wanted to)

giraffesCantZumba · 31/05/2011 21:46

Fucking hell :(

LynetteScavo · 31/05/2011 21:48

I had to turn over. It was too distressing to watch.

The debate is how can we make sure this doesn't happen. What procedures are in place to make sure people are well treated in care homes?

ginmakesitallok · 31/05/2011 21:49

You know something - maybe everyone on this thread who is shocked by this programme and who wants to change the system should go and volunteer at their local care home? Do something practical and helpful??

likingthespring · 31/05/2011 21:51

I had to turn it over too. Oh dear God. No excuses for this sickening abuse. I hope these people are prosecuted.

LynetteScavo · 31/05/2011 21:52

My mother volunteers at her local old peoples home. She had heard dementia care there wasn't very good, and wanted to see it improved before she moves in. (She doesn't have dementia, but thinks it's good to plan ahead)

keepingupwiththejoneses · 31/05/2011 21:53

BBC Iplayer

giraffesCantZumba · 31/05/2011 21:55

I wish I had time to volunteer but not possible. Its just so so awful this should not be happening!

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 22:00

gin I would do, but I have three kids myself who have disabilities and i'm up to my neck

I've watched it and I've vomited, literally.... one day one of my children may need this kind of care (not while there is breath in mine & DH's body but that won't always be the case)

griphook · 31/05/2011 22:05

yes it is bad pay and it shouldn't be. BUT being low pay is not an excuse for being a fucking monster. ffs being pay a low wage is not a reason to abuse someone

Glitterknickaz · 31/05/2011 22:07

my comments, griphook, were made recounting my experiences as a home carer for the elderly - I wasn't clear that the subject was learning disability residential care

giraffesCantZumba · 31/05/2011 22:07

This is horrific

NulliusInVerba · 31/05/2011 22:12

George Bush had to explain away behaviour like that in guantanamo fucking bay.

How , in Britain, are we allowing this to happen to the most vulnerable?? Angry

As usual, lessons will be learned, it was a misjudgement blah blah blah.....

DialsMavis · 31/05/2011 22:15

I can't watch this, I had to hold my whimpering, shaking 98 year old grandma yesterday while yet another sedative injection took hold then I had to leave her behind and come home Sad Sad Sad. She is being sedated and given IV morphine as she has become increasingly distressed whenever awake. I queried how she can be given enough fluids if she is kept like this and I was told "it is the kindest way to help her drift away". But she has held on for 10 days and now looks like a picture of someone in a concentration camp. Can anyone tell me if this is normal practice?

smudgethepuppydog · 31/05/2011 22:17

How could it be reported to the bosses and to CQC yet no-one did a thing about it until a television crew intervened.

bbbbob · 31/05/2011 22:18

I had to turn off half way through. I was in tears.
I have been on another thread today saying my life lacked direction, and I was bored. I'm going to try and volunteer at a local care home. Thats my goal for tomorrow. I am in bits after watching just half that programme.

MotherMucca · 31/05/2011 22:22

Shamelessly C&P'ed my post from the other thread:

Aaarrrggghhhh! My blood temperature rose considerably, watching that.

I have been saying for years that the profile for support workers needs to be improved. It IS NOT, and should not be viewed as a 'last resort' employment option.

Support Workers should be registered with the General Social Care Council (I know this has been on the cards); ETA: in the recruitment of workers

Personality and intelligence tests should be implemented (tongue semi in cheek);

Protection of Vulnerable Adults training should be delivered frequently;

Better training needed for support workers;

I'm not sure that the private sector should deliver care to vulnerable people: can profiteering and providing high quality care really co-exist?

These idiotic cunts are not representative of support workers universally. I am proud to say that I view my work with respect and consideration.

Fuckwits, the lot of them.

I hope the CQC get the book thrown at them.

MotherMucca · 31/05/2011 22:23

Fucks sake, the ETA should be after the personality and intelligence tests

Cheeruploveitmightneverhappen · 31/05/2011 22:25

DialsMavis: this sounds like the Liverpool Care Pathway. Yes it is common practice after treatment is withdrawn and the patient moves onto End of Life care

KidderminsterKate · 31/05/2011 22:25

is it just me wondering how the bbc journalist could have stood and observed this for 5weeks? I imagine he had enough footage within the first few days if not day 1. Why leave it weeks and just stand their for a TV programme?

Should have given footage to cqc immediately (and kicked their arses into gear) and raised with the local safeguarding vulnerable adults team. Not stand their watching, observing, not even intervening.

tomhardyismydh · 31/05/2011 22:26

I dont think these particular carers are on low pay, £16,000 is not low pay. I was on 20,000+ as an unqualified care worker I dont think that is low at all. some are on a very low wage I know but not most care workers.

why does there need to be a debate, threads and forums that highlite this is something surely, how many people may not have known about this programme with out this thread. that surely was ops intention, not to change the care system in one mn thread. but to bring it to our attention.

many people watching, disgusted, commenting have a vested interest in their caring role to family members or own profession and job why should they volunteer, they are doing enough.

beesimo · 31/05/2011 22:27

Just to let you know according to BBc news approx 5 mins ago arrest warrants have just been served on 5 members of staff from the home.

I hope when they got the knock on the door they shit themselves!

keepingupwiththejoneses · 31/05/2011 22:31

I not only care for my ds, I volunteer with 2 separate places to support parents of disabled children.
Funny how the only other volunteers are also carers Hmm

giraffesCantZumba · 31/05/2011 22:33

Keepingupwithjones whats that supposed to mean? How can everyone volunteer everywhere? I am a volunteer counsellor and at a childrens hospice, and have a full time job.

DialsMavis · 31/05/2011 22:37

Thank you Smile Sad
