I don' think I am. Wedding dress etiquette for guests

I am about 4.5m pregnant, I have 4 weddings this summer. I have seen a dress I am going to buy when I get paid, and wear it to all 4 weddings. It will see me through till late summer when I will be BIG.

I have described said dress to close girlfriends to get their opinions. All sound favourable

One of my good mates (one who knows about the dress) tells me she has bought a dress, she is over at mine, we look. Oooh ahh, it is very pretty. then we look at the one I am planning on buying. Mate is all stressed as it is similar to the one she has. similar colour/cut. One has sleeves one doesn't, one will have a heavily pregnant me in it, the other a size 6 hottie. I am non plussed. Friend starts asking me, well are you going to still buy it/wear it?It is really very similar isn't it? We are both going to 2 of the 4 weddings.

I am thinking, well yeah they are a bit similar, but I am 34 not 18, I am just not fussed if they are and we wear them to the same wedding. I just cant seem to see that it is a big deal and given the limited options out there for stylish maternity wear, I am a bit irked that she has decided to make an issue about it.

So, AIBU to still buy/wear it? Not that this is important to me, but I did describe my dress 1st!

Gawd. Tragic really!

You can wear, for example, turquoise shoes and beads, she can wear maybe a cream cardigan and hat. You'll look different enough as long as you both don't buy orange fascinators and the same handbag.

I like the dress you have picked out. I would buy it. The 2 dresses are not that similar IMO and anyone who would get upset is being over sensitive.

At the Royal Wedding THREE people wore the same Matthew Williamson frock coat - none of them threw a hissy fit.

Go with your choice OP, and accesorize differently......

supercal · 31/05/2011 13:00

thekidsmom - you can't be sure that none of the Royal Wedding MW Three had a hissy fit, surely? They're unlikely to go off on one in front of the cameras.
'Oi you slaaaag, what re you and your fat bum doing in my dress?'
'Don't you speak to me like that! I am a duchess, innit. Right, outside the abbey, NOW'
'Bring it, bitch'

JustKeepSwimming · 31/05/2011 13:12

I think you should wear it.

Just in case though, try Seraphine, they have nice stuff.

howsthatworkingforyou · 31/05/2011 13:19

I think she should be more accomadating you are expecting so more limited in what you can wear.

lurkerspeaks · 31/05/2011 13:42

It is one of the hazards of modern life - virtually all my friends shop in Hobbs, Phase Eight, Coast & monsoon for wedding outfits. It always amazes we have fewer outfit clashes and why I quite like buying stuff in the sale to wear the next year as there is less chance of duplication ('cos no one else is as tight as me Wink)

I would buy and wear the dress.

thekidsmom · 31/05/2011 13:46

True, supercal, true - but it would have been entertaining, wouldnt it?

Honeybee79 · 31/05/2011 13:51

yanbu

supercal · 31/05/2011 14:03

it certainly would have been, thekidsmom

They have had a 'Royal Wedding Extraaa!!' programme on ITV2 dedicated to the frocks, the fights, and all the fun of the night.

Mumofaflump · 31/05/2011 14:05

I wouldn't worry too much, I would assume you will be wearing flat shoes (being pregnant?) Your friend will probably be wearing heels. Also, she could always cinch in the waist of hers with a thick belt which would be on trend (I think...) and would completely change the look of the dress.

The garment is just the template, it's the accesories that will differentiate you.

It's gorgeous by the way!

gapants · 31/05/2011 15:30

Thanks all, I was thinking, that the dress might work post bump with a nice tan leather belt cinching it in and a chunky b/f cardi and opaques through winter?

Well, I spoke to my mate this morning, and no mention of "the dress" but it arrives tomorrow so i will try on and see if it even looks good on me! I think/hope she might be realising she was making something out of nothing.

stewiegriffithsmom sorry, I might have made my thread title a little more interesting that the actual story is....{{{{{{whistles, looks away}}}}}}}}

Off to look at Seraphine now...
