10 Things That Piss Me Off About Dogs And Their Owners

First of all, I don't hate dogs. I love my brother's dog, and I'll make friends with any canine in my immediate vicinity. They're mostly cute and loving and blah blah blah. But....

  1. A dog's unconditional love is not a beautiful thing. They have no choice. What are they going to do, pack their bags one day and 'screw you, I'm getting my own place?' They love you, or whoever the hell buys them, because you give them food and shelter and they are pack animals forced to hang around with a human. They 'love' a junkie who beats them, or a drunk old racist crank. They are the sluts of the animal world.
  1. Dog owners generally couldn't give a monkeys if their little 'babies' make other people sick with allergies, or have to step in their disgusting poop. Sure the law says scoop it up or you'll get a fine, but before that how many dog owners took any responsibility for filling the streets and parks with potentially child-blinding sh*t? Maybe three?
  1. Dogs aren't babies.
  1. Most kids are scared of dogs, especially strange ones. Most of us can probably remember being chased by some barking animal bigger than us while the owner laughed and said 'Don't worry he won't bite you.' How would they like it if I came round to their house and wielding an axe shouting at their kids 'I'm going to chop you up hahaha!', then said 'Don't worry, I won't really.'
  1. And sometimes they do bite.
  1. 'My dogs got me through my divorce, they were always there for me, etc.' I could say the same about cigarettes, but that doesn't make them sacred or noble, just dumb animals that would eat you if you had a heart attack and there was no other food in the house.
  1. I'm a vegetarian. If you love animals so much, I hope you have a good reason why some are like children and some are like a sandwich.
  1. Like spinsters and their cats, don't you notice how in general it's the people who aren't good with people that anthropomorphousize (sp?) their pets to a ridiculous degree? Fluffy does not want to wear a little Prada coat, and he doesn't have a favourite TV show. He just wants to sniff stuff, usually other dog's bums, and eat.
  1. And also f*ck, which dog 'lovers' generally make sure he can never do. Unless they've been inspired by that Nancy Friday book...
  1. And raise a family, which dog owners make sure they can never do. Humans take away all their babies and sell them, to other people who will keep them in an infantilized, unnatural state, just to feed their egos and their need to feel needed. Repeat - the monsters take away all their babies!

There, now half the forum hates me. If only I had a wet nose and a little tail they'd forgive me if I pooped in their handbag...

Some dog owners have a sort of evangelical "dogs are great, I love dogs, if you don't love dogs then you're insane" zeal about them that winds non-dog lovers right up. Not all, I know. And I don't dislike dogs myself. But some dog owners are the pet equivalent of the Jehovahs.

But cat owners aren't quite so keen to convert. I think the difference between cat owners and dog owners is that cat owners are usually much more ready to accept that cats can be bloody annoying/cause allergies/crap everywhere/some people hate them than dog owners are. I can't think of a religious sect they're the pet equivalent of.

beesimo · 30/05/2011 21:30

OP

They wouldn't even sniff thee and a lick would be out the question!

TidyDancer · 30/05/2011 21:32

Not all dogs are great, not by a long shot. My cousin has one I can't stand. He's horrible.

Catmilk · 30/05/2011 21:34

These are my own words btw - but a google search will show I did post it once before on another forum. As far as I know, or any search shows, its never been picked up and ran with by anyone else. I stand by what I wrote then, of course, as a recent experience with a dog owner brought the feelings to mind.

GothAnneGeddes · 30/05/2011 21:34

YABU for mentioning that Nancy Friday book.

nenevomito · 30/05/2011 21:36

TidyDancer you're not making yourself look good.

OP This made me laugh, especially number 9 - I think I remember that book from my yoof. Don't necessarily agree with you, but twas funny anyway.

QuickLookBusy · 30/05/2011 21:37

I was going to ask if you've had a bad experience.

You sound very angry OP

TidyDancer · 30/05/2011 21:42

I don't really care tbh baby, the OP wasn't funny. And it was too weird to be serious. No offense meant to you, but really, just don't care. I'm sick of people thinking it's okay to have a go at pets/pet lovers just because they aren't animal lovers themselves.

MadamMemoo · 30/05/2011 21:44

Talk about a generalisation! Not all dog owners are like that are!

pyjamababe · 30/05/2011 21:48

I love our dog. If I'd known how brilliant having a dog was I would have got one a lot sooner in fact. He is gorgeous.

I think dog-haters are slightly suspicious...

HazeltheMcWitch · 30/05/2011 21:49

After careful consideration, I have decided that Number 3 is definitely my favourite.

10 Things That Piss Me Off About Dogs And Their Owners - that '3. Dogs aren't babies.'.

So you extend this disdain to tables also? They are not babies. Nor are bananas, joy, umbrellas, philosophy, etc etc.

You must really like babies.

Catmilk · 30/05/2011 21:56

Hazel, dog-owners aren't generally guilty of treating 'their' animals as if they were umbrellas...

fuzzypicklehead · 30/05/2011 22:12

Speak for yourself, Catmilk.

IvyAndGold · 30/05/2011 22:15

i'm a dog lover. i've owned dogs my entire life, all different sizes, breeds, ages... but i still agree with some of your points. it really annoys me that some dog owners just refuse to consider that some people DO NOT LIKE DOGS. i love dogs but i seriously do not appreciate anybody's dog leaping up at me. i don't care if YOU consider it friendly and harmless, have half a second's thought for someone else's feelings.

MIL has three dogs, one of which is a complete nightmare, a young border collie bitch. she chases people as soon as she sees them and will NOT come back if the person tries to get away. doesn't matter what you say about it to her, she thinks that everyone else should go to classes on what to do if someone else's dog chases you Hmm not her keeping the dog under control, obviously not...

and don't even get me started on the smell of damp dog in the kitchen where they sleep, or the bath that constantly has dog hair in it!

SunshineisSorry · 30/05/2011 22:21

Grin love dogs, totally get the OP though :)

concernedaboutthis · 30/05/2011 22:25

I love my fluffy little baby, I carry her, rock her in my arms, dress her in a little coat, put a bow in her hair, and when I get fed up at night and want to curl up in my nice warm bed, I lock her in a cage ha, ha ,ha {mad cackle} and do you know what SS don't care Biscuit

RedbinD · 30/05/2011 22:28

I wish I owned a dog. Currently I am owned by 3 Siamese cats.

PacificDogwood · 30/05/2011 22:30

The last time I tried to dress a dog I was 4 and got (quite rightly!) growled at Grin.

Sunshine summed it up nicely: I like dogs, but do get (most) of the OP's points.
And am incandescent about the dog poo landmines that litter our street Angry and end up on our shoes, buggywheels, toddler's hands and baby's mouth .

microserf · 30/05/2011 22:31

Damn this was funny OP. Not entirely sure if this was your intention (no 7!)

You forgot 11 "ensure house in which they live always smells like dog to prevent any dog haters from entering"

microserf · 30/05/2011 22:32

doh! to prevent any dog haters from entering

Giselle99 · 30/05/2011 22:34

The Best Mumsnet Post EVER. Love it. More please, Catmilk!

PotPourri · 30/05/2011 22:34

I know someone whos dog bites people it doesn't know because it thinks they are intruders. And according to the owners, it is the person's fault. Funnily enough I don't go to that house - ever. I also hate the smell of dog, and have only been to 2 houses in my entire life where they had a dog and the house doesn't smell (but they were super clean, spottless houses). Each to their own, but at least have the decency to try and see it from other people's point of view. I try to.

Popbiscuit · 30/05/2011 22:52

OP; they have therapy for this!

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 30/05/2011 23:15

So it was posted in 2009 and you still can't spell?

DrNortherner · 30/05/2011 23:18

I love my dog, he is far nicer than many humans. Smile
