AIBU?

To be sick of the property bragging on here lately.

or is it just me?

For what it's worth, this is the property we have our eye on. It's all we can afford and at this price it's a push anyway.

In Newcastle you could probably get a similar house for 100k. I feel sorry for Southerners

Depends which areas you're prepared to live in. If you want to live somewhere nice in Newcastle you won't get a flat for £100k. Similar property for similar price to OP's:

OP, it's ridiculous to complain that other people are bragging. Some people have more money than others. Some people live in different areas of the country. Everyone's just living their own life, no matter what the house they live in cost.

I really seem to be missing something. You are looking to buy a house not far off £300,000k and are feeling hard done by? Aw diddums.

It's probably just my inherent nosiness but I always wonder when I see threads of people buying houses worth over half a mil, how people afford them? I have a good job, I've always worked, yet I have a bloody big mortgage which takes 2/3 of my salary on a house worth less than that (on a good day and with a following wind it might make £400k, but only after I've spent another £20k doing it up Hmm).

I know I'm better off than many people, and I'm certainly grateful for what I have, but I always have the feeling that I don't have as much to show for working FT and being frugal as I should. Especially since my neighbour, who is an engineer working for Virgin, and whose DW doesn't work, has a much nicer house than me. and a Range rover! :)

Kitty - in our case we bought a house at the bottom of the last slump (1998/9) and the value of the property we live in has gone up by £450,000. Dh and I can't take any kind of credit for that.

My favourite boasting is always the ones that say, " Oh my gosh, you can get a house for under £700 0000 0000 where you live? Oh my! Where I live which is obviously super dooper uber posh and lovelier than where you live with a much better sort of person as a neighbour you wouldn't even get a garage for that price which also indicates just how considerably richer than yow I am because yunno, I live there in a house

Bibbity - to me the value of your house is irrelevant. It's still a small terrace.
It is identical to our first house which cost us £45K.

Man, I'm glad I live in the north! That's a lovely house, but v expensive to my mind. It would indeed be half the price round here, and we're in a nice neighbourhood.

PS wooden floors are the bane of my fricking life. I have to sweep at least twice a day and mop every day if I want them to look anything like. I also have palps whenever DS climbs on the furniture, hard wood floors are hard.
What I wouldn't give for some lovely shag-pile...

Our house cost 40k. We were lucky to be able to afford it. I am well aware of fortuunate we are to even own a house. Your post sounds braggy to me. We could never afford £285k. That's an awful lot of house around here. Move if you can't afford to live where you do.

Nah - you was bragging Grin

But I wouldn't live in a terrace in London for all the tea in China so it's lost on me.

bibbity, you obviously bought well! TBH I've only got the house I have now because I bought the previous one in 97 and sold it for a good profit. If I still had it now, it would be worth nearly 3 times what I paid for it (75k to about 215k). Not as good as £450k sadly.
