I walked past the house of a family who I do know but not terribly well and I am aware there middle daughter is being bullied.

outside was a group of girls looking in through their window shouting and jeering and swearing. I know the mum works some afternoons so I did intervien and tell the group of girls to leave them alone and move away from the house...in hindsight a bit silly of me as I did have my 5 yr old dd with me, but I wasn't in any way afraid forour safety or anything. Turns out the mum was home and she also then came out. They took the message and went away, but then followed me up the street shouting and swearing and berating me. It was laughable really but attempted to call non emergency police no just to show the little shits they can get away with behaving like this, but my bloody mobile died on me.

Anyway I have been trying to call the school since 3.30 and no one has been available to take my call, and have just now been told all senior management staff left at 4.15 and receptionist cant locate any other teaching staff. no one will be in over half term. now I m shocked that the head did not pick up his answer messages before leaving the school for a whole week, I had left one message at 3.30 and one at 4pm. I find it hard to even believe the head of a secondary school would even finish at 4.15.

Im tempted to call the non emergancy no again to give the message to the school this not acceptable, but Im sure this is very little the police would even be able to do.

also I want to say bunch of little bitches how horrible for a group of girls to behave like this!!!!!

While I am not saying you are wrong to be concerned about the problems with the kids and I'm sure the school will want to know about it, it is totally unreasonable to expect someone to be in school to take your call until 6pm. Teachers do not answer the school telephone when in school (even in the unlikely event of them hearing it from their classroom); it is the office staff who answer the phone and many work part-time or limited time after school. Schools are all trying to save money and can't have a member of staff sitting the phone incase someone wants to phone in. Our school office closes 30 minutes after end of school. Lots of staff are still in school until at least 5.30pm most nights, but there is no way we answer the phone. Although I agree many teachers do breath a collective exhausted sigh at the end of a busy half term and dash home for an earlier night, knowing we will spend all half term holidays writing school reports.

A group of school children in uniform followed my SIL round the block near her home, jeering at ther dd 3 yrs. She felt really intimidated and called the school. The deputy said it was a school matter as they were walking back from school in uniform and that they should be setting a good example.

I think that if they were in uniform, the school should deal with it and if not, you should make them aware after half term about what's going on.

mollymole · 27/05/2011 19:02

well done for being so public spirited

yes the school do need to know as the girls were in uniform - but it can wait until the school re-opens

as regards to you being the one to contact PCSO or police, surely this is the responsibility of the parent - unless you felt that they were intimidating you as well

TILLYTULIP - are you really thinking ' a bit of shouting' - do you really think this sort of behaviour is acceptable -

GypsyMoth · 27/05/2011 19:04

TheFlyingOnion · 27/05/2011 19:11

AIBU to not know what a mev is? Confused

tomhardyismydh · 27/05/2011 19:11

I do agree I would not have called the police on the families behalf, I attempted to call further up the road and report they were following me and shouting and swearing, that is also why I have not actually the number back, as there is very little they could now do on that matter, and I would not like to take it as my liberty to report to police on their behalf.

I wanted to go to the bank to complain about something at 6pm at night - AIBU to expect that they should have stayed after their work hours finished into a bank holiday weekend just in case I wandered up with a gripe to complain about?

My accountant left work at 5pm for her week's holiday and didn't stay till 5.15 when I decided to ring her about my accounts and now she's off in Lanzarote for a week... AIBU to be upset?

Nope - but it's expected of teachers. Gawd I was out of the door and offski 15 minutes after the bell went today - one of the few times I am! It can also be a bugger to track a teacher down within the school building outside school hours as well - in case they're in resource cupboards, the ICT room trying to beg a printout out of the printer, the photocopier room, stationery cupboard... we used to track my old head down by the temperature of the abandoned cups of coffee left all over the place.

Goblinchild · 27/05/2011 19:13

But with my serious and sober hat on, surely what you want is the harassment to be dealt with effectively and quickly OP?
In which case, the local police are the best option, rather than waiting another 9 days until the school can do something. The police can work with the head to put an appropriate response together. Unless the recipients of the abuse really don't want you to take it any further. In which case, reporting it to the police will hopefully mean they get advice and support from them and encouragement to take it further.
Unless you are more annoyed about the office staff going home than the abuse.

GypsyMoth · 27/05/2011 19:14

shouting.....even nastily....is NOT illegal!!Hmm

mercibucket · 27/05/2011 19:14

I'm amazed they let the teachers go home at all - they should have someone senior on 24 hour call out in case any of their pupils get up to mischief

TheFlyingOnion · 27/05/2011 19:15

actually shouting is technically assualt, Tilly,

lecce · 27/05/2011 19:15

Schools don't operate the same hours as other 'businesses' do they? When I get in at 7.15 am the car-park is often half -full. Yes, one of the perks of the job is that, apart from the teaching and meetings, lots of our work can be done elsewhere at our own convenience. Hence I, and most of my colleagues, left school at 3.30 with boots full of laptops and marking. This has enabled me to spend a couple of hours with my own dc before bedtime. Is that ok with you, OP?

Some people obviously have no idea whatsoever how a school works. Teaching staff, slt or otherwise, don't sit at desks waiting for phones to ring. They could be in classroooms planning, having meetings, standing in a corridor having an impromptu meeting...Or they might have gone home because the pupils have gone and they are perfectly entitled to go too.

OP - you mentioned not being surprised at kids' behaviour given the attitudes on here. I too have no wonder that kids in school misbehave if some of the attitudes against teachers expressed on MN are communicated to the posters' dc.

TheFlyingOnion · 27/05/2011 19:15

or even assault??

GypsyMoth · 27/05/2011 19:19

i wonder how many arrests have been made for shouting? and how many prosecutions came from it

TheFlyingOnion · 27/05/2011 19:20

thanks Smile.

Is the OP a mev?

Ishani · 27/05/2011 19:20

Shouting in this manner is ilegal, my brother and his ex were shouting at each in the street and got arrested fit breaching the peace well he did despite her being the one with the potty mouth but that's another story. You cannot stand in public swearing in a loud voice.
