to have wall stickers in our dining room?

Or are they unspeakably naff?

I was thinking something like this:

eat drink enjoy

bon appetit

We are skint after re-doing the kitchen and can't afford an amazing piece of original art work, etc etc. But worry they belong on the 'things that are dated' thread.

Do you have (non-kids) wall stickers in your home? AIBU/naff?

Small ones ok but massive ones look like a coffee house or pub.

I think they're hideous. I think if you really really wanted them you could probably pull them off in a breakfast room (wooden 3D kitsch letters), but not a dining room.

Horses for courses. Thought about stencilling yourself if you can't just leave the wall be?

My friend has several in her house and they look fab, they are longer quotations dotted about the place. I was sorely tempted to get one for our bedroom when I decorated but lacked quote inspiration. If you like them, go for it. Beats a boring ikea print!

There's nicer stuff out there for not much - after you got one of those stickers from ebay and paid for shipping you would probably be spending about £15, so try etsy alchemy to commission something and make it clear that your budget is £15 including shipping. Also, Ikea has cheapo images ready to hang, or you could order a print and get a frame from Ikea or elsewhere. Or how about 3 or 4 much smaller framed images which are each about £3? you can pick up some very stuff at antique shops or jumble sales if you're patient and wait for something to come up.

I'd say just leave the walls bare for now, and build the decoration over time, nothing wrong with that - not like you're having some big unveiling for TV cameras or anything (or are you?)

PS Ikea has some nicer things to hang on your wall that are more interesting than those out of focus flower photos you see everywhere:

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. I'm not really a fan of abstract art at all TBH. Elsewhere in the hosue we have things like black and white framed prints of places we've been, fabric canvases, and close up flower type jobbies which I am trying to phase out.

Tyelperion thank you for the tip about etsy I will have a look there now.

I know theres nothing wrong with leaving the walls bare for the time being, its more just that there will probably never be a time when we can afford something really 'wow' IYSWIM.

If you like them, then that should be enough. There are times that I would prefer to be in a coffee shop/All Bar One than my own dining room!
I think that, like the calligraphy wallpaper of a few years ago, you may well tire of them quite quickly.So maybe a short term fix.

valium no not insulted at all, my house is stuffed with paintings by my uncle who is a professional painter, sketches by DH, other paintings by friends who are artists, and 19th c studio photographs of family so I've never bought anything from Ikea myself.

I would personally prefer a Klimt print, no matter how many people had it, or something really odd than wall writing in a TTfont out of MS word but as I said - I'm a random person on the internet, doesn't matter a whit what I think Smile

My house is full of wonderful inherited artwork.

I love it all.

Hate canvas prints, especially in black and white. And of children or wedding days. It's rather dull IMO.

I don't know why I'm even on this thread - I haven't got anything on the walls at all in the entire house apart from HUGE mirrors. I have only just realised this! I am the least vain person I know too, hate looking at myself and loathe preening. How very odd! Grin

I like some wall graphics but not others. I don't think I'd chose ones saying those things for the dining room but I am considering something small with birds for somewhere in our house. I just need the right something and the right bit of wall Smile

Have you tried caroline mcgrath for wall graphics? They have some quirkier graphics so you might find something a bit less 'coffee shop' on there. They aren't too pricy and the they are good quality.

I bought LO one of their graphics for his bedroom, the robot one, but I've mounted it on paper and put it in a frame so it's movable and can be removed and put back as my his tastes change as he gets older.

Really though, if you like them then why shouldn't you have them? If we all decorated the same it would be boring and so if you think you would like it then go for it, you can always change it very easily if you feel it has dated.

I think the issue is that I was thinking by getting somethign big, that would kind of take care of that wall, IYSWIM? its quite a long wall and I never know what to do with walls like that- one large print? Several small ones grouped together? medium sized ones spread out? Confused

In an ideal, ideal world I would love something more personal to us, in particular something 'moroccan' themed as it is a place with very happy memories for us. I kick myself for not buying more when we were there but I just couldn't get things home.

Having said that unless covering a hole in the wall at short notice there is NO excuse for the buying of Ikea prints. Try etsy.com for lovely photos and original prints. You get something lovely and you support an individual, everyone wins!

YOu could always frame some quirky posters, or sheet music.

I bought some fabulous wrapping paper full of every book Penguin have every published. It's framed in my downstairs WC and looks fabulous.

Have what you like! It's your home, you are the ones that have to be happy looking at whatever you put on your walls!

almost every time we have decorated/updated a room, I have found myself almost trying to justify our choices to certain other people, only to find that when they visit and see the item in situ, that they really like it. So much so in one person's case, (who really doesn't like me and finds it hard to admit I can do anything right, don't you MIL?) that frequently the next time we see her in her own home, she has tried to copy the same ideas! ( Actually, thinking about it, what wonderful revenge for all her nastiness and bitchiness over the years - to have something of my taste staring at her in her own home everyday of the week, and done by her own hand too!)

Anyway, seriously, have what you want and what makes you happy, not just whatever is fashionable/acceptable to others.
