www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2011/may/25/adele-tax-grievances

Surely most people would just be pleased that they'd earned £8 million, and grateful to the general public for spending so much money on her music?

Also, while she clearly doesn't realise trains have been privatised, she presumably never plans to use a road or pavement again - as clearly her tax bill couldn't go towards paying for them? Likewise I imagine she never plans to avail herself of the police, fire or ambulance services? Nor of course is she benefiting financially from the various free-trade agreements (worked out at the taxpayers' expense) that allow her to sell her music overseas and thus get such a whopping tax bill? She make think state schools are shit, but she went to one - who does she think paid for it?

Why is it the more money people seem to earn the stingier they get?

I am outraged by that interview. Surely she knows that mortified means embarrassed rather than angry?

AccioPinotGrigio · 27/05/2011 15:03

Adele has an extraordinary voice, she is a talented lyricist and a captivating live performer. Her physical appearance and her personal circumstances have had naff all to do with her success nor any acclaim which, from my extensive reading of the musical press, is tinged neither with sympathy or condescension.

You absolutely DO NOT get to the top of the Billboard charts for that long on, for want of a much better expression, the 'Susan Boyle Effect'. This is utter, utter nonsense.

Yes Lequeen (sigh) for a couple weeks SB did top the Billboard and indeed had some incredibly impressive sales figures. I concede that. But I cannot accept that Adele's success is based on the same kind of mawkish, sentimental, pity for the individual and her personal circumstances. Adele is a fully rounded performer/lyricist to compare her with SB is like comparing apples and oranges.

QuickLookBusy · 27/05/2011 15:37

Adele is bloody talented and considering she is only 22 and has sold millions of albums I just hope she manages to stay sane.

I do think she has her head screwed on though.

sympathy? Blimey I don't feel sympathy only admiration. But I do think she is really attractive

QuickLookBusy · 27/05/2011 16:05

Agree Noddy, I think she is gorgeous, like someone in one of those beautiful Ruben's paintings.

LDNmummy · 27/05/2011 16:08

Some of the greatest lyricists and musicians of all time have had voices that are not the melodic norm.

Tina Turner
Stevie Wonder
Cher

Plus various bands with alternative sounding vocals.

Narrow minded indeed to think that because you don't think she is lyrically talented, it is a fad that everyone else is following to like her music.

noddyholder · 27/05/2011 16:09

Me too her voice looks like it comes from a woman and she does look rubenesque.

AccioPinotGrigio · 27/05/2011 16:10

She may not be Bertolt Brecht or Lorenz Hart but in the context of her industry - the pop industry - where not many of her peers are writing their own material, she stands out for all the right reasons.

LDNmummy · 27/05/2011 16:12

Oh and I also think she is beautiful, the only thing that makes her look anything else by normal showbiz standards is her weight.

If showbiz tells us anything, it is that people who are not the western icon of beauty model type, get a harder time making it big. Yes Susan Boyle made it big temporarily, but she had backing from the biggest TV show in the country to boost her career and with all the praise came a lot of cruelty about her appearance. And Adele has had staying power because people actually think she is talented, SB is no longer in the media.

KatieScarlett2833 · 27/05/2011 16:18

I thinks she has a great voice.

Couldn't care less about her views on taxation. Pay it and STFU.

I hate her voice to the point that i turn the radio over when she comes on

BertieBotts · 27/05/2011 18:04

Well I'll join you LDN in the fan club Grin

MrsCog · 27/05/2011 18:18

Judging by her weight she's going to be using the NHS plenty in the future so she might as well build up some credit in it.

cjel · 27/05/2011 18:27

I think her music is great but must admit I find anyone who moans about tax paying is selfish, Perhaps no one asked her if her elderly relative needed care who does she think covers all the cost, and isn't it great that we can help out those who are unable to earn 8million by the time they are 122 let alone 22 despite working really hard, crap jobs just to keep a roof over their heads. The amount of effort doesn't always correspond to reward. I think she is just young and silly

seeminglyso · 28/05/2011 18:25

laughing at these comments:

''She is, however, a poster child, for hundreds of thousands of girls who feel they don't fit society's criteria for what constitutes desirable''

and about her future need for the NHS...she might want to think of it like this..she is a 'fatty' who is 'making it' so some teenage girls may feel less inclined to loose some weight, hence they will need the NHS later in life themselves ..so in essence Adele you should pay a lot of tax as you are causing an indirect strain on public services in the future. It is unhealthy to be fat..fact!

davidtennantsmistress · 28/05/2011 18:30

'Judging by her weight she's going to be using the NHS plenty in the future so she might as well build up some credit in it.'

Shock that's an awful statement to make, why does it matter about her size if she's happy & healthy as she is - it's nice to see an artist who's not a size 0 with fod issues.

good on her I say openly admitting she eats what she likes and resists the pressure to diet.

I think it might be possible some of her comments were taken out of context? I think she's fab.

TakeItOnTheChins · 28/05/2011 19:57

good on her I say openly admitting she eats what she likes and resists the pressure to diet.

Thing is, it's all very well her saying now that she eats what she likes. She's 23. I'd put money on the likelihood that by the time she's 33 she'll be starting to wish she'd eaten fewer pies and maybe spent a bit more time exercising.

Personally, I think that the "You're beautiful as you are, whatever your shape" line, that seems to popular these days, has a lot to answer for.

No, there's nothing wrong with being a few pounds overweight but I think society is becoming far too accepting of obesity. There are young women/teens walking around these days in next to nothing - happy to dress in clothes that, years ago, fat women wouldn't dream of wearing.

I actually think that the likes of Adele, proudly proclaiming that they eat loads, drink beer and never visit the gym, are as irresponsible as a Kate Moss lookalike encouraging a teenage girl to live on water and tissues.

seeminglyso · 28/05/2011 20:03

totally agree takeitonthechins!

davidtennantsmistress · 28/05/2011 20:06

but likewise lady gaga coming out and saying she eats nothing but baby food to diet - that isn't as healthy either or am I wrong?

if a person is happy & healthy does it matter their size - I am hardly a slim jim yet usually keep fit (ish) and would say healthy - being healthy doesn't go hand in hand with being a certain shape.

When I see adelle I see a lady who's comfortable in the skin which surely is what we should be encouraging young ladies/children to feel?
