I am not trying to be smug, but I would never intentionallytake my kids to a fast food place (like McDonald's, for example). We have eaten there a few times when it was a last resort, but I honestly think it is the worst food you can eat, even if it's only in moderation. I keep hearing casual comments from friends about going out as a family for an evening meal to McDonald's , and I just scratch my head; if I want a meal out, there are plenty of places we can go as a family that isn't going to cost a fortune, and where we can eat proper food. Am I wrong to feel this way?? I'm probably being all judgey pants about it, but I just don't get it....

Here, I'll get my own Biscuit.

so you slice the apple with the knife and then... eat it with a fork? Or your fingers?

nijinsky · 24/05/2011 19:22

You present it to your mouth with your knife. Seriously, do people really not learn how to use cutlery properly? Its far easier and quicker to eat an apple with a knife than it is with your fingers. Always supposing you are comfortable with the use of a knife and fork in the first place of course...I had no idea that my upbringing was so unusual. Where my family sat together at a table for the evening meal, eating cooked food, and using cutlery.

nijinsky · 24/05/2011 19:23

Bleurgh, this thread is making me feel really quite sick now. I had no idea so many people didn't eat with cutlery, and now I can't stop thinking about how the meat is MacDonalds burgers and in kebabs is so smooth and unmeatlike...

thisisyesterday · 24/05/2011 19:28

am pmsl at people eating apples with knives

fwiw Nijinsky, I eat all of my MEALS with cutlery, and was brought up to do so at home

that doesn't mean I have to eat every single thing with a fucking knife and fork. I mean really! I am sure you like feeling superior and all, but I think you'll find you're in a minority with the whole apple thing (even among the aristocracy n all!)

btw, McDonald's burgers are not "smooth" at all, they're regular burgers made with regular meat. But you wouldn't know that cos you've never been in ther eright?

BooyHoo · 24/05/2011 19:28

erm, most people i know lift an apple and bite into it. there is no faffing about with knives, side plates and silver service waiters required.

thisisyesterday · 24/05/2011 19:28

and am pmsl even more that you actually feel sick that people eat apples with their hands

on a serious note, do you have OCD? if so then that's understandable

smartyparts · 24/05/2011 19:35

I'm not averse to a bit of crap now and then, but tend to do it covertly, when kids aren't around!

We were at Miami airport recently with dcs. Only place open to eat (it's a rubbish airport) was McDonald's. Kids were v keen to eat there as they've not had one since they were toddlers.

It was disgusting!

Dcs left most of theirs and still talk about how revolting it was.

PeterSpanswick · 24/05/2011 19:37

I find McDonalds terribly pretentious.. Did you know they hide vegetables in the burgers? And they offer you plastic SPOONS for the desserts even though I explain on every visit that cutlery just slows me down.

blossomtrees · 24/05/2011 19:37

are you Gwyneth Paltrow? Apparently she said she would DIE rather than give her kids cup a soup

cunexttuesonline · 24/05/2011 19:40

Nijinsky - I was brought up to believe that it is bad manners to put your knife in your mouth.

cunexttuesonline · 24/05/2011 19:43

(or eating from knife, even if not in mouth)

thisisyesterday · 24/05/2011 19:46

actually, i think Nijinsky is winding us up now

charitygirl · 24/05/2011 19:48

I'm such a snobby Londoner that, to me, 'fast food' = Leon and Wahaca Grin

PiaThreeTimes · 24/05/2011 19:52

YANBU.

There's nothing good about McDonalds, KFC etc.

COCKadoodledooo · 24/05/2011 19:55

"I eat an apple with a knife. I prefer to peel an apple and then slice it with a knife. Is this really a novel idea on here? Do people actually on here actually have homes with dining tables and cutlery in their drawers or is this unheard of??"

How, for the love of God*, tell me HOW are these two things related? Seriously? Just because folk don't eat apples with knives (which is seriously strange, and I have known one person do ever in my life) how on earth can you infer that they are savages have no dining table or cutlery??
Oh and you assertion that it is quicker to eat an apple with a knife than by holding it in your hand is frankly bonkers,

  • insert deity of choice
TotalChaos · 24/05/2011 19:57

re:apple/knife - do you mean chopping up the apple (perfectly sensible), or actually spearing apple onto knife and putting in your mouth?

hairfullofsnakes · 24/05/2011 20:02

I like a macca d but really it does taste like shit because if it goes cold you can taste how it really is and its not pleasant!

I don't think you are smug - you don't like it, that's fair enough!

A1980 · 24/05/2011 20:04

YABU

I don't like MCD's, never go and last ate there as a child.

Do you realise that in the grand scheme of things McDonalds is not that unhealthy as long as it is in moderation, just once in a while.

Also consdier so called healthier options for food on the go:

Pret a Manger markets itself as follows: "Pret creates handmade natural food avoiding the obscure chemicals, additives and preservatives common to so much of the 'prepared' and 'fast' food on the market today."

But interestingly a MCD's Chicken sandwich has 385 calories, 16g of fat and 2g of saturated fat. Not great!

BUT

Compare with a Pret a Manger Club sandwich: it only has chicken, bacon and salad in it and yet it contains 551 calories 30.3g fat and 4.9g saturated fat.

A Big Mac has 490 calories and 24 grams of fat so you're better off with a big mac than a pret chicken sandwich.

Shock

If you actually read th fat and calorie content of most so called heathly sandwiches you'd be similarly shocked. Many are lethal lethal.

People slag off McDonald's no end while failing to realise that popping into Pret several times a week on your lunch break is actually more unhealthy than McDonalds. You would consume less fat and calories by eating a big mac rather than the fresh healthy pret sandwich.

Food for thought.

northerngirl41 · 24/05/2011 20:07

So if you don't eat in McDs and you are out and about - where do you eat?

Because actually Pret is owned by McDonalds and some of their salads/baguettes/sandwiches contain MORE fat and more calories than a burger. In fact, an awful lot of supposedly "healthy" food contains hidden calories, fats and salt. Whilst you smugly tuck into your Boots Shapers sandwich, take a wee look at the salt content... Even your pre-packaged salad is probably bathed in nitrogen to keep it fresh for longer.

thisisyesterday · 24/05/2011 20:10

you talk as though mcdonalds is the only place to go!

as i[ve said further down, i go to mcdonald's sometimes, have nothing against it, it wouldn't be my first choice tho!

I tend to look for independent looking cafe/sandwich bar/baked potato serving place simply because i like to support small businesses and i find they're usually more helpful with regard to ds2 and ds3's intolerances (ie, they're happy to make a sarnie up without butter)

if i have a little more time then i would seek out a yo sushi! or wagamama or similar

A1980 · 24/05/2011 20:11

I know Pret is owned by mcDonalds but alot of people don't nor do they realsie how unhealthy it is.

I know that all conveneince food even the healthy options are loaded with additives and salt. The salads are terrible.

I work full time and buying food out every day would me around £60-£100 a month. So I make my own sandwiches or salads or pastas. The lettuce goes tired much easier and it doesn't look as sexy but I know what I've put in it. I don't slather it in mayo, etc. Just simple things.

chicletteeth · 24/05/2011 20:17

Nijinsky you really need to get over yourself.

"I eat an apple with a knife", "Bleurgh this thread is making me feel quite sick"

How on earth do you think an apple is meant to be eaten?

Hands up, who just picks up an apple and eats it as, errr, nature intended!

Dearie me. Please don't continue to think of yourself as so posh that you can't fathom the idea of eating anything without cutlery!

You don't get much posher than my DH and he would laugh laugh laugh at your ridiculous ideas of how to eat food.

His dear aunt only eats her asparagus with her fingers, what do you make of that?

northerngirl41 · 24/05/2011 20:27

thisisyesterday - absolutely not but my point is sometimes the "healthy" choices on the high street are worse than McDonalds but they get the heat anyway...

To take your example of Wagamamas being healthy: Yaki Soba Noodles are reasonably low calorie @ 510, but they actually contain 22g of fat and 62% of your RDA of salt. Whereas a McChicken sandwich has 285 calories 16% fat and 32% RDA of salt.

thisisyesterday · 24/05/2011 20:32

but where did i say i was concerned with the "healthiness" of food? Confused

i just like wagamamas better

plus, you get MASSIVE portions, so let's be fair and actually compare a meal in wagamamas with a meal in mcdonalds (inc fries and a coke/shake)

and it's also important to remember that health is not only to do with how much fat/calories things have in them, but how processed they are.
one example would be butter. I would far prefer butter to margarine, i believe it is healthier.
wagamama food is really pretty unprocessed.

thisisyesterday · 24/05/2011 20:36

so a medium fries in mcdonalds will add...

330kcal
16g fat
0.6g salt (12% GDA)
