I am not trying to be smug, but I would never intentionallytake my kids to a fast food place (like McDonald's, for example). We have eaten there a few times when it was a last resort, but I honestly think it is the worst food you can eat, even if it's only in moderation. I keep hearing casual comments from friends about going out as a family for an evening meal to McDonald's , and I just scratch my head; if I want a meal out, there are plenty of places we can go as a family that isn't going to cost a fortune, and where we can eat proper food. Am I wrong to feel this way?? I'm probably being all judgey pants about it, but I just don't get it....

Here, I'll get my own Biscuit.

yes babyheave - it is the premise of frying - that is why fried food is not healthy Smile

worraliberty · 24/05/2011 18:19

You may not be British but that hasn't stopped you arguing a point until it looks as though you're losing the argument hands down....

KatieScarlett2833 · 24/05/2011 18:24

Aww, give eve a break.

I remember when I gave a shit about what my kids ate, how I would lovingly hand prepare nutritionally organic balanced meals. Hell, I even used to juice stuff! I never darkened the doors of Maccy D's, and if forced would insist on DC's getting carrot sticks, milk and fish fingers whilst shuddering at Ronald McDonald and his evil capitalist regime.

Then they grew up and I gave up. We are all surprisingly fit and slim regardless.

Mrsmackie · 24/05/2011 18:29

We rarely go to McDonbalds as we are vegetarians - but occasionally pop in for a coffee if we are on the road. DD who is two calls it the Milk cafe as she always has one of the little bottles of milk in there. Quite funny that whenever she sees the golden arches she points and says "Look there is a milk cafe!" Happy to keep it that way for now - although I do think anything in moderation and do quite enjoy the french fries!

lurkerspeaks · 24/05/2011 18:33

I think you are mad. Fish & Chips is definitely fast food. Just because it is in your village and independently owned does not make it less of a fast food joint. A less misleading thread title would have been "to think that McDonalds is... rubbish"

Then I would have agreed with you but all your pseudo food snobbery had just pissed me off.

Yes, McDonalds et al do serve "rubbish" food, but the odd one now and again is not going to kill a kid.

I think booyhoo has made Eve realise she can't substantiate her argument, and she's run away.

BooyHoo · 24/05/2011 18:54

oops Blush
i didn't mean to make anyone do anything they didn't want to do. i just want to understand the logic of snobbery.

valiumredhead · 24/05/2011 18:55

IIRC big fat chip shop chips are better for you than skinny French Fries - can't remember exactly why something to do with surface area and soaking up the oil..........

nijinsky · 24/05/2011 19:00

lecce Let's face it, a lot of the anti-MD comments on here stem from simple snobbery. There is no other reason to turn up one's nose at MacD's but think that chippy food, supermarket sandwiches etc are fine. There was a programme on about supermarket sandwiches recently and the high salt content was shocking.

I said I didn't eat fish and chips takeaways and supermarket salads or sandwiches either. They're all equally bad, although nothing smells as bad as MacDonalds.

The objection to eating with fingers is just weird, surely we all eat sandwiches etc with fingers and eating chips with fingers is no greasier than crisps and pizzas.

Its not wierd at all. Its a downgrading of standards. My horse eats out of a bucket, I have fingers therefore I prefer to use a knife and fork! Particularly if food is messy - sandwiches are generally not messy as they are contained within bread ie you don't get the filling all over your fingers, and if you do, they should probably be eaten with a knife and fork. The whole point of a sandwich is that it can be cleanly eaten with no cutlery away from the dining table. MacDonalds generally provide tables yet no proper cutlery.

Re you Temple Grandin comment. Yes, MacDonalds, an American company, will do whatever is economically expedient to protect its market share. Don't kid yourself that this is (a) necessarily permanent and (b) out of some concern for animal welfare.

valiumredhead · 24/05/2011 19:00

excuse the apostrophe! [shock!]

icantbelieveimnotbitter · 24/05/2011 19:01

booyhoo, don't worry, twas just amusing to watch her trying and failing to explain an unreasonable point of view.

ie why her local independent chippy is quality food and Harry Ramsdens is crap. Hmm Grin

ThisisaSignofthetimes · 24/05/2011 19:03

Texture of McD's food is like someone has pre chewed it. The buns have no taste whatsoever and the bit between the buns bears no resemblance to a burger (can't speak for any other fillings have only ever had a burger). having said that I'll take my dd in there once in while, she likes it and it doesn't do any harm, and the coffee isn't bad.

Hullygully · 24/05/2011 19:05

All processed food is shit. Fact.

BooyHoo · 24/05/2011 19:07

all hullys are processed. fact. Wink

cunexttuesonline · 24/05/2011 19:07

BooyHoo · 24/05/2011 19:08

does anybody eat their apples/oranges/bananas with a knife and fork?

Portofino · 24/05/2011 19:09

I am starving now and there isn't a McD's for miles!

nijinsky · 24/05/2011 19:13

I eat an apple with a knife. I prefer to peel an apple and then slice it with a knife. Is this really a novel idea on here? Do people actually on here actually have homes with dining tables and cutlery in their drawers or is this unheard of??

Am seriously wondering what people on here would do if they went to a restaurant with a properly laid table!

Reminds me of when I was in the States and in a Wendys (once) and saw a family of adults eating pancakes with maple syrups and fresh cream with their fingers. Gross.

I wouldn't have considered myself extremely posh or anything but really, I don't know people who eat at MacDonalds regularly.

BooyHoo · 24/05/2011 19:17

ok i'll give you that njinsky and there is no need to be so bloody superior about using cutlery. what about your oranges/plums/bananas/grapes etc knife and fork for those aswell i suppose. Hmm
