to be sick to death of having to put up with other people's dogs

I am not a dog person. I think they're nice but I don't want to pet a dog or be anywhere near them really. This partly comes from being attacked by a dog as a young child.

This was never a problem when I lived in Ireland, where a dog is a subservient pet that is to be kept in line. In busy areas dogs are generally kept on a lead at all times and IME if a loose dog ever came up to me the owner always apologised and pulled the dog away. In the park where I used to go walking any dog that wasn't on a lead was taken away by the pound, whether the owner was close by or not. This was to protect the wildlife in the area.

Since moving to England I have come to hate dogs, not really through any fault of their own. There is a common near me where I often go walking with DS, who thankfully is still in a pram so I don't have to worry about him. On every single occasion, often more than once, a large dog has come up to me, often running. On a couple of occasions a dog has jumped up on me, scaring the absolute shit out of me. On practically every occasion the owner has either not been anywhere in the vicinity (as the dog has run far ahead of them) or has smiled indulgently and uttered the immortal phrase "he is very friendly!" before feebly calling the dog and offering no apology for the fact that dog invaded my space and scared me. On a few occasions I have been scared witless by dogs viciously fighting on the path.

AIBU to think the owners have a responsibility to keep their dogs close to them and not allow them to harrass other people?

Babybythesea, if you're worried and can't trust your dog then it would be best to keep her on a lead.

oooh also my aunties dog is half wolf and vicious as hell. still not why sure she has it, its beautiful though but very very strong.

Vallhala · 26/05/2011 11:22

"we eat all other animals."

Please don't tar us all with that very dirty brush, knitted.

tethersend · 26/05/2011 11:22

"Excuse me for being a little volatile when trying to defend my breed from yet more misinformation and misunderstanding."

Is nobody else impressed with hephaestus being a husky who can type?

Has anyone got Max Clifford's number?

knittedbreast · 26/05/2011 11:24

Valhalla im veggie, but as a species we eat pretty much all animals, i was just meaning why is it shocking to eat dogs when eating cows is seen as ok

thinNigella · 26/05/2011 11:25

I do not like dogs. They smell and c**p everywhere.

Or, is the oweners I don't like - who never clear up after them or wash them...

JoanofArgos · 26/05/2011 11:25

I imagine dogs wouldn't taste very nice, being carnivores mainly?

mousymouse · 26/05/2011 11:27

maybe you have to feed them oats for a week before slaughtering? just like one would do with other animals that would taste disgusting otherwise?

Vallhala · 26/05/2011 11:28

Yep, I have tethers. He was here last night, taking details about the new Dog Whisperer. :o

knitted, to balance your comments, my friend's wolf hybrid is as gentle as a lamb and extremely biddable, normally off-lead but at heal by her owner.

Someone DID try luring her away once.

Lets just say that the lurer soon realised what a big mistake they'd made... although the dog was as good as gold.

Vallhala · 26/05/2011 11:29

At "heal"??? HEEL, HEEL, FGS! The dog walks close to her owner, she is not a miracle curer!

Al0uiseG · 26/05/2011 11:30

The only meat eating animal I can think of that we eat are pigs. Lots of cultures don't eat pigs, maybe that's why?

JoanofArgos · 26/05/2011 11:30

Oh maybe mousy, yes....
Can you imagine a dog abbatoir - the outrage!

DooinMeCleanin · 26/05/2011 11:31

Dogs are not eaten because they have always had a use to us. They started out as hunting companions, it would be a tad silly to eat the things that helps you catch your dinner wouldn't it? Grin

Al0uiseG · 26/05/2011 11:33

Have you seen the Horizon programme where dogs are shown to be responsible for the rapid evolution of humans? It's amazing.

mousymouse · 26/05/2011 11:34

yes, but what about the old ones that can't hunt for us anymore? or the eccess from a litter? and in asia they are bred and eaten...

cows are incredibly cute too, just look at their big eyes and georgeous eye lashes :)

JoanofArgos · 26/05/2011 11:35

True.... can't image a pack of cows hunting down a fox, either.
I'm sure it's true though that the more carnivorous the animal, the less tasty it generally is: hence foxes being uneatable.

buttonmoon78 · 26/05/2011 11:38

And why there's such a big deal made about grass fed beef. Though I can't get my head around that - I mean surely it's the cow that's fed grass? A bit late once it's steak Wink

Vallhala · 26/05/2011 11:39

Yes, mousy, cows are. They're part of the reason that I'm vegan.

To condone a third world style, ignorant, retarded and sickening practice of eating a cow is, I agree with you, just as barbaric as eating a dog.

MovingToABetterPlaceAtLast · 26/05/2011 11:43

As I just said on the other thread:

I'd love to know where all you dog haters live, because, in all my years of dog owning, I've NEVER met any of you!!

I've never met anyone out on a walk who doesn't like dogs. I've never had anyone complain about my dogs and I've never had anyone come to my house and tell ask me to put them in another room.

Or maybe I'm thick skinned and just don't notice these people?

JoanofArgos · 26/05/2011 11:43

And corn fed chicken!

Well, how the tables have been turned on this thread!

hephaestus · 26/05/2011 12:15

Tethersend, an occupational hazard of husky ownership is that one is at all times covered in a sufficient quantity of husky hair as to be able to pass as one. Grin

Val, the dog's name doesn't begin with N by any chance? There are a very few genuine ones over here.

Overcooked · 26/05/2011 12:17

Not to hijack but could I ask all you dog owners something?

I have a toddler (18 months) who loves dogs and as our childminder has a dog she is (generally) very gentle, does not pull tails etc. Now I would always ask an owner if they mind her touching their dog and if they agree then I let her. As a dog owner would you be annoyed that I let her (after asking) or do you think that as long as I get your consent then it's ok?

Just wondering, there seem to be a few people here that don't like kids around their dogs - just wondering best protocol?

Ormirian · 26/05/2011 12:19

overcooked - I don't own a dog atm but I always tell my DC to ask first and only approach dog if owner says it's OK.

knittedbreast · 26/05/2011 12:20

my aunties dog is not allowed near any other dogs as it just rips them to shreds :(

i have no idea why she keeps trying to brink it over here, she puts in the back of her van and drives it here, but it cant walked because its so dangerous.

DooinMeCleanin · 26/05/2011 12:20

I don't mind so long as we are walking and I am not in the middle of trying to train something specific. The difference is usually pretty clear.
