Honest to god, I'm no stalker, but in a thread I was reading, someone let something slip (something to do with where I live), and I did a quick google, and the person is quite prominent in a certain field. That person is a regular poster, and now I feel quite strange that I know who they are in RL.

Now I'm on a bus yesterday, and I see the person walking along the street. I didn't go out to find a particular person, it just almost happenened (apart from the one google).

AIBU to point out how easy we might be identifiable?

Tbh I am not that bothered if anyone on here knows me. I only write rambling musings on facebook anyway. What exactly is going to happen with someone knowing who you are? Rob my house?

GypsyMoth · 24/05/2011 09:48

what have we got to hide??

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 24/05/2011 09:50

I think some people couldn't care less. Most of us know never to give or reveal more of ourselves than we can afford to lose.

Bennifer · 24/05/2011 09:51

I don't really think it's a problem (it's just if people don't want to be identified). I've no idea whether my stalkee wants to be identified. I was just shocked when I did, and made me careful of what I said on here

Yes I (we) might be identified, but so what?
Are you going to camp outside my front garden?

nijinsky · 24/05/2011 09:51

One of the joys of now working for yourself is that you get to express your own opinions, free of the threat of possible censure from an employer.

mrsbunnthebaker · 24/05/2011 09:51

dons tin foil hat just in case

Bucharest · 24/05/2011 09:51

No shit Sherlock.

BooyHoo · 24/05/2011 09:54

guess what. people in RL have also identified me too. they know my name and where i live. i have survived thus far.

Hassled · 24/05/2011 09:57

I think if I were you and had inadvertently identified someone like that, I'd PM them to tell them. Then they have the choice to namechange if they want.

But you have to accept that people care to wildly differing degrees - I would really rather not be identified in RL, and so post most personal stuff on Chat so it disappears after a while (although I've probably let enough slip over the years); other people have photos on their profiles and obviously don't mind.

upahill · 24/05/2011 09:58

If you know me and you are in Haigh Park this afternoon or at Pennington Flash tomorrow morning give me a wave or come over and say Hi.
I will be with some kids from a special needs school but honestly it would be nice for someone to say they were a fellow MN.

I will have a black Berhaus jacket on!

crazynanna · 24/05/2011 10:02

If anyone is in the Holloway area of London...i am the fat bird who thinks she is 19!Grin

Geepers · 24/05/2011 10:05

Someone identified me on Saturday. Not from here, but from my blog, and she told me that she has been following the progress of my twins from when they were born and feels like she almost knows them. I thought it was lovely, and was nice to meet someone who actually reads our blog.

Jux · 24/05/2011 10:37

I was posting about a very sensitive thing once, and someone asked me a question which showed that they knew exactly who I was. She was kind enough to identify herself to me privately so we were both in the same position. On the whole, though, we don't really meet on here (or even in RL, though we do kind of know each other).

I felt a bit sick at first, but she's clearly a person of integrity. To some people, anonymity here is very important. Personally I'd use the message poster button and let her know who you are in return. She can then change names if she wants to.

You might become great friends!

confuddledDOTcom · 24/05/2011 11:02

I was at antenatal class and when we broke into groups to discuss something one of the ladies said "I have to say this you're confuddledDOTcom aren't you? I'm ..." not only that but she works with my mum!

I think the six degrees of separation is a lot smaller than that!

ScousyFogarty · 24/05/2011 11:03

crazananna...your post gave me a welcome belly laugh.

I dont live in London now; but years ago I lived in Finsbury Park area.

This thread is about one aspect of being known. Another one is about what branch of the authorities could know us. (thats tricky.)

PS footie. I knew it was Ronnie Biggs all the time.

seedlessgrape · 24/05/2011 11:04

runs in, hides, and decides to delete profile before anyone can identify me........

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 24/05/2011 11:12

Should any m/netter wish to keep their RL identity under wraps may I recommend my solicitors, Messrs WritsRus @gagsunlimited.com

For the very reasonable sum of £150,000 plus Court fees, disbursements, and sundry expenses, I am now the proud possessor of a jolly sooper injunction which gurantees that my name will not become public knowledge or associated with any of my affairs.

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 24/05/2011 11:13

'guarantees' no less

crazynanna · 24/05/2011 11:14

ScousyFogarty Me too...lives In Finsbury Park!

It's coming up in the world these days...we now have a boulangerie on our road, right next to the £1 chicken shop Wink

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 24/05/2011 11:18

I dont care, I am not overly interesting and I doubt anyone gives a fig who I am!!

So, if anyone lives in Leigh I am the mad blonde woman who is always either spinning away on a bike or swinging round a pole! Grin

ScousyFogarty · 24/05/2011 11:20

Crazynanna.....I used to go to the Finsburk Park Empire. Which may well be a supermarket now. I saw a lot of pop stars of the time there. This was some time ago. I am older than most mumsnetters

I will write more about this on another day

NerfHerder · 24/05/2011 11:20

crazynanna- you made me LOL, and I'd love to see you walking around Holloway! You sound fab. Grin

AbsDuCroissant · 24/05/2011 11:21

So you mean, people in RL will find out that I spend a lot of time talking crap? Shock

oh wait ...

crazynanna · 24/05/2011 11:27

ScousyFogarty Grin It is now a UKCG pentecostal church!

NerfHerder Well, you may find it hard to spot me...there are loads of fat birds who think they are 19 in Holloway (area..not prison) Grin
