to have named my baby Hermione?

I think it is a very pretty name, and I am a dork like the character association with it from the books, a strong clever female that my DD can read about. Even though it is a classical name it feels more modern and I assumed because of the films at least would be pronoucable to most people.

However, since my baby was born I have had one person manage to say what a pretty name and not act like I had told them my beutiful baby girl was actually called Shit Head or Arse Face.

I mean no one can pronounce it, a few people manage to choke out "how interesting" or "oh" . One woman even turned to her husband, stopped a second and then said "thats a 'special' name" the way you might say "thats a 'special' picture, what is it?" to a child.

One woman who had a baby called TyShawn had the nerve to look horrified.

Thew few people who seem to recognise the name seem horrified by the fact that Hermione is a character name. It was a name long before the books and people forget Wendy was a made up name for Peter Pan. No one soley links the two together anymore do they?

SO AIBU should have named her Evie, or Lily? Will she hate me for years to come?

I think you will find she will grow into it Wink but not the easiest name in kindergarten. Lovely as a grown up though.

googoomama · 23/05/2011 21:18

Lovely name. By the way op, have you got this name because you read a thread about someone shitting in their sock in a changing room? Just wondering, cos that post made me laugh til I nearly shit in a sock too...

SmallSherryforMedicinal · 23/05/2011 21:19

It's a very beautiful name, it's one I like more and more, and I wish I'd given it more consideration when choosing our dd's name. Mind you, here in Ireland people are if anything even less inclined to disguise their displeasure at any kind of 'bookish' names.

Hermione is so beautiful.

cannydoit · 23/05/2011 21:42

my friend just called her baby ebeneezer ...ahem

RubyGrace17 · 23/05/2011 21:44

It's a really lovely name, one I was aware of well before HP :) Ruby

Bearcrumble · 23/05/2011 21:46

It's a fine name, and a lot better than all the cutsey ones like Kitty, Millie, Hetty etc.

SockShitter · 23/05/2011 23:11

Thanks guys :)

googoomama yes it was. Can you imagine the implications of having that name if I hadn't read that thread? Shock Grin

Hermione is a beautiful name, really lovely.

TyShawn is a stupid name.

Er, can I just check, is Evie a really crappy name then?

SockShitter · 24/05/2011 01:32

I don't think its a crappy name at all, actually I think it's quite pretty. WHat I meant was is that it is in the top 10 baby names and people can pronounce it!

TyShawn ??? TyShawn ????!!!!!!!!!!!
Are they wannabe gangstas ??
and they have the nerve to be horrified by hermione !

kiwimumof2boys · 24/05/2011 01:48

Oh and sorry Hermione is a lovely name too.
Always liked it, also Niamh (for the poster who had a daughter with that name.)
Unfortunately, I can't really call either of my 2 sons either of those names . . . borders on child abuse . . .

tooworried · 24/05/2011 01:58

Please tell me how you pronounce it as I've never come across one before. I think all the Harry Potter fans will be the only ones that get it correct? (have never seen any of the films)

Dreya · 24/05/2011 02:09

I didn't think of Harry Potter. Or Shakespeare. I thought of Hermione Norris! OP some people cannot pronounce my DD's name either. I never like to say when I think a name is really awful because I know how that feels. But. TyShawn is truly...not nice. Hermione is beautiful.

southofthethames · 24/05/2011 02:10

Hermione (pronounced "her-my-oh-nee") is lovely, existed long before Harry Potter books (a few Enid Blyton characters, and of course the actress Hermione Norris). British people should be able to pronounce Hermione!!!

I couldn't pronounce Niamh, Siobhan correctly when I was little because I hadn't met an Irish person then, but now I like those names.

TyShawn = oh dear. Hope the child grows up to be very tolerant!

southofthethames · 24/05/2011 02:15

Sorry, tooworried - wasn't meaning that I thought you were wrong not to be able to pronounce the name. What I meant was that anyone educated in Britain should not think Hermione is unpronounceable or odd because it is part of the nation's heritage, like Shakespeare, Marlowe, Agatha Christie, etc. Hermione is Greek in origin but appeared ages ago in Shakespeare's play "A Winter's Tale". So I think we can say it's been in the English language long enough, like Sophia or Helen. Not like we're asking them to pronounce a foreign language name.

MollyMurphy · 24/05/2011 04:26

Someone with a baby named TyShawn had the nerve to give you a funny look?

I like your DD name and agree - it will be neat to have a fun and clever character with the same moniker. I am surprised people can't pronounce it in view of the popularity of the books.

bidibidi · 24/05/2011 05:13

Even I can pronounce it, in spite of being foreign & the MNer who normally dismisses a lot of names as too difficult to say.
5 to one OP calls her next daughter something like... "Jane" Wink.

CareyFakes · 24/05/2011 07:00

I love that name, my daughter shares the same name as a Harry Potter character (I'm a big big fan, but not that big to name my daughter after the character, just coincidence).

JanMorrow · 24/05/2011 07:20

It's a gorgeous name. The people you've met so far are clearly idiots don't worry.

setara · 24/05/2011 07:57

its a lovely name, its one of my names on my list, some people are just rude, i remember one old guy asking my DDs name (Autumn), and then saying "oh she won't thank you for that when she's being bullied at school"

Just wish i had been able to say "oh thats nothing i know somebody that named their kid TyShawn"

oh well maybe next time :o

streakybacon · 24/05/2011 08:20

I know a Hermione, and she's my favourite little girl in the world Grin.

Lovely name, great choice.

LordOfTheFlies · 24/05/2011 08:30

Lovely name, my DD looks very like Ms Granger in the early HP films.Lots of people comment. She's got the hair, the eyes and the attitude!
Probably not legal to pencil it into her birth certificate........

Psammead · 24/05/2011 08:36

It's a lovely name! Sure there are strong associations with tge character now, but that will wear off by the time your DD is old enough to care. Very nice! Sou obviously have only met idiots.

IWantAnotherBaby · 24/05/2011 08:37

Hermione is a beautiful name and one of my favourites. I wasn't allowed it for DD though as DH wasn't keen (nothing to do with HP which we considered utterly irrelevant). So she is Phoebe. Next time, if there is one, I will be fighting for Hermione (or Persephone; although that really will be an uphill struggle).

Psammead · 24/05/2011 08:39

Iwantanotherbaby I like your taste in names.

Do you like Penelope, too? I think I might try to get DH to love it.
