to have named my baby Hermione?

I think it is a very pretty name, and I am a dork like the character association with it from the books, a strong clever female that my DD can read about. Even though it is a classical name it feels more modern and I assumed because of the films at least would be pronoucable to most people.

However, since my baby was born I have had one person manage to say what a pretty name and not act like I had told them my beutiful baby girl was actually called Shit Head or Arse Face.

I mean no one can pronounce it, a few people manage to choke out "how interesting" or "oh" . One woman even turned to her husband, stopped a second and then said "thats a 'special' name" the way you might say "thats a 'special' picture, what is it?" to a child.

One woman who had a baby called TyShawn had the nerve to look horrified.

Thew few people who seem to recognise the name seem horrified by the fact that Hermione is a character name. It was a name long before the books and people forget Wendy was a made up name for Peter Pan. No one soley links the two together anymore do they?

SO AIBU should have named her Evie, or Lily? Will she hate me for years to come?

Then again my eldest is called Tanisha, you should here the comments we get, and people trying to say it is funny.
I think its a beutiful name and give it ten years no one will remeber its HP link Grin

it's gorgeous. My grandmother's best friend was called Hermione, she was Scottish and it sounded beautiful in her accent. She was called 'Mione' (pronounced M-eye-a-nee) for short which I think is pretty pretty pretty

I know somebody who has a Harry and a Hermione Smile

Hermione is a great Shakespearean name.

MintyMoo · 23/05/2011 18:49

Hermione is a beautiful name, great taste :) My Latin and Classics teacher at school had a DD called Hermione, always liked the name.

Beautiful name, I love it. I agree that the parents of 'TyShawn' will clearly not appreciate a classic, elegant name like Hermione...
I taught in a lovely, well-to-do senior school for many years and there were quite a few girls named Hermione. Also many Alices, Sophies, Daisys, plus a few Marinas and Gabriellas!

HeadfirstForHalos · 23/05/2011 18:51

TyShawn "snigger"

slinkyboo · 23/05/2011 18:51

...and no TyShawns!

SockShitter · 23/05/2011 18:53

Galois, what do you think about your DS and my dd meeting up in about 18 years Grin

.. until a poster comes on here and asks whether she's BU for calling her DS 'TyShawn'... Wink

redexpat · 23/05/2011 18:59

Lovely! Also wonderful to have a clever headstrong brave (albeit fictional) character to associate her name with. Assuming your last name isn't Grainger? Because I think that might be a step too far... Grin

excellentadventure · 23/05/2011 19:00

what books?

SockShitter · 23/05/2011 19:00

LWITW Yes, I admit I have made poor TyShawn a whipping boy, but I at least had the manners to not grimace when told his name! Grin

No not Granger... although I can admit my surname is ridiculous.

I agree with the other posters who've asked why you are taking notice of a woman who has called her baby TyShawn Hmm. Lovely name that, timeless, won't age at all - oh no, wait, it's shite.

Hermione is a lovely name (and I'm not even a Harry Potter fan!) Grin.

emmanumber3 · 23/05/2011 19:08

LyingWitch - and then everyone will probably say "yes, it's cruel - change it to Rufus" Hmm.

hoofhearted · 23/05/2011 19:09

It's lovely. A new classic.

Bumperlicioso · 23/05/2011 19:13

Galois, I didn't realise Wulfric was an homage to HP! We may just be kindred spirits Grin (assuming I have the right person...) I wanted Hermione too but DH said no.

dixiechick1975 · 23/05/2011 19:18

DH's 30 something sister is called this.

I would have thought more people could pronounce it with HP popularity.

She gets called 'My' or 'my - on - ee' for short.

shortround · 23/05/2011 19:21

I think it's a beautiful name, a lady from toddler group I think was paticularly brave she named her daughter Hermione, 9 years ago. She fell in love with the name when she read the first book.

JuicyLips · 23/05/2011 19:24

I love the name Hermione. Its beautiful.

Melonballs · 23/05/2011 19:29

At the end of the day as long as you and your DH love it that's all that matters. I have given my DD an unusual name and over the years everyone has felt the need to comment. Not always positively lol. DD loves it and is very confident. I think her name has helped make her strong.
For what it's worth I love Hermione.....I always think of the actor Hermione Granger whom I think epitomises grace and charm. A beautiful name.

ledkr · 23/05/2011 19:30

Lovely name and congratulations. I recently called my baby Delilah I have also had some fairly rude remarks actually,"poor little mite" OR "oh she will love you" I have now stopped defending it we love it and it suits her,i now opt for the long hard stare at any negative remarks, make them unconfortable.

microserf · 23/05/2011 20:53

It is a lovely name, and one she'll be proud of. I adore it. And I named my DS after my favourite character in a Terry Pratchett novel, so I could never judge anyway!
