to have named my baby Hermione?

I think it is a very pretty name, and I am a dork like the character association with it from the books, a strong clever female that my DD can read about. Even though it is a classical name it feels more modern and I assumed because of the films at least would be pronoucable to most people.

However, since my baby was born I have had one person manage to say what a pretty name and not act like I had told them my beutiful baby girl was actually called Shit Head or Arse Face.

I mean no one can pronounce it, a few people manage to choke out "how interesting" or "oh" . One woman even turned to her husband, stopped a second and then said "thats a 'special' name" the way you might say "thats a 'special' picture, what is it?" to a child.

One woman who had a baby called TyShawn had the nerve to look horrified.

Thew few people who seem to recognise the name seem horrified by the fact that Hermione is a character name. It was a name long before the books and people forget Wendy was a made up name for Peter Pan. No one soley links the two together anymore do they?

SO AIBU should have named her Evie, or Lily? Will she hate me for years to come?

Hermione is a lovely name.

Crashing - my DD's middle name is May which is when she should have been born, I still called her it even though she was early in the end. April is a very pretty name too but didn't go with her first name.

msrisotto · 23/05/2011 18:31

Is Tyshawn pronounced Tie - Shorn(ish) ? Shock

GwendolineMaryLacey · 23/05/2011 18:31

Lovely name. They are ignorant arses.

scarlettsmummy2 · 23/05/2011 18:32

I am expecting again and it is one of the names I have shortlisted. I think it is lovely.

crashingwaves · 23/05/2011 18:32

Thanks! :) I just love the name April, it has always made me think of clear spring skies, baby lambs and bunnies, daffodils and just sounds fresh and pretty and I love it.

I just get grunted at "why didn't you call her October?" BECAUSE I LIKE THE NAME APRIL, NUMPTY! :D

SockShitter · 23/05/2011 18:33

Tie Sean, basically. Like you wrote but with out the R

So if posters say YABU, OP, are you going to change it? Confused

If you like it, then you obviously think it's lovely and it's your DD so who cares. Everybody likes different names.

SockShitter · 23/05/2011 18:37

No defintly not seeing things that aren't there, this is mostly from strangers who stop to talk to the baby. We live in a very friendly talk to your neighbour kind of place and get stopped at least 5 times a day.

my friends however are very ill mannered though and told me I wasn't allowed to name her Hermione from the start Grin we tend to be horrible to each other that way though so its acceptable.

pirateparty · 23/05/2011 18:38

It's lovely - congratulations on your dd!

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 23/05/2011 18:39

I'm sure "Oktoberina" or something that sounds like it was very popular in Russia at one point due to some political thing (I did listen in history class honestly!)

galois · 23/05/2011 18:40

I love it. It was on my very short shortlist, and DS1 would have been Hermione had he been female. As would DS2. Lucky you. What a lovely name, and what a lucky girl.

SockShitter · 23/05/2011 18:40

No can't change, it just wondered who thinks I am unreasonable for giving my kid a "weird" name from the annomous safety of the internet. ALso been nice to have some people tell me they like it Blush since I don't hear that often.

I had the same reaction to DD's name. I went with it. Her name is Niamh.
A real name, a real spelling and not that odd, but people did think to seem it was mad.
My brother's second child was born earlier this year, they named her Eilidh. When my Dad told me the name he said, 'It's one of those odd names with too many letters and doesn't look right'. Oh Dad, like Niamh then?
He changed the subjectGrin

SockShitter · 23/05/2011 18:41

Could have named one of them Harry galois Grin

I think it is BEAUTIFUL. It is such a gorgeous, pretty poetic word

And the literary links are pretty cool too

And Hermione Norris is very beautiful and talented actress too.

So take no notice of the naysayers - you did good :o

SockShitter · 23/05/2011 18:42

People love to pull disgusted faces at the sounds of an unusual baby name - just ignore it. You love the name and that is what is most important! Too many women get brow-beaten into picking bog standard boring names to please others and it isn't fair... stay proud of your decision. I think it is a lovely name despite not liking HP... and the actress who played her seems a beautiful, intelligent girl...

worraliberty · 23/05/2011 18:43

I really don't like it at all.

Then again, no-one's every going to pick a name that absolutely everyone likes.

5inthebed · 23/05/2011 18:43

I think it is a lovely name.

I now an August, she was born in the same month though.

Ariesgirl · 23/05/2011 18:46

Great name, great character, a good strong name. Congratulations!

TyShawn What a shit name! Poor little blighter.

diabolo · 23/05/2011 18:46

I love it.

How can anyone NOT pronounce it properly? Where have they been living for the last 12 years?
