non military scouts?

Hiya was wondering if anyone knew if there was a non military version of the scouts that exists at all for little boys of about 5/6?

I thought that Scouts was non military? What you are on about is the Army Cadets.

Beavers used to be just for little gilrs so if you have a little boy the cubs would be better but I cannot remember the age groups.

Woodcraft Folk? left leaning and definitely not militarian or royalist. I want my son to go, but there aren't any near us.

Depends where you are and what you want? I grew up by the sea, we had a choice between sea scouts, sea cadets, and a local youth club who did everything the other two groups did but with a heavily Christian influence.... have to say my brother was involved in all of them, loved them all and isn't now either Christian or a soldier.

I had no idea they were military based, they are a multi faith organisation. Are you sure about them being military?

If they are, it is not remotely evident at my ds's cub group.

Beavers/scouts/cubs are a Christian based organisation aren't they? I know they do church parades etc., but haven't ever seen anything remotely military, more old school regimentation at times but certainly not overtly military.

Sorry but Scouts have nothing to do with military. I used to go when i was younger and left to join the Army Cadets because thats what I wanted to do as a career. Not sure where you have got the idea from. Next you will say the DofE is also military

Beavers is part of the scout movement for the youngest children (6-8 year olds). They also admit girls as do Cubs and Scouts. Cubs is for boys aged 8-10 and Scouts for those aged 10+. I really wouldn't describe any of these organisations as "military". The nearest they may get would be when they go on camping trips or do a spot of map reading.

There's boys brigade, but I'm not sure how young they go, and from what I can tell they are much more religious than scouts.

Based on the military ideas yes, I'd go with that, but they're not a military organisation.

He'd better not get a Saturday job with Micky D's in the future, then - they have a uniform and insignia too. Gold star for every ten enemy soldiers garrotted, that's what I heard.

It has moved away from the military image but that was what it was based on originally. Marching about a lot, having ranks, wearing a uniform, church based stuff, etc

sorry when i said military its because they are based on regiment etc and yes they do all have a mild christian influence too. i found it in the end its woodcraft folk, but thank you those who answered!

I'd say it's the other way round! Faith is an intrinsic part of the Promise.

It was never a formal military organisation, and the military influence has dropped away now.

Out of interest, why would you not want your child to go to a group that was loosely based on the military such a long time ago?

OP- Woodcraft folk and maybe Badgers would fit your request I guess.

Woodcraft and badgers both have expections that you and your child will fit into the group activities and timetable. Both are Co-ed at age 5/6

Beavers is pretty informal and doesn't appear military to my eyes tho, so if Beavers is all that is on offer in your area why not try it out.

because i was looking for the alternative group! not really into the military at all and just wanted to find the group that did simialr things like camping etc
