It's obvious that the op's initial choice of wording got the backs up of a lot of people with very positive experiences of what Scouting offers to our children, who felt the op completely misunderstood how these organisations are run and appeared obdurate in his or her view on this.

knittedbreast - i dont keep revertin g it back to hippy based.

My last post i said at first i thought the Woodfolk was some type of group based around old folk lore etc until I googled it and it became apparent that it wasn't

I then said that it would be a good group to create, something based purly on fun, old folklore and magical mystical creatures.

It pisses me off too. I object very strongly to my child being taught Christianity as fact and that you have to "opt out' of Christian collective worship in a state school. Not a Church school - just a state primary school.

ANd before anyone asks, I have no objection to children being taught about faith at school. I think they should be taught about Christianity and about all the other faiths that people follow. I just don't think they should have to practice a particuar faith in order to participate fully in a State education.

cook, it dousnt piss me off when he talks about god it pisses me off that he only seems to refer to jesus as god, thats hes been taught (in the most basic sense)christianity. i would much rather they say, "its christmas time, christians celebrate this time of year as the birth of jesus son of god", however in the islamic faith jesus or esa (bad sp) is also very important as he is beleived to be a prophet..etc...

i have no problems with him talking about god, he knows mummy believes i would jut rather is was taght as people x beleive this and the alternative offered.

Hands up who else had to google obdurate!! I did, i am not very good with big words but I will try and drop this new word into conversations. Grin

Scholes34 · 23/05/2011 12:16

Had to do the same when a resident used it in a letter to my boss when I worked for a local authority, and try to use it whenever I can!

MrSpoc · 23/05/2011 12:17

Ha ha Scholes34, i like your style.

Scholes34 · 23/05/2011 12:19

Perhaps we could have a new heading for threads - Am I being obdurate?

glastocat · 23/05/2011 12:24

I've just remembered one thing about the Woodcraft folk. A load of them do voluntary work in the beer tents at Glastonbury. I worked with them many years ago, and they definitely were pretty hippy alternative (and nothing wrong with that)

ill win everytime. Smile

You aren't allowed to be a Scout (/Cub/Beaver) leader if you admit to being an atheist, though.

Punkatheart · 23/05/2011 15:57

I ran a brownie group for two years but I never did my promise. That was because I did not want to swear loyalty to God and The Queen...so yes, that part is true...

Wow, this got a bit daft didn't it?

The Scout Association is nowadays very far removed from the original military style basis and I am not sure why people are getting upset about the fact.

Organisations change and so long as the children's interests come first, it shouldn't be knocked. Every thing has a history.

When i was a youngun i went to Girls Brigade (fucking awful) Guides (ditto) Woodcraft Folk (even more religious ime than Scouting/Guiding) and Scouts.

I was the first female Beaver Cub in Greater London North. Smile

Go for Scouts, it was the only one i stuck with, and im a rebel without a cause.

takethisonehereforastart · 23/05/2011 17:53

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts aren't military but they do have a Christian influence to them.

Rainbows, Brownies and Guides are the girls versions of them, although girls have started joining Beavers etc now.

Nixea · 23/05/2011 17:58

Actually, after a bit more research, I have to say that Woodland Folk would give me cause for concern.

Parades and religion in our Cub pack: once a year for St. George's Day. We join up with the other groups in the district and a rather long, shambolic stream of people walk along to a jolly tune (never a military tune - I think it was something like "a life on the ocean wave" this year - no idea why) to the local church for a 30 minute service. Then we shamble back. No saluting, no "marching", just a walk. The kids love it because they like finding out that they are part of a much bigger organisation.

The nearest we get to anything "military" is an annual water pistol fight at the end of camp! Smile

I don't go anywhere near the two activity badges that focus on religion - the kids get that chucked at them in shed-loads at school and it would bore them witless to do it at Cubs. And to correct an earlier post, Scouts is not a Christian organisation. There are Muslim Scout Groups in some parts of the country, and Scout Groups in many predominantly non-Christian countries - the Middle East, India ...

OP, I hope the Woodcraft folk works out for your son, but if not, look again at Cubs - it truly isn't what you may have assumed.

Waltons · 23/05/2011 18:29

Blimey - I never knew this - from wikipedia: "The Woodcraft Folk are members of the Stop the War Coalition and affiliated to the National Peace Council, the Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) and work closely with many local CND branches."

Not sure I'll be doing nuclear disarmament with the Cubs in the near future. Hmm

nzshar · 23/05/2011 19:25

OMGDS goes to beavers he is going to become a live for war gun handling feind whatever shall I do ...this has to be the most bizarre thread I have read. Total misrepresentation of the scout movement I have ever heard of Hmm
