I posted previously to establish whether it was U to put a wedding on a credit card if it was under £1k. The reasoning behind it is that MIL has terminal cancer and we want to do it quickly while she can enjoy the day with us.

Despite us living together for years and years and having DC he wanted to do it properly so we got a ring (I never wear rings but it's actually so nice :)) and told everyone.

We want to do it soon - he says within 6 months, I think sooner the better as poor MIL now has balance problems due to the cancer :(. So, we'll have family only, less than 20 people, for a ceremony with a registrar then a meal. We're doing it in DP's home town to save MIL having to travel, and so I'll need to think about logistics because we live 300 miles away. And we also have a BF baby and a 4 year old DS to think about. Oh and I'm a proper chubster so I'm dreading having to sort out a dress.

Haven't been to a wedding myself for 15 years so I don't know what's expected. I'm pretty laid back about the whole thing but there are already a lot of compromises for me due to the circumstances - which I am completely happy to make because MIL is thrilled about this, but I would prefer not to be swept along with the family organising everything. So I'd love your ideas and suggestions for cheap ways to make it a lovely special day for everyone involved.

Have a fantastic day!

NorksAreMessy · 21/07/2011 22:34

Hooray, GreenTeapot, there you are! I was just thinking about you today and wondering if you were married yet. Didn't like to pm in case you secretly hated the tiara and were hiding :)

I hope you have the most gorgeous, relaxed, happy and fun day tomorrow. I hope the DC behave beautifully, that your MIL is not too tired, that you enjoy your cream tea, that the sun shines and that one little tiny thing goes just wrong enough to laugh about in years to come, but not too wrong to spoil the day.

NorksAreMessy · 21/07/2011 22:36

...oooh, and will you be kind and pop a picture on your profile in a little while, so we can see you being all bridal and gorgeous?
Go on. Go on. Go on.
You can always take it off again later

RainyAfternoon · 21/07/2011 22:38

oooh how lovely. Enjoy every minute!

Aah Green Teapot. I followed your originalpost. I hope you have a wonderful day, and that you continue on your happy path with your new DH.

Your MIL sounds like a very brave lady and you are doing a wonderful thing for her.

Best of Luck xx

WhoremoaneeGrainger · 21/07/2011 22:43

you look lovely!

Haven't read all the posts but getting friends and family involved is lovely for them, makes it memorable and can save a lot of £ too.

We had:
Family member who made the cake (free)
Marquee decorated by friends, with hanging baskets grown by MIL, bunting made by my mum, a few big pot plants and some cheap coloured tealight lanterns
Homemade placecards made from parcel tags, coloured ribbon and tied to a flower
Little (cheap) fun toys scattered on the tables
Friends doing the church music
Table flowers done by a friend, so we just paid for the materials (got at cost price from flower market)
Invitations made by us on the computer

We have also been to some lovely weddings where the reception was in a marquee in a garden, in some cases with the catering partly done by the family as well. And also still got some good memories of helping at other people's weddings (making buttonholes, preparing salads...).

Also agree with everything lesley33 said!

Congratulations. Looks like you had a great day.

worzelswife · 25/07/2011 13:26

Ah you look beautiful. I'm so glad you had a good day.

So many great ideas on this thread - the best wedding I ever went to was tiny and all the guests made the food together. The brides (civil ceremony) had even made their own wedding dresses. It was all very simple but lots of fun. After the meal, we sat around a huge fire and sang songs. It gave me a lot of inspiration for if I ever get marrried.

Can I just ask, the people who suggest not telling the venue that it's a wedding and booking things as if for a birthday party - don't you risk seriously pissing off the venue by doing that? Wouldn't they demand more money once they twigged?
