Please excuse this moment of bitchiness but Im in a really grumpy mood and I had to get this off my chest. (Baby teething, no sleep,

SIL 'makes' banoffee pie. I say 'makes' because she opens a tin of biscuits, a tin of premade caramel, peels a banana and tops with a carton of cream. VOILA. Ive just received word that she has spent hours doing this and so we are expected to drop everything, go round tonight and sample this canned delight.

Ive no problem with this banoffee method usually, in fact sometimes when i have nothing in the house, I may make it myself. But she proclaims that she makes the best pie shes ever tasted, and knocks all others with 'Yeah, not as good as mine though...'

I hate boasting. Esp when the boasting is about something a ten year old could make. Rant over. Flame me now.

Does she genuinely not know that there's more to making it than that? That she's shortcutting the recipe?

Dropdeadfred · 18/05/2011 14:43

Would she admit to how she makes it though? Or be even more annoying by claiming it to be a secret..?

FairhairedandFrustrated · 18/05/2011 14:45

LOL I thought the same about the chips!! Wink

Quenelle · 18/05/2011 14:45

You can buy tinned caramel?

NerfHerder · 18/05/2011 14:47

Nothing to add but Hahahahahahahaha!

jennymac · 18/05/2011 14:47

My SIL has done the same. Made rice crispy buns and invited us round to taste them (and they were not nice!) and on the odd occasion that she makes anything she takes pictures and posts them on facebook for people to ooh and ahh over! It does irritate me although I can't really work out why - maybe it's because her family over-praises her for the smallest achievements as if she is a four year old!

bullet234 · 18/05/2011 14:52

Maybe it's the way she slices the bananas.

ithaka · 18/05/2011 14:53

I remember my sister's OH telling her his mum made the best yorkshire puddings in the world. Dutifully, my sister asked her MIL for her recipe. Lovely MIL's response was 'I always buy Aunt bessies' - she looked bemused by the suggestion she would actually bother to make yorkies (busy lady, own business, lots of fun).

thefruitwhisperer · 18/05/2011 14:58

Their family do tend to like plain things though. My DP hates my mums stuffing which is made from sausage meat and all kinds of herbs in favour of his mums stuffing. Which is Paxo and water. Yum! Wink

Im tempted to go with ILTiffanys's suggestion!

I made some apple tarts a few weekends ago and took some round to my elderly neighbours who are sick ...next time I saw them they went on and on about how amazing the pastry was and could they have the recipe...I had to sheepishly admit it was a Jus roll from a packet Blush

Quenelle · 18/05/2011 15:01

If I had made a delicious pudding there's no way I'd be asking the inlaws round to scoff it.

Abelia · 18/05/2011 15:01

YASoNBU. I made choc cake for ds's birthday and did tell people that it was delicious as all I did was put ingredients in a mixer then pour them into a baking tin. (obv I told people that it was that easy, didn't just say oh yeah it's so delicious clearly I'm a culinary genius)

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 18/05/2011 15:01

lol at banoffee ting

I have Jimmy Cliffe going through my mind.

I love Jimmy Cliffe, me. Not so sure about banoffee pie though.

The tinned caramel - does she use dulce de leche (sp)?

Erm, YANBU op. It would wind me up a treat.

ithaka your MIL sounds fab.

ObiWan · 18/05/2011 15:02

Are you going there tonight?
Will you come back and let us know what you said?? All of MN will be behind you, urging on your passive-aggressive performance Grin.
It could be like Pom-Bears all over again!

saidthespiderwithahorridsmile · 18/05/2011 15:02

ok find out what brands she is using

then make an identical one and take it round when you go to sample hers

say "I didn't want us to run out so I just botched something together with cheap tinned stuff"

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 18/05/2011 15:03

Good grief that was a stream of conciousness.

And it's Jimmy Cliff with no 'e'

I blame the banoffe ting.

thefruitwhisperer · 18/05/2011 15:04

Ooooooooh could I really make my own one! Or is that too mean?!

OP posts:
ObiWan · 18/05/2011 15:05

Do it! Ask her to let you know where you're going wrong Grin

thefruitwhisperer · 18/05/2011 15:06

But on the other hand, I do have some bananas going off that need using....

OP posts:
sofaqueenie · 18/05/2011 15:07

No flaming from me - YANBU

bronze · 18/05/2011 15:07

My two points have already been made
I didn't know you could buy tinned caramel
and
if I made something theres f all chance I'm sharing it, it's bad enough with a household of gannets

stillfrazzled · 18/05/2011 15:09

Please please do the identical one thing! Please!

Love this thread. Grin

CadleCrap · 18/05/2011 15:10

I make a banoffe pie the same way as your SIL - I DO think it is nicer than ones you get in restaurants.

Abelia · 18/05/2011 15:19

Is it just the banoffee pie she is so proud of? Or any other culinary delights to boast about?

I can imagine her INCREDIBLE Cheese On Toast; almost as good as her EXTRAORDINARY Jacket Potato With Beans ...

... or perhaps this difficult fruit salad busycooks.about.com/od/sidefruitsalads/r/cocfruitsalad.htm which the website actually suggests "serving in ice cream cones for a treat to raise spirits"

Abelia · 18/05/2011 15:20

gah complicated fruit salad
