To wonder why people let themselves get fat?

I am frequently amazed at the number of women at 15/17/20 stone who suddenly realise how fat they are and want to do something about it.
Why do people let themselves get so fat? It's unhealthy, unsightly and very life limiting.
Why not just keep an eye on your weight and keep it nice and steady?

I don't like exercise that much. I walk the kids to school a few days. I can do a spinning class. or swim. but exercise is not a love for me.And I love chips and crisps. more than salad. But my arteries are o.k. I think. I have no blood pressure issues, or cholestrol, or anyhting else for that matter. As far as I know. They do extensive blood tests on me, bi-annually, so I think I would know if my liver, cholestrol or blood pressure was a problem.

I didn't really think I was particularly healthy living until I went on this thread. I still eat chocolate and crisps so I am not very rigidly so. But once you have good habits in place, its easier to stick to them. To me, going out for a run is a bit like brushing my teeth, its something I do every day and its no great ordeal or big deal.

If you have bad habits then its going to take some motivation to replace them with good ones. You have to find out what motivation works for you. For me it is competition and I also find my sporty friends help keep me motivated. David's Girl you seem motivated by talking about what you do, so it might be that doing group activites, joining a sports club or using a personal trainer might be the things that work for you, since you can socialise afterwards and discuss your experiences. Just a thought.

It's usually how to spot a troll while they are still warming up and establishing posting history bling.

Either resurrecting Zombie threads with content-light posts, or baby names or both. So I mistook you for one, I'm afraid Smile

I just felt a bit light headed at the thought of this bunfight restarting though Smile

And zombie threads do once they are resurrected.

Ho hum.

blingblingbling · 05/12/2014 05:35

Sowwy lol. Not a troll :)

ArsenicSoup · 05/12/2014 05:38

Ach there hasn't been a fat shaming punch-up for at least five minutes.

I wonder if anyone will fall for it? Smile

blingblingbling · 05/12/2014 05:40

I will let you in on a secret, some people like to be fat! :O

sashh · 05/12/2014 08:12

My weight problems started at primary school.

As a child I was force fed as a punishment.

I suppose I should have never caused myself to be punished, perhaps been a perfect child.

marnia68 · 05/12/2014 08:58

Jill2015 · 05/12/2014 09:03

Zombie thread.

solidussnake · 05/12/2014 09:37

yes you can say it's more on an addiction with some people.
A friend of my mum's could sit and eat 2take aways, 10 bags of crisps and 2, 2l bottles of coke and still be starving. I see it as an addiction like any other in that sense.
but there are people out there who have medical conditions and really can't help it. don't be judgey.

Ilovewheelychairs · 05/12/2014 09:41

It is also very difficult once you are overweight to lose it as you have to eat under the number of calories you actually need per day for a long period of time to lose a large amount of weight. I work 72 hours a week and need my energy. For me, losing weight is incredibly difficult. When I crash in at 10pm having left the house at 7.30am the last thing I want to do is cook a healthy meal. Actually I don't want to eat anything at all because I can't sleep then. It is a lot easier and less effort to buy a prepacked sandwich earlier in the day. And working 72 hours a week I don't have time to exercise. I could get up earlier but then the complete exhaustion makes me ill and aggravates my depression. When I'm depressed I get suicidal. For me, being fat is better than being dead.

andsmileitschristmas · 05/12/2014 09:45

Im one of the 'fat' people you speak of. I dont have a condition of any sort - maybe being greedy at time and making poor food choices.

I have had those moments where I've thought this. But Im doing something about it.

I think a lot more people need to take responsibility for their lifestyle and food choices and face up to the responsibility they owe to themselves to stay healthy. But then if they dont want to be and eat/drink/smoke then I suppose thats their choice but shouldnt complain about it later.

madmomma · 05/12/2014 09:57

I'm about 3 stones overweight. It's because I'm at home all day with young children, near the kitchen. I don't generally manage to feed myself proper meals (the children are fed properly), so when I need energy I grab fatty sugary snacks. I don't get much exercise because I can't make it fit in with what the kids need (if I take them to the park I'm playing with them rather than power-walking because 2 toddlers don't power-walk) So it's lack of self-care caused by overwhelming responsibility for children I guess.
