why does it always seem to be men who have afternoon naps?

My Dad will often have an afternoon nap in an armchair.
My DH will often have a sunday afternoon snooze on the sofa.
My FIL often catches some zzzzz's in his chair, of an afternoon.
BILs have been known to do same.

I was having a chat with friends and they said that their DH's also often have a weekend daytime nap.

Is this just a bloke thing? I have never known my DM, DSis, SIL, girl-friends to fall asleep in the afternoon??

AIBU in thinking this is just a man thing? And why?

I nap daily for 2 hours.

I'm female. (And pregnant, but like to nap anyway). Really not looking forward to the day DD stops having naps.

Gosh, my DH has never napped in all the time I've known him! I used to nap when I was younger, in my Uni days we would have disco naps before going out at night. I can't remember the last time I had a nap :(
Can't remember my own parents ever napping either!

I have had a nap today and have a nap most days with or without my husband being here. He will look after our daughter if he is here if not she goes to sleep with me. I have lies in on the weekend to and I definitely dont think its a man thing.

My mum and most of my female friends take afternoon naps, and we used to do it before having children to.

Also on a weird sleeping thing how come most pensioners seem to get up at the crack of dawn? All ours in the flat block get up about 6am/7am and they have no work. When I am that age I wont be getting up till lunch everyday.

I used to nap with the dcs when they were little, but always felt really dreadful and hungover afterwards.
DH needs a nap at weekend, but he does work long hours and has a long drive to and from work.

Another female napper here - DP (male) never naps but I like nothing more than taking to my bed of a weekend afternoon. I was zonked out for two hours yesterday. 'Twas blissful. Love to doze with the sun streaming through the curtains and the birds all chirping outside.

I've never understood napping.

Back in my pre DD days I could do 2 consecutive all nighters, and work during the day and be exhausted, but still wouldn't want to nap. Although I hated feeling exhausted, I loved waiting for bed at night time.

I had a nap for an hour this afternoon while DS was asleep and DH was gardening. Very nice it was too. I'd have one every day if I had the opportunity. DH is the opposite, he doesn't like "wasting the day"

Othersideofthechannel · 15/05/2011 19:45

I think it's wasting the day if I am in a daze or grumpy from lack of sleep.

i read somewhere that in prehistoric times the men were up at sunrise to go hunting and the women got up later, hence they needed a nap.
