why does it always seem to be men who have afternoon naps?

My Dad will often have an afternoon nap in an armchair.
My DH will often have a sunday afternoon snooze on the sofa.
My FIL often catches some zzzzz's in his chair, of an afternoon.
BILs have been known to do same.

I was having a chat with friends and they said that their DH's also often have a weekend daytime nap.

Is this just a bloke thing? I have never known my DM, DSis, SIL, girl-friends to fall asleep in the afternoon??

AIBU in thinking this is just a man thing? And why?

i love to have an afternoon nap. ds does not want one this afternoon :( and i am feeling really sleepy i have pmt

HubbaHubbaBubba · 15/05/2011 15:31

Well I napped this morning- twice! Woke to BF DS, handed him over to DH and then promptly fell back asleep while DH looked after the three kiddies and made Sunday roast. Woke up as it was being served. Perfick!! :o [smug emoticon]

DH would sleep every afternoon "after a big lunch" if he could, but because I'm the one up in the night BFing our boy, I'm the one that tends to get the naps. Before DCs we'd both nap in the afternoon. bliss.

like the poster above, looking forward to retirement for the opportunities to nap whenever (and wherever?!) :o :o

funnybumblebee · 15/05/2011 15:33

I've always been a napper, only good thing about being pregnant was that no one minded! Now DD is here, far less chance to nap, but I am also looking forward to retirement for that reason!

OddBoots · 15/05/2011 15:35

I think dh and I nep about as often as each other, I napped more when pregnant and when recovering from meningitis but now we each have a weekend nap every few weeks.

LostInTransmogrification · 15/05/2011 15:38

Yesterday I sat next to DH snoring on the couch with DS comfort sucking on my lap for nearly two hours. I was knackered and would have loved a nap but it doesn't seem to be an option got me!

I'm about to go upstairs for a snooze tidy up, and put washing away Wink

We had late lunch/early tea so have just eaten and have just done the dishwasher and tidied up the kitchen, dh is gardening and ds is playing on his xbox...........

sundaydreams · 15/05/2011 15:42

I love a good afternoon nap and I'm definitely not a man. I only set the alarm to wake me to do the afternoon school run! I think I probably wouldn't confess to my friends that I do it though, I prefer to let them thinking I'm fussing about with housework.

Bearcat · 15/05/2011 15:58

I love a little kip in the afternoons too.
Haven't had one for a few weeks though.
It seems to be more of a winter thing for me though. In the house, heating on, maybe the fire going, reading the paper, eyes start to go and I'm off. Sometimes just 20 minutes, ther times an hour or more being totally tired and lazy.
DH never sleeps in the day, but can sometimes doze off in the evening before waking himself up suddenly with a snort ( like last night watching Eurovision scores come in, which I always tease him is his favourite programme of the year!)

alistron1 · 15/05/2011 16:03

I love a nap in the afternoon, as does DP. I think employment law should allow for nap time at work Grin

my dad does this, it's just an excuse to get out of doing the dishes!

Men are lazy b* if you give then half the chance

rainbowinthesky · 15/05/2011 16:13

Neither of us really nap. It's not a "man thing", shudder.

Othersideofthechannel · 15/05/2011 16:23

I don't think it's a gender thing. Like several posters on this thread, I am always aware of what there is to be done too. But I am a morning person. So I get up to get stuff done before the children are awake as it is much quicker. Sometimes that means I need a catch up sleep after lunch while DH washes up and then does something quiet with the children. He enables my nap, I enable his lie in.
I used to nap for a couple of hours on weekends (when BF in the night). Now I do 20 minute power naps. It makes me more efficient and pleasant during my waking hours.

sprinkles77 · 15/05/2011 16:25

i can have a nap, but only in bed. DH can nap on the sofa. My dad naps everywhere. when we were kids we would drive to france or italy. All of a sudden my dad would pull over and tell us all to be quiet, and 2 seconds later would be snoring. 10 minutes later he would wake up, say "oooh that was a lovely little sleep" and off we would go. And this would have been when he was in his 20's!

HubbaHubbaBubba · 15/05/2011 16:27

Love your story about your dad sprinkles - that's brilliant! :o

FreudianSlipper · 15/05/2011 16:30

i used to nap in the toilets at work, set my alarm for aroudn 7 minutes that was enough (only 3 women used 3 toilets so not stinky ones)

when i was pregnant i sed to nap in the first aid room for up to an hour :d

MittzyTheMinx · 15/05/2011 16:44

I can, will and do sleep anytime and anywhere Smile

I always have but more so due to health issues. I sleep better during the day and always wake up very rested and calm. I can't sleep in cars though.

HarrietJones · 15/05/2011 17:37

Dh naps , drives me mad cos he just disappears off and I find him in bed under the clean washing.

I sleep in the car.

Jaspants · 15/05/2011 17:42

I so so wish I could sleep in the day. I can only do it if I am really hungover tired, whereas DH can nap any time any place.

QuincyMincemeat · 15/05/2011 17:44

dh will not nap. He goes to bed at 8 o'clock instead Angry
I, however, could sleep pegged out on washing line!

troisgarcons · 15/05/2011 17:51

I always nap on a Saturday afternoon, but then, thats when I catch up on my sleep .... I rarely get more than 4 hours uninterrupted sleep in the week and that's no fun when holding down a full time job.

bitofthisandthat · 15/05/2011 18:02

i always have naps after lunch at the weekend (when my dc arent here.)
Most of the time i love it, but sometimes it can make me groggy and miserable.
Before i worked, and when my dc were small, i would nap for 2 hrs every day Grin

bitofthisandthat · 15/05/2011 18:03

i missed the dentist last week because i had fallen asleep! Got there half hour late and he refused to see us!

activate · 15/05/2011 18:04

I have a siesta daily - around 4pm or so for 20 minutes - I'm a girl
