to not care about immigration?

So many people seem to have a huge problem with it and I really don't understand why.

The crazy thing is, I live in a hugely multicultural area and most of the people I know who have a problem with this, live in predominantly white suburbs.

We have a problem here with alcoholic homeless people fighting and screaming in the streets - none of them are immigrants.

I don't have a problem with immigration or multiculturalism.

I do have a problem with the level of it. This kind of population growth is unsustainable.

Also it tends to be concentrated in certain areas. Where I used to live a high proportion of pupils came from non english speaking homes and I was worried about the effect it would have on my daughters education. The area would also take 32 years to clear it's council house waiting list. Most of that the fault of right to buy and failure to replace. But that simple fact didn't stop a BNP councillor getting elected.

Immigration does drive down wages especially for the low skilled.

There is a housing crisis in this country. We need to build many more homes to meet current demand as it is. All of these a reasonable objections to immigration.

Any civilised country will accept people fleeing persecution however I do think it's time to limit economic immigration and skill up our own citizens. Or get them off the dole (if they are able bodied and have no caring/childcare responsibilities)

alemci · 15/05/2011 14:59

Jacqueline i was just answering the question about how immigration may have had an impact on your life. It was a general observation. I don't think it has been such a good thing if I am honest.

MotherSnacker · 15/05/2011 15:50

"I'm working poor, living in social housing, in a multicultural area which supposedly makes me the exact sort of person who would be somehow harmed/disadvantaged by immigration. However, I cannot see this in real life. I just can't."

Working and got social housing. No wonder you're not personally bothered.

We had a 1 bed flat with two kids. When Oh lost his job in warehousing it took him a year to find something else.In London. In my opinion part of this was because employers in that sector (forklift driving) prefer immigrants because they are cheaper and they can treat them like shit. This was before the recession as well. We had fuck all chance of a council house and even when we were both working we could not afford private rent or a mortgage. I know many council houses have been sold off but when there is a long list you don't need more people on it. We moved away in the end. I don't blame immigrants, they are trying to make a better life for themselves, I blame the government and exploitative employers.

"people worked hard an fought to make it great"

on the back of opressing othr nations through colonisation, the slave trade, actually hampering their nations progress by preventing equal access to education and opportunities. we should not be proud of the way our nation became strong but ashamed. good grief

alemci · 15/05/2011 16:13

why do we always have to beat ourselves up about the past. Life was hard for most people and most nations. I think we need some pride. Yes there were negatives but how about some positives as well.

why do other nations want to come to our shores if we were so evil and awful in the past?

mamushi · 15/05/2011 16:41

because now we're sitting sweet on a strong ecenomy and large military force whilst they are still trying to pull their govt, education, infrastucture systems together due to the fact that we had a great head start through oppressing them.

Im not saying we should harp on about it, but the attitude that our country is great because of good honest hard work whilst the other countries obviously must not work so hard is a load of tosh if you know any history at all.

RobF · 15/05/2011 16:47

"because now we're sitting sweet on a strong ecenomy and large military force whilst they are still trying to pull their govt, education, infrastucture systems together due to the fact that we had a great head start through oppressing them.."
We were ahead of them before we "oppressed" them. That's generally how the world works. Otherwise we'd still be living in small tribes and foraging for nuts and berries.

mamushi · 15/05/2011 17:10

oh thats okay then - completely justified! dont know why we ever stopped!!!
best keep them down before they get ahead and decide to return the favour eh??

BoffyMefferson · 15/05/2011 17:14

Is Rob still being shy about answering the question about what he does to contribute to our fair land? (I am having a mental bet with myself about this ending up in quotation marks in one of his messages).

Ps, can I change my name to Johnny Foreigner for this?

ccpccp · 15/05/2011 17:27

I dont feel the slightest bit of remorse over how this country conducted itself in the past, because as empires go, ours was the fairest.

The rules were different back then and its weak whiney shit to allow this country throw itself on its sword today over some percieved historical debt.

Feel guilty? Give some money to charity. The current crop of 'immigrants' are no more owed a living by the UK than the current UK citizens were responsible for stuff that happened generations ago.

Wise the fuck up, for your kids sake.

microfight · 15/05/2011 17:33

Not sure if this has already been said as I have only skim read BUT are we not forgetting our British builders in the 80's mass landing in Germany taking German jobs and bringing the money straight home, Auf Wiedersehen!!
We have done the same things.
Or in more recent times the mass buying up of property abroad to make a fast buck or enjoy a retirement. The consequences of which are that most locals in many European countries have been totally priced out of buying a property in the country and town they have been born in.

jasminetom · 15/05/2011 17:38

I live in a multi cultural area ffs! Just not in the UK. I wouldn't want to live in a place inhabited by scroats of any origin thanks. I work in a company with 50 languages and we don't go in for the breast beasting fuss, just get on with life. And if you had the choice, would you truly live in an area where you have to put up with pissed twats? Don't call me a pillock, outside of the UK suburbs real life is easier to live.

You're still a pillock.

What an intelligent reply stuckinthemiddlewithyou.

So glad I didn't give you more than 2 minutes of my time

usualsuspect · 15/05/2011 17:53

I thought it was an excellent reply StuckinTheMiddlewithYou

"Is Rob still being shy about answering the question about what he does to contribute to our fair land? (I am having a mental bet with myself about this ending up in quotation marks in one of his messages)."

The same as most people, I work hard, pay my taxes, obey the law, and try to raise my kids to do the same.

deuxpoints · 15/05/2011 18:08

In that case usualsuspect - I will leave you and the op to continue the highbrow political debate you are so capable of.
I'm sure the op taught Ban Ki-moon everything he knows.

RobF · 15/05/2011 18:25

"Not sure if this has already been said as I have only skim read BUT are we not forgetting our British builders in the 80's mass landing in Germany taking German jobs and bringing the money straight home, Auf Wiedersehen!!"
They only did it for a year. When unemployment rose in Germany they sent the Brits home.

jasminetom · 15/05/2011 18:30

In the spirit of forum etiquette I will bow out. I wouldn't wanna be ya

mx5hairdresser · 15/05/2011 18:32

what annoys me is people saying that immigrants are destroying british culture. well if by "culture" they mean moaning about the weather, obsession with queuing, crazy censorship laws and thuggish binge drinkers being offensive in public, then keep the immigrants coming in.

microfight · 15/05/2011 18:32

Rob F
what about the terrible effect we have had on the locals in all the resorts abroad where we have hiked the property prices up to levels that have priced the locals out of their own market?

usualsuspect · 15/05/2011 18:34

deuxpoints I didn't realise this was an united nations meeting , I thought it was a chat forum

Sorry Smile

StuckinTheMiddlewithYou · 15/05/2011 18:37

jasminetom since the only reason you seem to have for posting on this thread is to look down on me because of where I live, that's probably a good idea.

You're truly a very bizarre person.

alizee · 15/05/2011 18:38

this thread is .. interesting to say the least.
My point of view as an immigrant/migrant.
I am personally affected by immigration because of all the preconceived ideas about it.
I can fully appreciate why most people would think that way and the way i see it, if you want to move to another country you should do so wholeheartedly, and that includes doing your share for the community and not abusing the system for benefits.
I've previously had issues about my nationality, it's quite frustrating when people assume i'm stupid/uncultured/a scrounger, just because i wasn't born here. Sometimes people's attitude changes towards me when they find out i'm not British and it does affect me.
