to ask how many of you cringe when you see/hear video recordings of yourself?

Salmotrutta · 12/05/2011 19:36

Had to watch some video recordings today which included me and I hated watching/hearing myself:

My voice sounds nothing like I think it does - [cringe]
I slouch even more than I realised [cringe]
I had VPL [even bigger cringe]

So tomorrow:
I try not to sound too "drawly" (is that a word?)
I stand up straighter
I wear a skirt

YANBU I sound like a Muppet when my voice is recorded. I won't even use my own voice to set my answerphone message Blush

lemonbeaver · 12/05/2011 19:39

God i HATE myself in video,

For some strange reason i look far bigger/fatter, sound awful and have a terrible annoying laugh. Must be the camera angle Wink

mrsravelstein · 12/05/2011 19:39

Smile i am always shocked at what a squeaky voice i have (the fact that phone callers often ask if they can speak to my mum or dad should have been a bit of a clue) and that my estuary/essex accent is waaaay stronger than i think it is...

SecretNutellaFix · 12/05/2011 19:40

My voice is several tones higher than I imagine it to be

I have refused to ever listen to myself on recordings ever since I was a small girl.

Pagwatch · 12/05/2011 19:42

Oh god, me

MoonGirl1981 · 12/05/2011 19:44

I sound sooooooo West Country on tape.

I am from/in the West ountry, but had no idea my accent was so extreme!

Salmotrutta · 12/05/2011 19:44

Phew ......... thank God I'm not alone Grin

Very disconcerting innit? Grin

also, generally when i see old videos i realise that whatever haircut i had at the time, it was always better than whichever one i have at the time of viewing

lemonbeaver · 12/05/2011 19:52

HA ha thats so true mrsravel

RevoltingPeasant · 12/05/2011 19:52

God, it's terrible Blush

I have a double chin which I SWEAR isn't there in RL, and I sound really posh, but in an annoying, clueless kind of way. And my clothes don't fit right.

Salmotrutta · 12/05/2011 19:55

YY RevoltingPeasant - why do clothes look OK in the mirror at home but when you see a video there's always something not quite right?
Is there a mirror conspiracy we don't know about?

MrsHerculePoirot · 12/05/2011 20:00

Oh god, it's AWFUL. I am a teacher and dread any child recording me I have a really wierd voice when I hear it. I also say "right, OK" about every 5 seconds.

Also, does anyone else have that thing where you go out and look in the mirror in the morning and think you look Ok, but by the time you get home and look in the mirror you look like the michelen man in lycra where nothing quite fits right and is really unflattering - or is that just me?!?

Hullygully · 12/05/2011 20:01

Beyond unspeakable. Way beyond.

squeakytoy · 12/05/2011 20:02

I hate my own voice, it really doesnt sound anything like me.

My accent is also unrecognisable now to what it was 15 years ago and I didnt even realise it was me on an answerphone message that I had left on the house phone Blush

Salmotrutta · 12/05/2011 20:03

No - me too MrsHercule!!

I'm a teacher too and I know I say "Everybody following so far?" waaaaay too much!
I don't need to hear a recording to know that Grin

mrscantona · 12/05/2011 20:03

Oh yes, I NEVER talk if our video recorder is on. I am always totally gutted that I don't sound anything like mariella frostrup.

cassierosse · 12/05/2011 20:04

Same for me Hullygully

Hate video cameras, photos, mirrors, windows etc.....

Bleurgh.

shakey1500 · 12/05/2011 20:05

I'm always amazed at how much lower my voice is on recordings. Also, you can't see it normally but one of my eyes is slightly bigger than the other and it is SO noticeable on photographs.

Salmotrutta · 12/05/2011 20:06

Thing is though, probably our voices sound fine to everyone else.
It's just that we aren't used to hearing them that way.

i sound like a chipmunk on recordings :( i hate it. i avoid talking on videos - i hate myself on pictures either but il get over it. il only regret not having pics of me and kids when they are older.

kickingking · 12/05/2011 20:09

I hate myself on film. My voice is deeper and more common that I want to think it is. I also hate the way the camera picks up on my pointy little chin.

Alright, the camera doesn't 'pick up on it' - I just have a pointy little chin :(

LostInTransmogrification · 12/05/2011 20:11

I sound like a nine year old boy on tape, which can't possibly be what I actually sound like (even if DH says so). I usually manage to stay out of shot though so I can happily slouch in a corner. Occasionallymy ankle is caught in shot, and it's always chunkier than I expect Sad

Salmotrutta · 12/05/2011 20:12

Awww ImChaniging - don't avoid photos with your kids, that would be so sad! I always come out with red-eye or weird expressions but I'm learning how to "pose" a bit better now for photos.

I don't actually look too bad in RL but I'm just not photogenic Sad

And I know slouching is A Bad Thing but it came from being self-conscious about my height as an adolescent.

travellingwilbury · 12/05/2011 20:14

Oh God me too , I am far more attractive and witty with a lovely speaking voice in reality .

Either that or I am travelling through life deluded .

I want to stay deluded so always hide from video cameras .

Punkatheart · 12/05/2011 20:14

I once had a party at my house - went upstairs to go to the loo. Lots of people were going through my tapes....suddenly there was me reading excerpts from King Lear - doing all the voices. They had found my school revision tapes. I still blush. Yeah, hate my voice. I sound bossy.
